Carnival needs to fire the head chef of this ship. I’m not even sure the food met the standards of a typical Denny’s restaurant. Bland and overcooked or undercooked or just plain stale, was what we found at every meal. The pinnacle steakhouse food (sides and appetizers) were done well but my New York steak, had so much gristle in it, it couldn’t be cut. The pinnacle steakhouse staff also has a very bad attitude. We made a reservation for two at 5:30 PM and arrived about 10 minutes early. We walked in the door and saw no one so we continued on into the dining room where we were met by a very rude female manager? who (non politely) told us to leave because they were having a meeting. She quickly ushered us out the door. When we were allowed back in and seated it was obvious that her attitude had set the mood with the servers who again were not friendly and polite and were obviously under trained. Everything they said was if it had been scripted. They knew the words but their actions showed it was forced. At the Lido buffet, other than the bussers and some of the servers, the staff was very mediocre at best. In the black pearl dining room, Even our headwaiter admitted that the food preparation was subpar. Entertainment. One of the song and dance shows was great but the other one (70s/80s/90s) was simply awful. It was so bad we were thinking that maybe there was something wrong with the speaker system which put the singing off key. It was a terrible production. Many of the staff on the ship left you with the impression they did not want to be there. Obvious very low morale. At this point I’m reconsidering ever sailing with carnival again. If it wasn’t for the fact that we have a family cruise coming up on one of their other ships Carnival would not be our choice. Read Less

The food menu and quality of the food is the high point of all cruising expectations. For the past 6 years I've noticed a declining trend of these items. This cruise was the worst yet. The dinner menu available selection has been reduced and to add insult you have added a pricing list for additional foods. What fool agreed to this I wonder? Lobster night was a disaster as the lobster meat was tasteless and tiny. What is with the limitation of butter of butter on the dinning tables for crying out loud? I've been a loyal Princess cruiser for many years, but not any more until you get your act together. The main language is english, yet the captains announcements were not understandable. Passengers were asking one another what he said. One activity we really enjoy is to watch movies on the large screen under the stars. There simply weren't enough seats available and many had to go elsewhere. Really? How difficult might it have been to observe this problem and address it? We normally aren't complainers and we hope these issues are corrected. We have had only good experiences with Princess, but as of late you haven't delivered as you once did. I hope my thoughts might inspire you to return to what you once were. Read Less

I took some advice from a friend saying I should take a cruise, so I chose the 7 days from Long Beach To Cabo. We stayed in Cabo for 2 days an Puerto Vallarta for a day. The splendor's interior decorating is similar to the old Circus Circus Casino in Vegas that was demolished. It has a very 1970's pink and silver color scheme. I bought a $500 pre-paid expenses voucher because I didn't think I would drink enough to need the "cheers package", which was 15 drinks a day. I spent a lot of my time trying to get a drink and being turned down because I didn't get the "cheers package". I even had one waiter ask if I was sure I wanted a bloody-mary, which he never brought. I was stone sober, so have no idea what he was thinking. Anyways, the food was included. Unfortunately, everyplace we ate was pretty bad. I got sick a few times from the food and my wife did too. The room staff is polite, just get ready to deal with the bartenders. They are very argumentative. Read Less

There were few good singers. (The best singers were in the Voice competition) The Comedian was great and his shows are highly recommended. The solo male singer had the most walk-outs in the first five minutes I have ever seen. I felt bad, but had to leave after 15 minutes because wasn't very good. They had extremely poor internet service, and when I inquired I was told that was just the way it is. So if you don't mind spending a lot for service that is below dialup levels from the old days, you'll be ok. They are unable to cook a steak with a little pink (medium). The first they brought me was well done and I have a wide range of satisfaction with steaks and prime rib. Then they brought me one that was nearly raw, and obviously unsafe. This happened again so I gave up on red meats. My wife would give a higher rating to the food, but she doesn't eat red meat. No naturalists to tell me what kind of whales we sighted. Seemed like more lines than in most cruises. With only three ports, and such a short time in Cabo San Lucas (with tendering), it is important to like more time on the ship if you take this cruise Read Less

This was my second time with ncl was my 16th Cruise. The food was slow to get out to us once it did it was barely lukewarm. I was in a sweet and had special place that I could have breakfast and lunch. When I ate there the food service was great. It was how it should be in all the dining rooms. When we where on the pool deck there was 2 slide they where not open very much for the kids to play on. We were next to a Carnival ship at Port and there's like was open. People were going down it ours was closed and the kids wanted to go down it. It was just frustrating but I made the best of it and had a good time. Everyone on the boat was nice. There where slow to get you a drink or even ask you for a drink. I will not be going on this cruise line agine. The entertainment was good but the seats were horrible hurt my back felt like you were going to slide off them. Read Less

