I chose this cruise to explore western South America and specifically to go to Macchu Pichu. Also to travel the Panama Canal one more time. It did not disappoint. As usual, NCL tours are well planned and the guides are very professional. Embarkation at San Antonio was probably the easiest of any port I've done so far. Some sparse facilities in a warehouse, but they moved us through quick and it was easy to follow where to go. Some folks thought the Macchu Pichu trip was overpriced at about $2000 each and you missed two days off the boat. These were people that did not take the excursion. But for this excursion they chartered a 737 to fly the 97 of us from Aricca, Chile to Cusco, Peru, and had us split into groups of 9 or 10 or so, each with a guide. The guides were equipped with oxygen and first aid due to the high altitude in Cusco. I saw them use their first aid skills in person when one woman fainted during lunch. They rushed into action and appeared to know exactly what to do and were very professional at helping her until an ambulance arrived. I saw her later on so I know she recovered fine. The hotel for 2 nights in Cusco was absolutely first class and at least 4 star quality. Really nice. Fantastic breakfast buffet and dinner included. Better than the ship even. The train ride down to MP was great with a wonderful meal and great views and some commentary. MP tour was very detailed and the guide knew his history and helped the less agile folks with the stairs and walking around. We spent around 4 hours there, and it was enough for me. If you want a detailed study of the place and want to spend a few days there, then this is not for you. But after 4 hours I was ready to go back and thought I had seen enough to satisfy my curiosity. The ride back was just as good. The same train and hotel and the next day, another 737 to go to Lima. I understand where the $2K went, and in my opinion, it was worth it. A surprise tour was to see the adobe city of Chan Chan in northern Peru. Really interesting place and it is pre-Inca and still in pretty good shape. Turned out to be more interesting than I expected. Overall the ship's renovation recently really updated it to today's styles and standards. The New Mexican restaurant, los Lobos had a fairly limited menu, but everything was tasty and fairly authentic (Full disclosure I'm married to a Mexican, so we had to hold not tp a high standard and it didn't disappoint.). The buffet was typical NCL and acceptable, but crowded and not a s good as the specialty restaurants. Overall, another typical high quality NCL cruise and the renovated SUN was a pleasure to sail on and the crew all seemed happy to be there too.. Read Less

We chose this cruise because Oceania has smaller ships and their food is excellent. This was a South America cruise going from Lima Peru to Buenos Aires Argentina. Being the month of March in the Southern Hemisphere, we expected and received September type temperatures like the Northern Hemisphere. Sirena is very well kept still clean and attractive though it will be renovated soon. I like all the colors and schemes she has now but that will disappear with the addition of gray interior decor. My only issue with the ship was the aggressiveness and interruptions of the wine stewards and waiters in the main dining room. Those personnel need to be trained to present themselves and be recognized. So many times they would interrupt the table guests which to me is rude. On the last bus tour in BA, there was a passenger that was coughing incessantly. I caught his cold and am still suffering from it. I wrote a separate letter to Oceania suggesting that their ship chaperon(s) on the tours provide disposable masks on those busses for the "coughers" and on the vessel too. There are sick people who come on the ship even though they are given a questionnaire prior to boarding. Passengers do not have to divulge that they have a cold. Anyhow, I would recommend the Sirena and Oceania. Read Less

I wanted to cruise the Panama Canal and this trip was available at a suitable time. Life aboard ship was excellent as we were made to feel like part of the Norwegian family. The dining experience was superb but all the staff made us feel comfortable in their home. I enjoyed having a choice of cheeseburgers or pizza for lunch. I am a bridge player and was very pleased to find that Norwegian had contracted with a couple that would provide us time to play duplicate bridge. This was an unexpected yet appreciated aspect of our cruise that added to our enjoyment. The entertainment was varied and appreciated. From trivia to a string trio playing classical music. Our balcony cabin allowed us much time viewing ocean life and activity at sea. I took advantage of Norwegians advance bookings which doubled my deposits and I am looking forward to cruising with Norwegian over the next few years. Our cab Read Less

We actually chose this cruise for the sea days. The ports were pleasant extras for us. We had a fabulous time. Cabin steward was fantastic along with every staff member we interacted with each day. We did (3) excursions and loved them all. Wild life adventure in San Martin was amazing! We really got our money's worth out of this one. Dolphins, sea lions, penguins, birds oh my! We zip lined in Costa Rica and had a great time flying through the trees. The staff was great with the advanced age of our group... I think everyone enjoyed the experience. We also did the beach excursion in Puerto Vallarta, warm water, great food and yummy drinks. Everything was wonderful. We did book all our excursions though Princess just to be safe so far from home and we weren't disappointed. Felt we got our money's worth out of each event. We loved the trivia and game shows on the ship and the bar staff was exceptional. Everyone was so much fun! The Cruise Director and entertainment staff were out of this world amazing! I wish I could name every staff member we encountered. We met wonderful fellow travelers and had a blast getting to know folks from other countries as well as from other States in the US. We came away with friends for life. We love Princess Cruise lines and will continue to sail with them as often as we can. We picked this because we had never been to S A and we were looking for something that ended up in LA, as we had a wedding to attend on 3/30/19 We loved the countries we visited and were never concerned about safety in the ports. We did all excursions through Princess, and they were well done, with excellent hosts. There was enough variety so that there was something for everyone. We did not go to Machu Pichu because it would have taken 2 days out of our cruise. We would do this cruise again. The Star Princess ship was a little older, but well maintained. We like the smaller ships without all the “kiddie” attractions, like race cars, climbing walls, wave pools, as we are older and do not use these. The average age group on this cruise was 50+. South America Santiago, Chile March 14, 2019 to Los Angeles, March 30, 2019) appealed to my wife and I. We enjoyed Chile (Santiago and Coquimbo), Peru (San Martin and Lima) and Costa Rica (Puntarenas), less so Nicaragua (San Juan del Sur), that was rushed and felt a little unsafe, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, that was a free day to unwind. We chose eZAir for our flight (13 hours) from LA four days earlier and the only regret was not arranging our departure from Phoenix via LA/Santiago. The Star Princess was a welcome relief after a disastrous inaugural repositioning cruise with MSC Seaside. We have been on the Emerald Princess a number of times, so the Star Princess, a sister ship, was very familiar and a welcome relief. A few glitches arose such as the 5:15 PM supper start; 6:00 PM is much better and definitely preferred. Entertainment and food selection at Supper seemed to be slightly less diverse then previously but was vastly better than my previous encounter on the Seaside. Food would rate a 4/5. Dining, cabin, bar and general services were exemplary and would rate 4/5. The one exception was the staff member at the Captain's Circle Counter who was not courteous when I spoke to her rather somewhat short/rude. Entertainment was good (3.5/5), especially the stage productions, but overall slightly more muted (comedy, rock bands, classical music, etc.) than my last Princess cruise from Rome to Ft Lauderdale. Most of our shore excursions were private as there are no guarantees with Princess and we get, more for less. Most of these I will review through Trip Adviser. Overall this cruise provided some healing from past cruises and new friends. We will once again return in 2021 for a 31 day fall cruise via Vancouver to Sydney, Australia. Read Less

