Puerto Limon Sloth Sanctuary Excursion Reviews

Take a tour through Puerto Limon's Sloth Sanctuary, which encompasses more than 200 acres of rainforest and is home to Costa Rican wildlife, most notably the star of the reserve: the sloth.

River trip before hand which was great for spotting wildlife. Quite a lengthy ride it felt to the jaguar rescue centre (which doesn’t have any jaguars). It was great to see but we would have liked more explaination as to why the animals were there - what was wrong with them, how had they been helped, what was needed to get them back into the wild? Without this it just felt like a glorified zoo. We stopped off at a souvenir shop on the way back which was ridiculous because the port had a super big market there. Read Less

The sloth sanctuary is two rooms each with about 4 cages of sloths. We unfortunately had the arrogant grandson of the owner ramble about his own greatness for the hour or so we were there. The most time you need in to fully experience the sanctuary is 10 minutes so the other 40 plus minutes was an unnecessary waste . After the let down of the sloth rooms we were taken a few steps away to the "river" for a "canoe" ride. In reality the river is a drainage system ditch. There you get to cram into a 6 person row boat to enjoy a 30 minute "ride" through the narrow drainage ditch with overgrown vegetation on both sides meant to simulate the rain forest. Zero wildlife encountered. The tour guide was exceptional as was the bus ride to and from the sanctuary. Read Less

We liked the Sloth Sanctuary a lot but... was hoping to get a little more up close with a Sloth. Only seen a handful behind cages, except for one. The canoe ride is a huge waste of time, thinking they should remove that part.

In Costa Rica, we took the Animal Planet recommended tour of the sloth sanctuary. It did not disappoint. The bus ride was not long and we got to see the animals right away. The tour was given in rooms where the sloths were. The guides were informative and passionate about their work. The boat ride in the canal behind the sanctuary was not explained so we just got in the small aluminum boat and paddled away. Our boatman did not speak English so we just drifted along in silence until we encountered wildlife. Fortunately I speak enough Spanish to translate for the others. He pointed out iguanas and then we arrived where the howler monkeys lived. He positioned our boat where we could watch them for a substantial time. We also saw sloths in the wild. It was a great look at the rainforest. Our regular tour guide taught us a great deal about his country and also showed us how banana plantations worked which was a bonus. I found the craft market at the dock the best opportunity for shopping on the trip with genuine crafts, nice vendors and reasonable prices. Read Less