This was our fifth cruise in about 15 years. My mom was recently in hospice and passed away, so the 3 of us were really ready for a fun and relaxing get-away. We are a family of 3.....Me, my husband and our 15-year-old son. This cruise was NOT terrible, it was just, well.....Disappointing. For the most part the Splendor’s in pretty good shape. That’s what was so disappointing.....How mediocre it was. THE BEST; Our room steward was fantastic! She was able to help us out with any questions we had and after she cleaned our room it was emasculate! THE WORST; This ship looks tired. We were encouraged to hear that it was renovated 2 years ago, so we had high expectations, that was probably part of the problem. The only thing that looked new was the wallpaper on the cabin decks and perhaps the cabin bathroom floors. Other than that, it looks and feels like the 10-year-old ship that it is. These ships get used VERY hard and this one looks it. It needs updated sound-proofing (did not sleep a wink), cabin balconies, wood deck stairs, re-textured outdoor deck floors (slipped and fell while wet), cabin shower (0 pressure), to name a few. We also thought that the bar service was on the unfriendly side, and very sluggish. We would not choose this ship for another vacation. Read Less

I choose this cruise because of the proximity of our home and the timely was good for all 10 family members. My husband and I cruise often with over 30 cruises and I do compare ships and cruise lines. We mostly cruise Royal Caribbean but have use NLC, Holland, and Celebrity. I guess you get what you pay for! This by far was the WORST cruise we have ever taken. We can overlook a lot but when you start adding up each thing this cruise ship does not offer value for the money you spend. The food quality is poor. The buffet is awful. The food is greasy, cold, and not presented well. One morning, I wanted a biscuit and bacon (Which they serve you). The biscuit was as hard as a rock and cold and the bacon was as cold as if you got it out of the fridge. Upsetting when you stand in the long lines to get you breakfast. The Mongolian BBQ was good but the lines were always so long that we only had it once, the same with the pizza. The food was very poor and along with the mattresses it is enough to say "Never Again". But that's not even the worst. As I said this was a family vacation costing nearly $10,000 for our family. I one thing that we wanted was for everyone to have fun during the day and then have dinner together at night. When I book 5 months before the cruise everything dining option was filled. I was told by Carvinal "not to worry that when I got on the ship it would be taken care of". We were given "My time dining" which I thought was fine...no problem. First night arrive at the dining room Black Pearl and they tell me that they only have ONE table for 10 in the dining room and it was already taken, would we like 2 tables!! NO! So Isabela the Maitre de came to talk to us and they said they would put 2 table together for us. Fine. Now 45 minutes later they seat us in the back, next to the exit doors. Ok this is the first night and I cal overlook it. That night it took nearly 3 hours for us to have a complete meal. Isabela came to the table and said it would be taken care of for day 2. Well, this procedure happened EVERY Night. I spoke to Neil in the Golden Pearl trying to either have a different dining as Isabela stated that the Golden Pearl had many larger tables. About the 3rd day, I went down and spoke again to Neil. He said would work on it and notify me with a message to my room. Never any message. Ok. This was our 50th Wedding anniversary and I just wanted to spend time,,,,not waiting time with my family! On the last night, I thought ok we've been patient and they will have a table for us. Who was I fooling! My son going down to request a table and they told him a 30 minute wait, no problem but they only had 2 tables.....I cannot tell you how mad I was! After 7 days they still could not get their act together. Finally, between Neil and Isabel they found 2 table and used them together. We arrived for dinner at 6:10. At 8 we left the table before dessert because we had missed the first show and unwilling to miss the next. Don't get me started on their Easter service....no minister..put on by the crew who couldn't even pronounce half the words in the scripture and kept asking for help. Never Again!!! Read Less

My family has taken 3 Disney cruises prior to this one. We really wanted to try something different. We loved that this cruise went out of L.A. We also loved that we were goingvto be going to a new port, Cabo. We were very impressed with the embarkation and debarkation process. It was speedy and the staff was very friendly. Our cabin attendant was exceptional as well. However, the food was so, so and the staff was overall unfriendly and not all that welcoming. It us never a good to feel like an imposition. We often felt that way and were really disappointed in how unwelcoming many of the staff were. This was definitely no Disney experience. I know that Disney sets a high bar but this was not even close. Disney's attention to detail is second to none. They are so welcoming and everyone goes out of their way to smile and make you feel truly special. The food is also excellent on a Disney cruise. The quality and variety is so much better. We will definitely be going back to Disney when it comes to cruising. Read Less