I can't understand why a big cruise line like Princess simply doesn't understand what is vegetarian and what is not, despite being advised repeatedly. Overall, not blown away by the cuisine. I'm afraid too that reception staff were not particularly knowledgeable about the port arrangements on one particular day, in fact giving me completely inaccurate information and causing a degree of stress re availability of our tour operator. Otherwise staff were very friendly (mostly) and helpful, ironically especially so in the dining rooms. As far as entertainment was concerned the Princess dancers were really good but other acts were a bit dated. Our balcony cabin was fine but maybe the level of service and overall standard of cleanliness were a bit short of what we've had in the past. Overall I think this cruise experience may have called time on our many years of cruising. It wasn't awful but it just wasn't special enough. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it originated in Chile and arrived in Los Angeles. The 16 day itinerary allowed us to arrive early in Santiago and enjoy Chile and the hospitality of the city and it's people. Princess transportation to the cruise port at San Antonio was very good although the cruise port facility was modest at best with lack of direction for arriving guests but we embarked comfortably. Although the ports included several that required transportation to local destinations we did get to enjoy Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, (where we took a great Princess tour and zip-lined), Nicaragua and Mexico. We did feel that the information about the port cities and what travelers could do on their own was lacking.The time on the ship was casual, comfortable and relaxing and the crew from the Captain down were friendly and accommodating. This cruise appealed to an older crowd and had only a dozen or so children on board. The entertainment was good but not spectacular although the one major production number by the song and dance entertainers was outstanding. There probably should have been more than one major stage production presented on this long of a cruise. The dance band "Static" was outstanding and was the best band we have heard and danced to on any of our cruises. The food was good but only outstanding in the specialty restaurant. Disembarkation and Princess transportation to LAX was very easy and well organized. Read Less

Overview - unusual itinerary on board an older but well maintained ship. Transfer to Ship We boarded the Star Princess in San Antonio, Chile after making our own arrangements for the flight from the US to Santiago. Transfers (Princess arrangements) were efficient and after dropping our cases at the airport we did not see them again until they arrived in our cabin around 16:00. There was a long line at Santiago Intl Airport for the air conditioned coaches but we were seated within 30-45 minutes, so not too bad. What is Star Princess like? If you want to travel on this ship with Princess you only have about 5 months before it's transfer to P&O Australia. We would heartily recommend Star Princess as although older, it is well maintained and with its subdued decor provides a relaxing environment. Although when built it was viewed as a large ship, in today's world it is midsized and orientation is easy. Straight corridors on accommodation decks may lack interest, but we found them easier to navigate than the constantly shifting corridors of ships such as the Regal Princess. One of our favourite features on this and similar Princess ships is the full wrap around promenade deck that allows passengers to go right to the bow and look out. Listen Princess (and all the other lines) - this is a feature that should exist on ALL cruise ships! Skywalkers lounge located in the 'spoiler' is a fantastic and underutilized venue. More than 100ft above the water and with 360 degree views it is an excellent daytime spot when for most of the day it is unused. From 16:30 to 18:30 the Elite/Platinum reception is held here and on our cruise the number of platinum + guests was so great that the venue was often overcrowded. I believe this was due to the demographic on this itinerary as last year on the Regal Princess a venue less than half the size was normally empty at this reception. What is the Food Like - main Restaurant and Buffet? Pretty good! I don't understand the complaints other on this forum have made. Catering to a ship of 2,600 passengers is necessarily banquet style and the quality of food and presentation was much better than typical land based banquet catering. We dined in 'Club Class' dining and never waited more than 5 minutes for a table, eating as a couple two or three nights and on a table for four most nights. While menus do not vary much from one year to the next, every night something tickled our taste buds so that we never resorted to the always available favourites. The buffet has a greater choice but can appear rather picked over if you arrive at the wrong time. Also the food (and this applies to the main restaurant also) is not always very hot. The actual food in the buffet is mostly of a good standard though certain dishes such as Indian curries can be a bit oily. What is the Food Like - Crown Grill and Sabatinis? The Best - as suite passengers we always enjoy complementary dining at the Crown Grill on embarkation day (an excellent benefit) and the steak was so good we dined at The Crown Grill again later in the cruise. The 'salt menu' is superb, with the Applewood Smoked salt from Washington State a taste sensation Sabatini's menu has changed since last year and to our pallet is much improved. We had given up eating in Sabatinis after their menu became too eclectic in 2015, however the new menu returns to the fundamentals of excellent Italian cuisine and we heartily recommend it once again. On Board We make very little use of the entertainment and activities on board, however there was one act that deserves mention - Duo Consonance. This Russian Violinist and Chilean Pianist were easily the highlight with their mix of classical, folk and musical repertoire. Their virtuosity mixed with humour was refreshing and it was sad they were only on board for the last three days of our cruise. Ports and Excursions The ports of call on this cruise were the main draw and they did not disappoint. We took Princess excursions in three ports and explored on our own in Lima, Nicaragua and Mexico. Coquimbo, Chile - Tololo Observatory. This full day tour was worthwhile particularly for the views from the Tololo observatory across the Atacama desert towards the high Andes. Pisco, Peru - Islas Bellastas Wildlife Reserve Located approx 11 miles offshore the islands are home to millions of seabirds as well as endangered Humboldt Penguins and sea lions. The small boats that take you out to the islands are expertly piloted to within a few feet of the rocks so you are guaranteed excellent views of the wildlife Puntarenas, Costa Rica - Old Train Ride and River Cruise This trip started with a display of traditional dance by local kids with an invite to join them for the finale. The train ride itself was a short distance covered at a very slow speed, but it facilitated a view of life away from the beaten track and was quite enjoyable. Driving up into the hills on the way to the river cruise, the coach made a stop at a local craft market where we were given complimentary Costa Rican coffee (excellent) and local mangoes. Some people complained that the river cruise part of the tour was too short and we did not see crocodiles, however we would suggest this shows the benefit of proper research. The Princess shore excursion guide clearly shows that the boat trip portion of this trip is scheduled for 45 minutes with longer boat trips available on dedicated Mangrove swamp tours. We did see a good variety of wildlife including Scarlet Macaws and Iguanas sunning themselves in the Mangrove trees. Would we Recommend This Cruise? Undoubtedly yes! The eight sea days were really laid back. On boarding we locked our phones in the safe and did not take them out until disembarkation. The crew were good and 'Captain Bye Bye' was the most visible captain we have ever seen (he moves to the new Sky Princess for it's maiden voyage this November). The itinerary was interesting and the excursions offered were varied. Who Should NOT take this Cruise? If you have kids that need constant entertainment, kids clubs, etc this may not be the cruise for them. The Star Princess has the usual kids club and hangout areas, but cruises of this length tend to attract a more mature clientele. We counted less than 10 kids under the age of 15 on board this ship. The good: The captain and all staff except Guest Relations staff had a great attitude. We had wonderful weather and our fellow cruisers were a good group. The beds are comfortable and the ship was very clean The bad: Worst food, bar none, I have ever had on my approx 20 cruises. Extremely limited menu, gristly meat and over-rich sauces. The Guest Relations staff gave incorrect information with amazing regularity - they need additional training and to learn to say "I don't know" instead of giving misinformation. The theater entertainment was mediocre, as was most of the bar and piazza entertainment. The volume of all music throughout the ship was many, many times too loud for enjoyment, as were the mid-ship movies, which I could hear from my aft balcony. I felt sorry for the performers at Crooners because they were completely drowned out by the performances in the Piazza. I am used to pricey shore excursions, but these were way out of line for the value received. We were appalled at the many totally incorrect Trivia answers (yes, we looked them up after) given with absolutely no room for discussion. The moderators were also super quick and allowed no question repeats before the checking process. Read Less