I choose this cruise becasue of the port it left from and the timing of the actual cruise. I had never been on Norwegian but have cruised multiple times before. I have not expereinced the Freestyle cruising that they have and abviously did not do enough exploration into what that meant prior to the cruise. In the end, it was a lack of that knowledge that most likely made this a poor cruise. From the beginning we were asked to upcharge things. The first thing I noticed was a request to "bid" on an upgrade of our stateroom. I did not participate. WE had the option of slecting a package with unlimited adult beverages (which was very nice) , along with either 3 $50 credits for shore excrusions or 3 free meals at the specialty restaurants. Having cruised many times on Princess, where the food in the main dining hall was outstanding, we elected to get the shore excursion credit, thinking we would enjoy the main dinning room as we had in the past. This was a mistake. Freestyle cruising gets you the main dining or other "free" dinning halls. There was a wait for these places as we were not assigned a time for dinner in teh main dining or other free dining halls. The service was poor on most occasions as we had different staff at each meal. The food was marginal and not hot. It was very much like a poor convention type quality food and not gourmet in anyway. One evening we waiting 2 hours to get a table and then we were sat at a bar. Our order was incorrect and service was poor. For that issue, we were offered a "free" meal at one of the specialty restaurants. It was then that we realized THIS is where the food and service one expects from a cruise was occuring. And the cruise line was getting money for the "extra" service that is included in other cruise lines. Room service was limited to just a continental breakfast for "free". Any other items were an extra charge. We were charged for general exercise classes that were no better than the group exercise classes other cruise line offer up on the basketball deck. We could not use the $50 credit one day and that was lost. I would have thought since there were two of us we would have both recieved the credit for the shore excursion but the amount was given to the cabin only and was not transferable. Staff were not always helpful. There were of course those exceptional people that we recognized and thanked, but on the whole I did not feel very welcomed in many places on the ship. There was only one pool and since this was spring break it was overtaken with children. On Princess there was an adult pool which I appreciated. The spa had an indoor space you could purchase a membership from, much like on other cruises but it was all enclosed without any deck area outside. The ship is old. The chairs in the spa waiting room were worn and had holes in them. The stateroom also needed updating with a small poor TV and a worn out sofa couch. T The shore excursion I took were some of the best I have had. I went on a true sailing vessle in PV and did mountain biking near the coast in Cabo. I did not find anything to my liking in Mazatlan. The spa services were good but expensive. They had a sliding scale that was a little hard to follow. I signed up early inthe cruise but should have waiting for specials offered as the cruise went on. I also purchased some product and one of the vials of lotion was dried up and empty - now what do I do? It was $55! The stage entertainment was very good however the small bar entertainment was dated and second rate in comparison. The one gathering place for may events that the cruise staff hosted was old, dark, dated and cold. Becasue of that I did not participate in those events like trivia, bingo etc. The casino was smoke filled and again old. Shopping was limted and not worth the time. There wasnt much in the ship store to buy and the other area had limited supplies (my purume was not carried by the store for instance). Most of the public restrooms had only one stale working - all others were out of order. The web site infomration prior to the cruise was not helpful and hard to navigate. Both myself and my friend could not find a packing list or what to print before the cruise. We therefor showed up without luggage tags or even knowing our room assignment. I would not recommend this ship or this cruise line in the future. Read Less

Let me start by saying I LOVE CRUISING and HAVE LOVED almost everything on all cruises I have been on. I have cruised over a dozen times on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Holland America, Princess, etc. This was our first (AND LAST) NCL cruise. I chose this ship and itinerary because the cruise date coordinated with school vacation and it departed LA. I chose it, unfortunately, in spite of poor reviews of the ship. And those poor reviews were so correct! The ship is old, poorly designed and completely lacking in comfort: no comfortable lounges (ie, nowhere to sit in Atrium except in small and uncomfortable Java cafe), small and noisy bar areas (ie, 5 O'Clock somewhere) etc. From the moment we stepped aboard in San Pedro (port of LA) we saw terribly worn, dirty and tattered carpeting and upholstery. The first impression of the Atrium and then the Market Cafe was not good and the disappointment continued from there on. For the most part our cabins were OK - except for one balcony cabin that had a balcony door that didn't close properly and wind whistled through all of the time. The bathrooms on interior and balcony cabins were fine and the showers were comparable or better than on most lines. The mattress was the most uncomfortable we have had on any cruise. One of our cabins (Interior 5087) was noisy all night (it sounded as if furniture was being moved directly above us all night long). The dining in all venues always seemed chaotic and noisy and extremely slow in some-ie, first night in Versailles. Production shows and technology in shows and games was well executed but it didn't seem the caliber of the show matched the caliber in the execution. Service throughout the ship was adequate but seemed no crew really were enthusiastic (except Jose, on Cruise Director staff). Read Less

Our itinerary was supposed to be the first 2 days at sea while getting into warmer weather where everyone could enjoy the ship. Well on day 1 (Monday) the captain stated on the loud speakers that the ship had a mechanical issue and couldn't make 24Knots and he was going to change the itinerary. Was supposed to be Wed. in Puerto Vallarta, Thur. in Mazatlán and Fri. Cabo San Lucas. Well he went to Cabo on Tuesday. Originally supposed to be 9-6pm but with the new day the times changed to 11-5 but that didn't really happen due to tender boats arriving later. We had 10 in our group and a couple of us had made fishing reservation for the original Friday on a private boat for $600. That was booked on a credit card and the boat was booked for Tuesday since the captain changed us up. Well after several phone calls we eventually received a refund (very relieved). We didn't have time for an excursion with the last minute changes so we got to shore around 1 and walked around, up to Cabo Wabo and back. The ship requested everyone be back on board by 4pm. Total cluster F if you know what I mean. Needless to say but I'll say it. Cabo was a bust for everyone. So as day 2 is coming to an end we can't find anything good to say about the ship. Our stateroom was a Portal Window on the 4th deck. One bed has a huge crater in the middle and the other is pretty good. The toilet area just stinks the whole trip as if the sewage smell is coming from the storage tanks. As we walk about the ship all the women in our group are complaining about the bathrooms throughout the ship. Most are out of order and are overflowing or just plain don't work. We did tell staff about the issue but after 3 days we gave up. They were never repaired before our departure. So navigating the ship was a problem also. It didn't flow right and after 5 days we were still meeting people that were lost. That didn't happen on our Carnival cruise. You would be trying to get to the back of the ship and would hit a wall, you'd have to go the other side of the ship to get through to the back. It was very weird. The food on the pool deck was pretty gross. On Carnival they have Guy Fieri burger and they put a fresh one on your bun where on NCL the burger sit in a platter with a quarter inch of grease under a heat lamp and after the last one is picked up they drop in more. No telling how long they sit out there. Same with the French fries. There are 2 dining rooms with the included food. Aqua and Versailles. The Aqua was horrible, service was so poor we never went back. Went to Versailles and was treated really well. Always seem to sit in same general area and saw familiar servers. No complaints there. The buffet is an average buffet but the eggs are very runny in the morning so if you go to the omelet bar you can fried, scrambled or an omelet to your liking. Now O'Sheehans Bar and Grill was a place we frequented. They have full service and window seats. Food comes hot and ready, service was really good too. So the bars, up on deck 14 I think was the Beir Garten. Almost always a line with 3 bartenders going. On average I'd say 10 people in line. 5 O'clock Bar was pretty good. had table servers so the wait wasn't too bad. Gatsbys made strong drinks for us. A little too crowded most of the time with little to no seating. The Casino. Pretty much a smokers haven. Poor air circulation and no air conditioning. With all the machines generating heat you'd think they would have thought that through. They had 2 portable A/C units at each side trying to cool it down. Didn't work unless you were sitting right by them. Also the Casino bar. Beware because we had the drink package and the casino added a charge on my account for almost $25. I caught it and it was removed by the front desk after they couldn't find a signed receipt. Yeah that's because I didn't sign anything ya goof, I had the drink package and didn't upgrade my liquor ya fools. The I Concierge App, it lets you communicate via text or phone call throughout the ship they say. 5 of the 10 of us purchased it. $9.99 each. It sucks. My room on deck 4 had no service there at all. I had sent messages and days later were still sending. Buyer beware on that one. It was the same for all of us. Messages wouldn't send or be received about half the time. Puerto Vallarta was Wednesday. Did an excursion through the ship on a Catamaran to a fishing village, hike to a waterfall and some snorkeling. Had a great time on that. Mazatlán was Thursday. Did another excursion to a private resort with 2 drinks and buffet lunch. Had use of the whole facility. We sat on the beach all day. Lots of stingrays so we stayed out of the water. One guy tried the water and lost to a stingray. Messed his foot up pretty good. He was warned though. So now we are headed back to Port of Los Angeles with 2 days at sea. Well the weather was getting colder and colder and the wind was blasting pretty good. Couldn't use the pool or even the outside bar because of the weather. That's why we wanted 2 days at sea heading into warmer climate not the other way so basically the ships captain and mechanical issue screwed the time we could really enjoy being outside. The seas were 7.5 feet or so and the ship was moving about a lot more then usual. Some people got sea sick. The entertainment was pretty good. Saw 3 shows. The bingo was a joke. Got talked into 1 afternoon. Buy 1 get 1 free. Okay then, $49. Wow, that is way more then Carnival was. Any ways the wife and I each play a card. 1st game 5 people win, they split about $340. Now the room was standing room only so they sold a lot of cards. 2nd game 3 people split $350 and last game is Blackout. If you get it before 47 numbers or some crap you'll win $3500, if not $350. What? Yea so 1 person wins the $350 and that was that. I'm really wondering how much the ship made off that scam. Sheesh We had a decent time but it wasn't worthy of what we expected. We had way more fun on Carnival last year. I'm not quite sure I'd take another Norwegian Cruise unless they offered me a killer deal but I'll never take the Norwegian Star again. Maybe we'll try Royal Caribbean. Read Less

Decided to take this cruise with my husband as I love to cruise and love Mexico but my husband hadn't experienced either. Talked my best friend, her boyfriend and my parents into joining us and we were all very disappointed. The food left a lot to be desired, the service was worse than a diner in the main dining rooms. (Stale chips, bread, wrong temperature of the meat, drinks never filled) luckily we paid for a dining package and the steakhouse and french restaurant were great. The buffet closed late night with the only dining option being a 24 hour pub that was awful in service and food. There were extra charges on our account that took days and numerous attempts to get help before they we're fixed. There were ship issues changing the port schedule which I understand can happen. However, they cancelled an excursion last minute after they had said was going to happen the night before, with no attempt to find an alternative. Overall definitely not my best cruise, we won't be back on this ship. I did answer their feedback questionnaire and waited over a week to write this review as I had hoped they would want to make it right. Read Less