This cruise was very enjoyable, especially since my husband and I were doing it with my sister and her husband. The food in the dining room was great, also the lunch buffet was excellent. The breakfast spread tended to be repetitive, but I am not a big breakfast eater so the lack of choices did not affect me. Loved the zumba and line dancing, especially Ramon who is an amazing instructor. The night time deck parties were amazing, very energizing, lots of fun. Met lots of interesting and friendly people from all over the world. Special thanks to our wonderful Captain Tuvo, and our dining room team Cristian and Quirino. Plus Cirilio who always kept our stateroom spotless. We were not too happy with our statement temperature which was always too high and it could get sweltering during the night. Also I had a bit of a hiccup with our cruiseport to airport transfer which never got resolved, however we were lucky to be able to join the supershuttle that morning and we got to the airport in plenty of time for our flight. We are almost Elite with Princess, so just shows our loyalty to the brand although we do cruise with other lines when we liked their itinerary. Read Less

We did the 30 day cruise in December and spent the winter in Argentina and Chile. The logical choice was to return to California on the same ship from Santiago. We are fairly new to cruising but we love the Star Princess. The staff seems to be genuinely friendly and wants you to feel like part of the family. A couple of the ports were a little disappointing but I don’t think it was the fault of Princess. Our interior cabin was comfortable but I wish there had been a comfortable chair to sit on in the cabin. There are plenty of places to do that around the ship however. We usually ate at the buffet, the food was comparable to the main dining room but there were a lot more things to choose from. We did eat “out” at Sabatini’s one night and it was excellent. The port excursions we booked through Princess were pricey but well done. The embarkation in San Antonio was good, but I thinking Valparaiso is a much more interesting town. Disembarking in Long Beach was a breeze especially considering the last minute change in berth Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary, which was Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, including sailing around Cape Horn and Straits of Magellan. It was a 14-night cruise. The Eclipse is a beautiful ship that is elegantly furnished. The staff provided outstanding service, especially our room attendant and wait staff in the main dining room. We were really disappointed in the quality of the food in the main dining room and in the Oceanview Cafe. The presentation of the food was always very appealing, but flavor and options were severely lacking. In addition the Oceanview Cafe was extremely crowded. Twice, we were unable to find a seat and had to go elsewhere to eat! After about the 4th day, they started putting extra tables and chairs in the walkway through the cafe. The quality of entertainment in the Eclipse Theater was not what we've been accustomed to having on a cruise ship. We went to the theater nearly every night, but left early everytime with one exception. The talent just was not there. The one night we stayed all the way through the program was when they had a trio called, "Shades of Buble." They sang songs recorded by Michael Buble. They were talented, and we enjoyed them. We had 4 excursions scheduled. The one in Puerto Madryn was cancelled due to the rain the night before that has washed out the roads. I was really disappointed because we were going to see penguins, which I was looking forward to. The other excursions were all very good. We had one in Buenos Aries which was a tour of the City, a visit to San Telmo Market and a fabulous steak dinner in a restaurant. We also did an excursion in Montevideo, Uruguay which was a tour of the City and a visit to a ranch where we were treated to a hay ride, bar-b-que (not too good) and all the wine, beer or water we wanted to drink. We had an excursion in Santiago that was very nice. It took us to a nice historical plaza and a tour through the City, a lapis luzili shop and finally to a lovely park on San Cristobal Hill. After this tour, we were taken to the airport to pick up our luggage that had been transferred there and catch our flight. That process was well coordinated by the ship and the tour company and worked very smoothly! Read Less