this 2 week cruise seemed to be a great deal until... Embarkation was a nightmare....longer lines than ever experienced & we had paid an upgrade fee & were assured at checkin our bags would be delivered properly since our room had changed.NOPE! After hours of waiting around, my husband went to find them himself & brought them to our cabin. We weren't able to get any sleep the first 3 nites of the cruise...a loud banging behind our bed went on constantly & with numerous calls & visits to customer service we were told sorry there was nothing they could do...no rooms available on this huge ship...not one! On the 4th exhaustive day I lost it & insisted someone come take apart the wall if necessary so we could get some needed rest...after all, don't u go on a cruise to relax!?! Finally someone with a brain came to the room, heard the banging & said it was unacceptable of course & miraculously another room appeared....it had to be available all along since we had sailed days earlier but they weren't willing to give it to us until we lost it! Would've been an easy fix! The food was either pretty good or terrible...most of the staff was very nice but not well trained at all...don't think they're paid as well as other cruise lines because the daily service charge is higher than on other ships so they must charge customers more to subsidize that! The drinks were also higher especially for the brands they poured. Overall after paying for beverages & wifi etc the cruise cost more than many we've taken on MUCH nicer ships! They do major maintenance on the ships while sailing so you get all the toxic paint smells while sitting out reading or sunning & even on our balconies! Many of the seats in the theater were broken & could not be used for the shows Read Less

We use to love Carnival and are Gold members. However after the tragedy of the last cruise, I'm not certain we will be cruising with them again. The boat was filthy and extremely run down. The fact that your shoes constantly make the sticky noise no matter where you were should have been an indicator. Also the fact that they absolutely no longer enforce any time of hand sanitizing for guests should have tipped us off. A week later we all got off the ship extremely sick, even tho we were adamant about washing our hands and using the santizer when available. The 1st floor smells of stale, sewage-ish water. The gym is the most disgusting thing on the boat. I should have looked at the equipment before using it. The amount of dirt and obvious dandruff or skin on the equipment was enough to turn my stomach and even tho they have a spot for sanitizing wipes, it was never filled once on our 7 day cruise. (avoid at all costs) The spa, the tiles were coming off the walls, and the paint on the roof was in bubbles or peeled off, with large areas missing. Don't bother reading the labels in the showers, the buttons were all labeled wrong. The staff doesn't look remotely happy. And by day 4 we stopped dining in our main dining room because you would ask for a drink and you would never get it. Even the bar staff didn't look remotely happy. Hard to navigate the ship with half the 3-4 floor closed off, difficult to get an elevator (don't wear heels!) Unhappy staff. This boat needs a serious overhaul. Read Less

We wanted a cruise to Mexico that sailed from a central port for our extended family. The cabins are smaller than comparable cruise lines. The ship is 18 years old, but the bigger issues were the public restrooms were out of order, unclean, lacking supplies. The disembarkation process was the most unorganized process I have ever witnessed. They allowed all the Walk-offs (Those who carried their own luggage) off first. They assigned those who checked their luggage a time slot. We had prepaid for transportation to/from the airport to the ship at a rate of $25 per person. Those who did not prepay were charged $20 per person. When it came time to disembark, we were supposed to be off the ship by 0900 (Their Schedule). At 1000 we got in line and finally got off the ship by 1100. This was absolutely the worst organized process I have ever seen. If you asked when you would get off, they would only tell you when they call your color. My father got tired of waiting as we had a flight to catch. He was in a wheel chair being pushed by a porter when the ship turned him around. My mother was also in a wheel chair being pushed by a porter and they let her off the ship. This alone is reason enough I will never sail again on Norwegian and I recommend that you dont either. We prepaid tax/gratuities for a special dining package. When we attempted to make reservations on Day 2 of the cruise, WE were told that there were no openings. When asked about our money, We were told sorry, nothing they could do. (About $100) The twin beds were made into a King Bed. There was no strap on it so everytime you laid on the bed, they separated. The bottom sheet was a flat sheet with knots tied onto the corners. The sheets wouldnt stay on the bed. The bathrooms were so small, when you sat on the toilet, your knees touched the wall. Read Less

The service on the Norwegian Star was average at best. Most bars and restaurants were horrible for service. Rude and lackluster staff all the way around. The ship is in serious need of a renovation. It’s old and outdated. Want to grab a quick drink? Forget about it. Huge lines to get drinks. Dinner service and restaurants were absolutely unacceptable in terms of service. Food was average. Le Bistro and Carney’s great. La Cucina horrible. Public restrooms were constantly flooded. None of the staff were smiling...ever. They were very inconvenienced to have to wait on guests. At dinner in the Versailles dining room, after over an hour and a half of horrible service, we informed our waitress that we were in a hurry as we were going to the show. She told us, “No problem.” She never turned out ticket in, I asked for a manager and explained what was going on. He went and talked to her and she handed him our dessert ticket. No apologies or anything. She had never turned the ticket in. I’m positive she did it on purpose too. Read Less

I was taken on this cruise as a guest, that my sister earned from Barona Casino. The only positive thing to say was , the entertainment was great. The rest, not so good. The food was poor, drink package was watered down drinks, beds are hard, never personally met our room steward, I got food poisoning halfway threw the trip, . My sister came down with a terrible cold toward end of trip. Couldn't wait to get home after 7 days. Will not be taking a cruise anytime soon on the Norwegian ship. I have had good experiences on other cruises, such as Princess, even Carnival. What ever happened to Lobster night on cruises! We also missed formal night. Food on cruises use to be so good without having to pay extra at the specialty restaurants. We did not take any children, this cruise wasn't too bad, as far as loud children. I have been on a cruise in the past on Princess that had a lot of spring breakers and little children. Also there are signs by the spa's stating that no children allowed, but they were taking up the spa's anyway. So overall this was by far the worst cruise I have ever been on! Read Less

We picked this cruise simply on price and an inherent need to get away from the snow for a week. The boarding process was quite smooth and quite liked the "scheduled" boarding time as our stateroom was available as soon as we got onboard. Unfortunately the experience deteriorated quickly after. The ship is poorly laid out and difficult to navigate. the overbearing PINK was abnoxious and the staff overall avoided eye contact and if we did not say hello, or good morning, we would be hard pressed to even gain acknowledgement (beyond our room steward or servers in the dining room). The live music was poorly situated in the atrium and the volume was excessively loud at all hours. I felt sorry for anyone with a stateroom in the middle of the ship as you could not excape the volume. We have cruised with NCL for many years and thought this would be a nice opportunity to try a different company. While we did compare to our experience on NCL a lot, the glaring difference we found besides basic acknowledgement, was the sheer lack of hand sanitizers throughout the ship. On NCL they were at every entrance to resaurants and every elevator bank, while there were very few located on this ship. I can honestly say I MISSED hearing washy washy and have a staff member spray your hands before entering the dining room, Carnival could learn a lot from NCL. The ports were enjoyable and the tender process for Cabo was efficient, however we arrived an hour early from when tender tickets were to be issued and got tender #1 right away. I would hate to see where we would have been if we had gone to line up even 20 minutes later. When you state a time, I think you should stick to it even if we did luck out and get our tender tickets early. The staff looked to be run off their feet and always rushing from one activity to another. We attended a trivia session and the first words out of the hosts mouth was an apology because she would haev to cut trivia short to make it to her next gig. Not to mention the person who had the room booked for the next event was waiting right beside her to push her out the door at the appropriate time. I think you need to either have more staff or schedule events a bit better. We spent most of our free time on the ship in the Spa and the Serentiy area in the big loungers and the ClamShell loungers trying to relax away from the static and noise, only to find that the music from the spa (not really relazing spa music to start with) was blaring on deck and in the spa at a volume that made it difficult to "relax". To the ship designers, if you are building an area for people to relax and call it "serentiy" maybe dont put the mini golf on the deck above with screaming children. I cant count how many stray golf balls landed either on me or right beside me from a wayward "putt"! Food, what can one say about food on a cruise ship other than, stay away from the runny scrambled eggs. The dining experience onboard this ship left a lot to be desired. I like the ability to eat in the dining room or the option of the buffet, however the quality of the food was really sub par. the layout in the buffet made it difficult to enjoy a meal adn the seating was abhorent. you are not even allowed to pick out your own bacon for breakfast and are at the mercy of the crew to "dish it out" for you, which is difficult if the serving crew have multiple jobs to do on the serving line. this only stalled the lines from moving. If you are going to have an omlette station, do not have it in the middle of the buffet line as the time it takes to make an omlette only lengthened the time everyone else had to spend in line behind you waiting. Maybe set up a seperate ommlette station??? All in all our experience was so poor that we will definetly not go on another Carnival cruise and will stick with our tried and true NCL from here on out. Let me first preface this by saying that this was my wife and I's first cruise. We figured we would take a 4 day cruise to see if this kind of vacation suits us. We had heard positive things in the past from other cruise goers and thought we would give Carnival a shot. Getting onto the ship was ok. We were 5 minutes early for our allotted time and instead of letting us wait, which would have been the much faster line the person outside chased us down and forced us into the early line which was quite long. We got on board around 1pm. Entering the boat we were ushered to the lido buffet. Into what could only be explained as a mad ant pile of humanity, it felt more like a sardine can than a boat. It took us 30 minutes of stalking people as they ate to find a seat. Finally we did. The buffet food overall was similar to an average all-inclusive resort in Mexico, bland and cold. The shining star in the buffet was the Deli, amazing sandwiches. We could have lived off the sandwiches and Guys' burgers alone. We then went to find our stateroom. It was as we expected small but functional. We were mid ship 7 deck E135. The windows were so filthy that we could barely see out of them. We chalked this up to the joys of being at sea. Clearly a disadvantage of being on a boat that does not have any balconies. The TV only had 4 stations, TBS, TNT, TCM and one movie channel. My wife's luggage was waiting for us outside, but mine did not show up until 4 hours later. Definitely not ideal but not the end of the world. We saw several shows on board, by far the best was the comedy club, B.T. was hilarious both times we saw him. The other entertainment was very lack luster. We got off the boat at both port stops. We rent a golf cart on Catalina island and this is my wife's highlight of the entire trip, it was a blast! In Ensenada we moved along to a shuttle bus that cost $4 round trip to downtown. We were on this bus for all of 5 minutes before it dropped us off at what appeared to be a back yard make shift market place. We felt uncomfortable there so we found the nearest main road and started walking. We walked for 15-20 minutes before realized we could actually see our boat. So we just walked back to it. We are not your average 30 something travelers. We do not drink alcohol or like to party. With that being said we bought the bottomless bubbles drink package. What a waste! They don't tell you they charge you tax on the beverage you've already paid for when docked. And the only time we could use it was at sit down dinner service. The only place you can get I filled is by a waiter or at a bar, good luck with that. They have self service beer stations but you have to fight to get a soda?! In the buffet they only served lemonade and Ice tea. That's what we ended up drinking the entire cruise. Clearly We are not cruisers! now we know. Read Less