My wife and I have become fans of Celebrity and Royal Caribbean for quite some time. >The service is excellent!! The staff on the ship are friendly and very helpful. My wife has a hard time getting around, the excursion team did an excellent job of helping us get to the excursions buses. Our dining room staff couldn't be anymore helpful. >Food is excellent, in all restaurants, buffet, etc. >Cabin was clean and comfortable. The steward was very helpful and took of room very well. We were at the very aft end of the ship.. WHAT A VIEW. We could see 180 degrees and going through the Chilean Fjords was amazing.. >We had a fun time at the Captain's Club events. >The ports were very interesting and unique. >We used Choice Air.. What a great idea that was. We did not have to worry about our luggage getting to the ship, Celebrity took care of that. I am now looking at using Choice air when we travel on Celebrity and Air to Sea on Royal Caribbean whenever we cruise. Read Less

This was our 3rd cruise; the previous cruises were with Oceania and Seabourn on much smaller ships and apparently in a higher class of luxury. We had never been to South America before and were hoping for some spectacular scenery. We were disappointed. The itinerary featured a cruise through the Beagle Channel to Ushaia and later through the Straits of Magellan on the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s voyage. However those parts of the cruise occurred substantially at night and we saw very little. Glaciers? Nope. There were too many sea days for us and the ports visited apart from Buenos Aires (where we had spent 5 days before embarking) and Montevideo were of little interest. Ushaia is a pretty town and set below some beautiful snow covered peaks but that was it. Embarkation was impressively efficient. The dining was a let down. The food in the MDR was not much better than pub standard and sometimes unacceptably worse. The room was beautiful and the sommeliers and waiters provided quite excellent service but the food rarely bore much resemblance to the lavish descriptions on the menus. I had an allegedly Moroccan tagine in which none of the claimed ingredients could be identified. It was tasteless stew. Poor desserts. Cold vegetables. Tough meats. Steak Dianne which a waiter agreed was nothing like it purported to be. Dry tasteless cakes. The kitchen lets the front of house badly down. Those who write the menu descriptions have clearly not dined in the MDR. On the basis of the MDR standards we did not try the specialty restaurants assuming that the standards would not justify the cost. Perhaps we missed out. The wines available in the classic package were good especially the South African wines. We are Australians. The main cafe for breakfast and lunch had extensive options although the standard was cafe level. The room was nearly always crowded but that is a given with 2880 guests. The concierge balcony cabin was very good. Spacious and with a very good bathroom. I don’t see that paying for concierge is of any value. The entertainment was mainly good but not spectacular. Guest performers were good. The Liar Liar night featuring the Captain and the Entertainment MC was a disgrace. Pure filth. I walked out after 15 minutes but my wife made the mistake of staying as we were with friends. Celebrity should either get rid of this feature or clean it up. It was astounding to see the Captain taking part. The enclosed pool area was terrific and I enjoyed the pool size. The library was good. The cinema was appreciated although the films were recycled after a week. The ships facilities are extensive and to repeat it is a beautiful ship. Disembarkation at the not ideal port of San Antonio was again impressively efficient. Read Less

Met some super friends. The entertainment on the ship was a let down. Haw many times can one sit and watch the ship dancers. They need more professional entertainers. The meals were excellent. We visited the Michael's club every evening and wow - what a great staff in that room. The internet was down several times, but that was most likely because of the ship's location. My wife requested a special wine before we saiked and Celebrity did their best to make her happy - thank you Celebrity. I would remind anyone who reserves a room under the Lido deck to beware - you will hear foot traffic starting around 6 am. Thanks again Celebrity for a wonderful cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise, our 11th with Celebrity, because we had never visited South America and it seemed a good opportunity to visit three countries. We had previously booked the Rio Carnival cruise for the previous year, but postponed it for personal reasons. We changed to this cruise because it was slightly longer being 14 days rather than 10, it was a terribly long way to fly and so we wanted as long there as possible. We also chose this cruise because it was on the Solstice class Eclipse rather than the Millenium class Infinity. We had previously been on a cruise on Celebrity Millenium and prefer the Solstice class ships. The Celebrity Eclipse is lovely, its the second time we have sailed on her and the staff were all excellent. However, every time we travel with Celebrity we notice cost cutting, there is always something missing or costing extra since the previous cruise we did although the prices of their cruises are rising rapidly. The food in the main dining room is not as good as it used to be, the variety is more limited and food is often not very hot. The sommelier's have more tables to look after too. The problem with this cruise was the ports visited. Embarkation day was chaotic, it was done through a convention centre rather than the cruise terminal. The actual check-in was perfectly ok, but then we had to wait for around an hour to be taken to the ship by bus - there was way too much hanging around. Having left home at 2.30pm on the Friday afternoon for Heathrow and flown at 10pm that evening, we landed at 9am Saturday morning and we were not onboard the ship until around 2pm on the Sunday (we had been put up in a hotel in Buenos Aries on the Saturday night). We went on an excellent trip to Mimosa Estancia near Buenos Aries on Monday and had a great time. After that it was all downhill, some of this was because the weather was bad for the entire cruise, which was nobody's fault of course. Our next stop was Monevideo where we did a highlights tour, basically there were no highlights, we had never visited such a dump of a place before. We could not visit the next port, Punto del Este as the captain announced at 7am that morning that the sea was too rough for the tendering operation so we would not be stopping there. At the next port, Puerto Madryn, it was announced the night before that all the shore excursions would be cancelled as recent rain had left the roads in such a poor condition. We were desperate to get off the ship having spent two cold, wet days at sea so we walked around the port town, but there was nothing to see! The other ports were ok, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and Puerto Montt. We just about glimpsed Cape Horn through the fog but at least the sea was calm. All in all there were way too many sea days on this cruise, in fact half the 14 day cruise was spent at sea, it was an awfully long way to go to just see the sea. It has put us off long haul cruising, we had previously done Asian and Central American cruises. There is too much hanging around, too many sea days with not much to do on the ship when its not warm enough to sit on the deck. Celebrity cruises are not the best for entertainment. Some of the shows were good, we saw a funny comedian and a fantastic acrobatic show (Euphoria) but some awful guest entertainers including an overly flamboyant pianist and an awful singer who had a very high opinion of himself and very little talent. Also their show 'Topper' has been running for years and gets tedius when you have seen it several times! We enjoyed the ship experience as always but would not recommend this cruise. Read Less

After reading some of the reviews on this website, we were worried what we were in for! Check in and boarding in Buenos Aires was so smooth and as soon as we were on board an announcement was made that all cabins were ready to occupy. When we walked into our Aft Owners Suite we could not help but smile. Yes it is an arm and a leg but soooo worth it. We had a lounge, cloakroom, bedroom, a large bathroom with a walk in shower and plenty of storage. A fabulous balcony wraps itself around outside with two sun loungers and a table with four chairs. We were looked after superbly by our Butler, Padam and our attentive room attendants, Rajesh and Russel who kept our suite spotless and well stocked. This was our first Azamara cruise and it will not be our last. Being in a suite offers up perks such as quality dining in either Prime C or Aqualina each night where the food is excellent. You also get afternoon tea delivered to your suite if you wish. We had a tour of the bridge with the legendary runner that is Captain Carl Smith which was great fun and also a private dinner with about 20 other guests and four senior crew members in a fabulous room with Michelin quality food, what a great night. I sat next to the Cruise Director, Tony, who was excellent company, not to mention an excellent singer, as is his wife. There are plenty of quiet spaces on the ship and you are never too far away from a coffee, a beer or an ice cream, whatever takes your fancy! We found the breakfast in the Windows restaurant to be of excellent quality and there was plenty of it, Having tables outside is a nice option if the weather allows and the service was always with a smile. I have seen people comment that breakfast is the same every day, well of course it is, it is the one meal of the day where there is very little that can be changed, only your personal choice changes daily. You can virtually have anything you want! We did our own thing with regard to shore excursions, preferring to go ashore when we wanted and have a “mooch” about on our own which was great. The trips did seem very expensive and all seem to leave at about 8.30 in the morning - we are not early risers on holiday! All staff on board are very friendly and work hard to ensure your cruise is memorable for the right reasons. We only saw a couple of the shows on board, the tango and the Rio carnival dancers were amazing. It was bad weather for the White Night but it was effortlessly moved into the Living Room and the party was great. We did not use the pool facilities, preferring to use our balcony when the weather was good enough to sit out. I had a delightful manicure and pedicure in the Spa and also invested in a few Elemis products to use up our onboard credit. There are also a couple of high end shops with special offers on each day. The gym is light and airy with everything you need. They also offered health and fitness talks and a few classes. I just used the machines and the free weights which was enough. All together, we were delighted with Azamara. We heard a few grumbles about waiting for a tender to go ashore but it was only a question of waiting 10 minutes or so. What’s the rush, you are on holiday! Nearly everyone we spoke to had been on several Azamara Cruises and the clientele on board were mainly high end, well travelled couples and all spoke highly of the Pursuit. There was one downside to our fantastic suite on deck 8 which was the dragging noise from the chairs on the above deck which was the outside area of the Windows restaurant. Unfortunately, I do not know what the solution is for this, maybe Azamara should investigate some form of disc on the bottom of the chairs, just a thought! A bucket list type trip for sure! The Galapagos islands were truly mesmerizing. They were remote, unspoiled, filled with animals (many endemic to Galapagos) and the scenery was over the top. We chose Silver Seas as it had great ratings and we wanted a slightly larger ship with very experienced naturalists. While the ship holds about 100 people, I think we only had about 85 on board and it never felt crowded. Silver Seas has this down pat! From the moment you arrive at the airport, it is well organized and orchestrated. You never felt rushed or like you were part of a herd. Each experience was personalized and the staff and crew were very polite, respectful and helpful. Each day, you wake up early and head out for excursions. Most days, there were options to choose from. Each excursion started in a zodiac and you headed out to explore an island, snorkel, kayak or visit a small town. Each zodiac had a guide who lead you through the excursion and ensured each guest got the most out of it. The animals are a highlight of the whole trip. They are not afraid of people and you get a very up close (but not too close) experience with sea lions, birds, iguanas, fish and so much more. The ship itself was very nice. Rooms were spacious (for a cruise ship) and well appointed. Your personal butler ensured you had everything you needed and was quick to respond to any special request. Every time we left the room, they came in and cleaned and straightened it up. The ship wasn't new but well kept up. There was only one restaurant and the Grill on board. We had breakfast at the restaurant buffet each morning and chose to have lunch in the Grill on the deck of floor 5. We alternated between the Grill and main restaurant for dinner. The food was very good in both. I do think they could expand the Grill dinner menu beyond on the hot rocks as it was fun the first night and then got a little old. The restaurant food was all excellent and what I would expect at a fine dining establishment. Our fellow travelers were generally 40-60'ish years old and liked a very active vacation. There is little time to rest during the week. You could choose to skip excursions but then why go on this trip? It was action packed and crazy busy but exactly what we expected. There was only 1 child on our trip and about 10 teenagers who seemed to really enjoy it. Most people were part of bigger (6-12 people) groups which included families, siblings, multi generational, friends, etc. One word of warning which Silver Seas is clear about - this is not a trip for anyone that is mobility challenged. The ship isn't set up for it and the excursions all require you to go up and down steep steps on a rocking ship to the zodiac and often disembark in to the ocean and walk ashore to hike on a rugged trail. There is no entertainment on the ship other than a small piano bar for pre-dinner cocktails while watching the sunset. Most people were in their cabins by 10pm resting up for another big day of excursions. Overall, this was a once-in-a-lifetime trip although we may go back again one day and see the Western part of the archipelago. Also, we chose March as the seas were warmer for snorkeling although the air temperature was very warm too. It is the rainy season, but we didn't see even a drop of rainy and it was sunny each day. We just came back from Azamara Pursuit from BA to Rio. We previously sailed on Celebrity, Princess, Holland, Cunard, Oceania, Costa, RCI and Carnival. This was our 12th cruise. Our benchmark is Oceania (we sailed on the Riviera last September). Overall Pursuit is a great ship and we had an amazing time. However we liked the Riviera better. Here is why. The service is excellent, comparable to Oceania. But sometimes things seem a bit less organized. For example, some of the excustions were delayed 15-20 minutes. Never happened on Oceania. Also there are some lines when leaving the ship and coming back. Nothing major, not even close to what you see on big ships, but still slightly longer waiting times than Oceania. The dinner in the MDR is great, but not as good as Oceania. The open seating works very well for us, never had to wait for a table. The buffet is disappointing. Good quality, but selection is pretty limited. It is not bad overall, but few levels below Oceania. The buffet area itself is also very small and feels a bit crowded at times. Internet is probably the worst we experienced so far on cruise ships. 300kbps is not what you would expect from a luxury line in 2019. It is also pretty expensive at $20/day. We paid last year $10/day on Princess (and the speed was 20 times faster). And we sailed on older ships with much higher internet speeds. Major disappointment. Spa does not have couple massage. This is the first time on any ship that we were not able to do a couple massage. The massage itself was very good. Cabin on Oceania was small, here it's even smaller. Not a big deal, we don't spend much time in the cabin. Entertainment is mediocre at best. They don't have a real theater like on larger ships, just a big lounge with chairs. No angle, so if you don't sit on few first rows, the view is pretty limited. They cannot really provide a good evening entertainment when there is no real theater. Also not too many daily activities, and the ship feels a bit sleepy at times. The pool area is small and feels a bit crowded. Usually no problem to get a chair, except for sea days. Hot tubs are smaller than usual and not hot enough. Service is fantastic as you can expect from a luxury line. Staff is very friendly. Very limited food options. If you want to have a snack after 9pm, the only option is room service. Dress code is relaxing, no formal nights, which is perfect for us. The azamazing event was very nice and well organized. Great atmosphere. The show itself felt a bit amateur. The pre even buffet was very crowded and poorly organized. White night was nice, but we came late from our tour in Sao Paulo, and no seats available on deck 9. They simply cannot accommodate everyone on the white night because the pool area is not big enough. Why to do white night on port day like Sao Paulo when the ship is at port till 9pm, and not sea day or port with shorter port time? Excursions were another disappointment. While we appreciate smaller groups, some of them were poorly organized, and some guides were not professional. I believe Azamara made a business decision to focus on certain things and ignore other things. Their customers obviously don't care about internet, or certain daily activities like dance classes, zumba, music at the pool etc. Overall great ship, great service, good food, but we prefer Oceania Riviera. Both lines are still better than mainstream ships from Celebrity or Princess which feel much more crowded, with longer lines. But in my opinion, Riviera offers the best of both worlds: still a small ship, which still feels much less crowded, but at the same time, much better food, more activities, and better entertainment. And it actually has a better crew/passengers ratio than Azamara, so service is at least as good if not better. We did appreciate the excellent service, less crowded buffet, smaller groups on shore excursions, no lines etc. compared to the big ships. I guess we just expected better from Azamara. We might sail with Azamara again if the itinerary and the price are right, but all other things equal, we would definitely prefer Oceania. Read Less