Sorry for the delay, my wife stop me till I cooled down. My wife needs a wheel chair to get on and off ship, when we got to the port we were told she needed to get in the building and then they would find a wheel chair, we waited over a hour in the VIP lounge, then when they came they only took her to the lobby of the ship and told us the third party staff could not go onto the ship, we were in a area with 30 other people trying to get to there cabins. We were traviling with 5 other couples and were seated at a table for 12 in the main dining room. The first night we did not get our food for over 2 hours, the staff turned the lights up to clear the table before we got or disserts. On the second night they served prime rib/lobster. I had the prime rib with baked potato, everyone was done with their diner before I was offered any topping for the potato so I told them where to put there diner. The head maiter'd gave me a guarantee this problem would be fixed the next night, We were happy that he did fix the problem. They put more staff and a head waiter that know how to serve a large, they should have had this all along. We had to call room service to get ice in or rooms and they would only bring a quart bag at a time ( why ) Getting off the ship was a joke, this time no wheel chair was available so we had to use a walker the hole way. As a 4 star mariner (loyalty level), I was very disappointed in the small changes that have occurred to HAL over the last 5 to 10 years. I have come to expect a better experience and was just disappointed by the food quality and generally, employees that just were doing their job. There were a couple of employees that were outstanding, but overall, they had already left for the day. The food quality has decreased, even in the Pinnacle which is more expensive and has less offerings. Attempted to eat in the dining room with any time dining, but if you don't have a set reservation time on the first day. You will wait. The hydro spa was broken for 2 days, no refund. Offered a leg massage instead. I did not go on any excursions. I have found in the past that generally the ships tours are overpriced, crowded and slow. The entertainment at night has increased, but it all seems to be at the same time. Signature of excellence (last slogan) has died. Read Less

We've been on 3 Nat Geo/Lindblad (NGL) trips and this was by far the most disappointing. This was recommended to us from many who were on the Epic Galapagos trip as a "must". So we were looking forward to this. Disappointment starts with the title of the trip. Among the Great Whales really should have been "Among the Gray Whales. The title implied that we would see many types of whales when in fact we saw two. No complaints about the ship and the food was okay. Entertainment/Activities were ok but nothing special. Service by the cleaning staff was horrible. Our room was cleaned only twice - at the beginning at the last date and only partially. Also, the evening/morning of the rough seas and some of us couldn't get out of our cabins for breakfast, when the seas calmed there was no food made available without many customers asking. You would've thought that this would've been planned for. The itinerary seemed pretty weak and overall satisfaction by NGL travelers who have done other trips thought similarly. Those travelers that were new to NGL cruises thought it was great. Which works in favor for NGL as they may try other trips. We would not do this trip again nor would we recommend it to anyone. I guess when you've been on some of the other NGL expeditions this just can't even come close!!!! Read Less