This was our first time on Azamara, we have done 20 cruises in the past usually 2-3 week itineraries. In the last 6 months we have tried several new cruise lines including Crystal, Seabourn and Viking after primarily cruising on the main lines of NCL, Celebrity and Hal. Originally we only booked the 17 night Transatlantic but managed to find a good last minute deal while in South America and added the 11 night Buenos Aires to Rio preceding leg. Overall we had a wonderful time with the weather being mostly great (except on white nights), the crossing being smooth and the crew and service being excellent. Embarkation in BA was very easy and super quick (in contrast to our X cruise from the same port which was chaotic) due to the small number of passengers who seemed to arrive spread out and the large number off staff in the terminal. On boarding we were greeted with champagne (the same terrible stuff all the cruise lines seem to be using now). It was immediately apparent how friendly the crew is. The ship is new to Azamara and one of the seemingly famous R class ships. They have done a great job with their refurbishment in most areas as the interiors looked lovely and new. The ship is probably the smallest we have been on and has a small boutique hotel feel. The movement was noticeable, especially on the first leg and seemed strange as the sea seemed relatively calm. The captain told me it was because the stabilisers don't work all that well when sailing slowly as we were, it was noticeably better on the crossing. We have been enjoying the small ships but did find this to be a little less spacious then the slightly larger vessels of Crystal and Viking where the extra space more than offsets for the slightly larger amount of passengers. The highlights of the ship were the library space and the crows nest however it was noticeable in bad weather conditions that internal public space can be difficult to find. The less favourable aspects of the ship was the lack of a full promenade for walking but Azamara has cleverly made the top deck above the pool an area exclusively for walking (something that was lacking on Seabourn). The partial promenades are an excellent place for lounging and watching the ocean. Speaking of lounging, the sun loungers are the best we have come across - the cushioning was impressive. There is a lot of comfortable furniture around the ship and it is obvious that Azamara is aimed at those who mostly like to relax. Fellow passengers were very friendly and the vibe is definitely casual and was noticeably more relaxed than some of the other premium lines, this suited us perfectly. It seemed the majority of passengers were either regular Azamara or Celebrity cruisers. It is definitely a social atmosphere and meeting fellow passengers was easy. At first it seemed nightlife was non existent until we discovered the disco was rocking every night on the first leg. On the second leg there was still a lot of activity in the evening but it tended to be more towards the Den around the piano player. Cabins - we had 2 different ocean view cabins. The first was on deck 6 and was an obstructed view. The room was an unusual shape. It was quite small but with some imagination the storage was plentiful. The bed was super comfortable and the linens and towels clearly new but the room had no couch. The shape of the room meant that getting changed was easy and you did not tend to obstruct one another. Liana our attendant was phenomenal. Our second cabin was your more typical layout located on deck 4 with unobstructed view. It was a larger cabin but we had to have the coffee table removed as it blocked 90% of the passage into the room. While this room was preferable it was noticeable that we tended to get more tangled when trying to get ready. One slight annoyance of this location is that the corridor was often blocked when in port which meant long walks to get back to public areas. The major issue with both cabins were the infamous showers. Small would be an understatement and add to this the uncomfortable feeling of shower curtains and it was not a pleasant experience. Often I resorted to having a shower at the gym facilities after having a steam. There is probably little Azamara could do to fix this but it does feel noticeably less luxurious compared to its small ship rivals. Similarly on this negative note was the in room entertainment system, incredibly poor. No on demand offerings at all and even the cruise ship information such as maps and cameras seemed very old technology (how does this happen on a new ship?) Dining - the ship has the MDR, buffet, poolside patio and 2 specialty restaurants. The MDR was a lovely but extremely busy room. The breakfast offered here was the best I have come across with interesting alternatives such as shashuka and asian inspired dishes and the breakfast steak was one of the best I have had. Dinner was generally good with a large menu with plenty of variety. We found that the daily specials tended to be the best along with simple meat dishes. The quality of meat was good relative to other lines, fish was hit or miss and more exotic dishes tended to fail. The buffet was good without being great, the freshly made sandwiches at lunchtime being the highlight and the daily roasts. The outdoor eating area is lovely. We did not eat dinner here but it was a different theme each night. The patio did the usual burgers but had a nice salad bar and at night was a good casual alternative focusing primarily on meat dishes. The specialty restaurants are a steak house and an Italian, $30 for each. The food and service in each was excellent and a noticeably better experience than the mdr which is not always the case. It was noticeable that there is a lack of asian options onboard compared to other small lines. Room service was very good but the inability to see the mdr menu on the tv or app is ridiculous and means you have to leave your room. Bars/drinks - there are plenty of bars for a small ship with the dedicated coffee bar being very popular. The main bars are the Den and Living room which are both great. The restaurants all have small bars as well. Bar service was very good and we rarely waited too long. Quality of drinks was average. Much better than on Seabourn but well short of the standard we experienced on Crystal. Similar to Viking where it depended a little on the bartender. Azamara includes basic drinks which is generally good and helps add to the social atmosphere. For me the major problem was with the drinks packages and it was noticeable this was frustrating for a large number of fellow guests. The premium package purports to offer premium beers and spirits. In the case of beer this is not true it simply adds more of the usual standard brands, there was nothing resembling a craft beer and there was no pilsener or pale ale at all. Again it could be debated whether the additional spirits are premium. The ultimate package adds "premium" wines and water and some more spirits. However, of the 8 wines 3 were missing, of the 6 scotches 3 were missing. There is no dessert wines at all included - I have never seen this, they would not even include a cheap chilean option from the menu. Onboard management complained of supply issues in South America and a lack of authority to adjust what is included. If this is the case Azamara head office should be sued for false advertising, if onboard management cannot adjust what is included then everything must be available. Further to these problems obtaining a glass of the ultimate wines in the restaurant regularly took between 15 and 40 minutes which was unacceptable. As time went on and complaints became more frequent the sommeliers (only 3 on the whole ship) began using alternative brands and stocking the nearby bars but why the wines are not put in the restaurant makes no sense. Viking has the same system and yet was never a problem as they simply stored the wine next to the inclusive options. On a small number of occasions I was poured included wine instead of the premium and twice witnessed standard spirits being used in my cocktails, this is unacceptable when you have paid extra for the better products. This was my major gripe on the cruise and noticeably cheapened the entire cruise experience. It felt like we were constantly having to discuss problems related to premium beverages. Azamara would be wise to change to one premium drinks package and have the products readily at hand especially as it spent considerable time and man power marketing the packages! Activities - trivia, trivia and more trivia - an overload. We love participating but surely a little more variety of activities might be appropriate and more variety of questions for those on b2b's. The first cruise was port intensive so there was little in the way of onboard activities and we found the port lecturer to be rude and uninformative. The second cruise was packed with trivias and lecture, we loved the art classes but could not participate in other activities as they were all scheduled at the same time. Also the timetable never changed day to day which led to a feeling of reliving the same day over and over. There was a number of fitness classes that were enjoyable although the instructor was not inspiring. The ship has table tennis and shuffleboard however due to location both are impractical for use. Entertainment - hit or miss. There was some particularly memorable performances such as the local tango act, the capoeira dance group, Amanda the ACD show and the ballroom dancers. However the production shows were simple (band was good though), the comedian was racist and on a couple of nights there was simply a bad movie. We had one Azamazing evening which was excellent and logistically impressive although we were the last back and only just made dinner time. Both white nights were hit by poor weather, the first simply moved indoors and the party continued on the second however the entertainment did not follow indoors and it fizzled in comparison. We found the CD to not be personable, he often walked around the ship but didn't seem to mingle much with guests. Strangely his wife did a number of performances but apparently was not an employee or contractor - we found this strange and pondered whether there could be an insurance problem in the unlikely event something went wrong. Also seemed strange to give so much time to her when Amanda the ACD was clearly much more talented and enjoyable and we even noticed that on white night the employed singers would have to miss out on a microphone in lieu of her participating. On the first leg the ACD Lee was a lovely guy who was very personable with the guests. The Trio band used in the bars were clearly talented but the set was so old fashioned, you were lucky if you got to hear something from the 60s. While we are in our early 40s and younger than most on the ship the general music of the ship was way too old and it was noticeable that few people danced until a modern song was played. Also the DJ in the disco did not have wifi so it was impossible for him to play requested songs not on his list. The piano player had a great knowledge but seemed to be lacking confidence when it came to singing although he improved markedly on the second leg. Service - the highlight of the ship. Probably the most friendly crew we have encountered (2nd to Crystal on overall performance). I guess service needs to be at a premium to balance the lower quality hardware.but they definitely delivered. Many of the crew remembered our names quickly and our preferences. Officers were more visible on the 2nd leg but often you had to approach them to actually interact. Disembarkation was earlier than other cruise lines. Overall a relaxing cruise and very good value for money compared to main lines. The vibe felt similar to celebrity but obviously much more intimate. Crew friendliness is their main strength. Personally we like a slightly larger ship (900-1000 passengers such as Crystal and Viking) with a greater variety of activities but can see why Azamara has such a loyal following. Read Less

This was our seventh Azamara cruise. Rio was on our bucket list. We chose this cruise because we liked Azamara and we had never been to Brazil. Our last Azamara cruise was to the Baltic last August on the Journey. The Pursuit does not live up to the Azamara brand. The food was, at best, mediocre. Windows Cafe served mostly highly spiced Asian and Mexican food at lunch and dinner. The breakfasts were the same every day. Often, the pancakes and waffles were stuck to the serving pan, so they were dried out and inedible. Breakfasts in the main restaurant were better, but you had to ask for things like eggs over medium or poached eggs. The breakfast menu contained a lot of Asian and Indian items, along with some French items, not normal breakfast fare. Service in both Windows and the main dining room was great. On the second day of the cruise, the cruise ship ran out of diet decaffeinated soda. Didn’t matter what brand, they had none. Just Diet Coke. This is supposed to be an upscale cruise line. Almost every day, the vegetables were broccoli and cauliflower. No green beans, no peas, no carrots, just broccoli and cauliflower. Again, this is supposed to be an upscale cruise line. Except for the four singers and the orchestra, the entertainment was pitiful - a tango show that was more slide show than dancing, a mentalist (two times), and the cruise director and his wife singing old standards off key. The Azamazing evening in Montevideo consisted of a 30 minute bus ride to an old theater, where they handed you a glass of wine as you walked in, then took it away four steps and two minutes later when you entered the theater. Waste of wine, although it wasn’t that good anyway. The show consisted of about 40 performers in very colorful costumes in a Carnival type celebration. There was some singing, but mostly it was very loud drumming. Along with flashing lights. Then back to the ship to wait in line for 20 minutes to reboard. We did get nice Carnival masks as souvenirs. The White Night celebration was held despite a forecast of rain. The food was very good. It started raining about 10 minutes into the show, so everyone left. Some folks went to the bar on Deck 10, many others just left. Many times, the entire ship smelled like sewage. I believe they were having problems with the plumbing system. The smell permeated the ship. Three days in a row, late afternoon, there was very loud banging next to our room, where there was an access panel. It lasted almost an hour each time. We took three shore excursions from Azamara. All three were overpriced, probably double what a similar excursion from a dockside purveyor would have cost. At Paraty, the tender ride was 40 minutes. The town, a UNESCO site has very uneven cobblestone streets, and walking was difficult. Many people went back to the ship after a few minutes trying to negotiate the ship. Several of the ports were tendered. The crew did an excellent job getting passengers on and off the tenders. The Le Club Voyage Representative never even bothered to welcome us on board, although it was our seventh Azamara cruise and we are also Celebrity Elite Plus. Azamara did nothing to recognize brand loyalty. The Guest Relations staff was not very helpful and took their time accommodating passengers. We waited five minutes for two Guest Relations Representatives to help us, because they were trying to align a printout on special paper. Apparently, the printer had more priority than the paying passengers. If the Pursuit represents the future of Azamara, we are finished with the cruise line. Both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity treat their guests better. Read Less