We have traveled on Carnival Cruise line once before and had no problem. This time we took our two kids on the Carnival splendor. When we arrived our room was dirty, including dental floss in the shower, toilet paper on the ground, sticky ring marks on the dresser, splattering all over The mirrors, debris left behind, dust bunnies, and a towel in the bathroom rolled up on the ground that was damp and smelled like urine. We saw staff putting back utensils that have fallen on the floor back on the buffet, although the tables were wiped down, there was food and crumbs all along the window ledges, including sticky greasy fingerprints all over glass. Our first meal at the Asian wok, included vegetables that were frozen solid, the guest in line in front of me commented to the cook, and he removed some of the vegetables to soak them in hot water. The food was poor quality, The buffet areas were always crowded, and the layout of the of the ship was so odd. It always seemed dark, and everywhere you turn it seems like it was a dead end. Our list of complaints goes on and on, and needless to say we contacted carnival cruise during and after the cruise, and they were so "generous" enough to give us a $25 credit each on our next cruise. Be prepared if you expect luxury because my comparison of this ship is that it was more like a passenger ferry than a cruise ship.--I just wrote to Holland America to explain my decision to leave the ship on day five of a seven day itinerary, A little history on me--I have done about thirty five cruises, three previously with Holland America on the Nieuw Amsterdam, Koningsdam and Eurodam--these ships were beautiful. When I booked the Oosterdam, I thought I would have a similar ship to the Eurodam (which I only did four months ago) but was shocked at the state of it: on my of my facebook postings, I stated "I am on a ship a few sailings away from the scrapyard" and it was not an exaggeration. The crew were exceptional in trying to maintain the cleanliness but there comes a point that the effort to keep up an appearance is all in vain, which was the case here, and I feel so bad for those hard working people. Unlike the other ships that had nice light, warm inviting colours, one entered into this one facing dark, drab maroon and blue--very 70s retro. As I walked down the hall to my cabin what was the most noticeable was the smell of dampness, then looking at the carpets, on most all decks, they were water stained. Not little ones here or there but the stains were making their own pattern in the carpets! The room--same drab colours, a couch that was threadbare and the arm rest black (mixed into the maroon) with dirt, the bathtub so worn that my initial reaction to all the nicks was a slight heart palpitation because I thought they were insects. The water temperature in the shower never got above luke-warm, the light fixture behind the bed was broken, about to fall off, one light needed replacing and the coffee table lever was broken so it was left in the highest position. To me it felt like the ship must be on a scheduled dry-dock sometime soon because all effort to make it look somewhat presentable was gone. Others on board seemed to enjoy it, and I am glad they could make the most of it, but with all these cruises under my belt, I felt the need to place this review for a) frequent cruisers like myself who have a certain expectation of cleanliness and a small standard of basic working order of things and b) for those who might be spending hard earned money for a first-time cruise---my advice, do another ship or wait to see if this one ever gets upgraded. In Cabos I went to the Walmart there to buy more cleaning supplies to try to get that "dirty" feeling out of my room but by Mazatlan, I knew that I could not do those last two days at sea, researched the contract, confirmed with the ship that I could depart in PV and that is what I did. I booked a hotel in PV, new flights up to my final vacation destination and set the wheels in motion. Note--if one chooses to go this option, expect a change in attitude from the front desk staff from sweet and polite to rather blunt. Further, when I first inquired as to being allowed to stay on-board until noon I was told no problem but by 7pm on the last night, a letter arrived to my room informing me that at 7:45 am the following morning I must report to the Immigration officers on-board with my luggage (normal procedure) but I had to depart the ship immediately after---there went the welcome. Too add insult to injury, they did not even communicate my departure with the security officers on Deck A so after I cleared the Mexican Customs on board, the security staff still pulled me to one side to "verify" that I was allowed to leave. I had a few choice words for them on that topic. The ports I have been to before---San Diego, to begin is a beautiful city and I will go there again. The first sea day, and on Western based cruises this is to be expected, it was freezing and wet! Cabos uses tenders so be prepared for a bit of a line-up to get on one unless you have an excursion. Coming back close to noon a very intoxicated woman sat next to me and practically passed out on my shoulder going back to the ship--I had to wonder how much she drank so early in the morning?! Mazatlan, though it did not have a tendering system because it was docked at a cargo port, meant that one still had to wait for little shuttle trolleys to take passengers from the ship to the cruise building. The town itself was lovely and I took the local bus over to the hotel zone to find a Starbucks to get a coffee and good wireless. The malecon in Mazatlan is miles long and very scenic--loved it. PV--I have been there many times on land vacations and though the ship docks close to the hotel zone and 7 peso bus ride can take anyone into the historic part in about 20 mins for each direction. Overall, I would use Holland America again, especially one of the past three ships I enjoyed, but the lesson I learned this time, even after all my cruises is that any future cruise I take, I have to research the ship more closely, in particular--the date it was built and when it was refurbished! I bought a drink package for just over $500. On our seven day cruise, I had no more than 8 drinks (I started counting). The reason for not having more is because each drink took an average of a half hour to get to me. I believe they do this because they know the sooner you get your beverage, the sooner you may order a second one. It's a scam and I feel I was robbed. I'm not a crazy drunk but I do like a drink at lunch and with dinner while on holidays. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get a drink. Don't bother wasting the money. Our second problem was the fact that there was no coffee maker in the room. We spent the extra money for a balcony with the vision of waking up early to watch the sunrise while sipping our coffee. We had to get up, get dressed, walk to the nearest café just to get a morning coffee! Not good. We are a young couple. Princess had a chance to secure us as long term guests but that won't happen as we were deprived of what we consider basic amenities. There are plenty of daily activites but watch out, the majority of the activities have a heavy sales pitch attached to them. i.e. how to look 10 years younger (buy pills and lotions), how to start exercising (pay huge fees for on ship trainers), and the list goes on.... The fitness room was one of the main reasons we chose this ship. We work out everyday. While I was doing floor work on a huge spacious floor, I was asked to leave the space because there was either a yoga class or a spin class about to start. There was plenty of room to run the class without having to ask me to stop my workout. The trainers became rude to me after I told them I wouldn't move. They told me the guests participating in the classes were paid customers. I am a paid customer!!!!! It was awful. I eventually said they could have to have security move me. Only then did they digress. I won't cruise with Princess again. Read Less