We wanted to experience South America. With one exception (Paraty) the ports of call did not disappoint. The Azamazing evening was a Carneval show in Montevideo. It was well organized and great entertainment. We bought the indulgence package which was well worth the extra money. We also got upgraded to a suite without asking ! That alone should make it five stars but there were some downsides as well. - One of the ‘guest relations’ staff turned out to be anything but. The others were great. - Because we had a lot of OBC, we booked some tours. The ‘gaucho’ tour in Uruguay was disappointing as we went to a dairy and crop farm. Talk about false advertising. - We had butler although he did not really enhance the experience. - The indulgence package included the specialty restaurants. However, it’s not open seating and booking something was very though. The attitude of the person doing the booking did not help. - The app needs work. It’s not updated and does not match the daily program. There is a lot of paper that could be saved...... The food never disappoints and the staff go out of there way to please you. The entertainment was solid and there are plenty of activities. The specialty restaurants are also top notch in food and service as was the Chef’s table. The staff was great in helping us transfer to another room for next cruise. Read Less

My husband and I had recently a 13 days cruise from San Antonio ,Chile ,crossing Chelian Patagonia,Falkland islands, Montevideo and finally ended in Buenos Aires. The ship was tired and needs to be refubrished, all furnishing equipment also. Food in the self service ,Lido deck was monotonous and with limited variety.The quality of food was medium. The same quality was in the Dine In restaurant since the chef and kitchen was the same. During all cruise long we had the sense that everything was under economic restrictions Eg. During our stay we had only one hand soap(!) and only one shower cap(!)The personnel in Lido deck was serving you the quantity of the main course probably for the same reason. Entertainment was very cheap and childish (!) All TV sets in the staterooms were very old fashioned and the programme was limited i.e Only 3 movies per day ,and 3 news stations. Of course there was a video player in the stateroom and you could borrow movies if the player was not out of order!! The Wi Fi was very expensive. We tried to purchase 1 day for 15 $ but with this amount you could be able to see only your facebook and therefore you have to upgrade the quality by adding 10 more US$ ie. totally 25 US$ per day. Last but not least were the alcoholic prices(more expensive) which differed from the price list that we have found in the internet. Finally we have to admit that the whole ship was very clean, also the state rooms,and the public toilets.Embarkation was easy and disembarkation also Read Less

We choose this cruise due to the nature & places the cruise went. We knew there would be things we'd never see again. The ports were fabulous. There were so many things to see. The service was great & staff very friendly. There were many excursions daily. The only thing we feel would be better is if prior to the trip an itinerary of the each days activities had been sent. We were told casual clothing which I thought was for dinner so I didn't pack correctly. I thought we'd be in bathing suits most of the time so for myself I didn't pack tee shirts or shorts. As far as the food there was plenty of choices but all fancy. We would have preferred just plain simple food(meatloaf, hamburgs, etc). The food we ate was good but we didn't eat much. Lunch salads needed to have a lot more items to put in the salad. Usually there was only 2 items other than the lettuce. The ship & cabin was great. Due to the price I don't think we'd go again but you never know. Read Less
