Chose this ship because we had a great experience 8 years ago on their cruise to Alaska. This was frankly very disappointing. Unlike the previous cruise most everything besides meals is extra. I mean like diet cokes , even WATER! They try to up sell you on everything you do. Even Bingo.. They charged $2.50 for a pen! Outrageous. Then, in the gym, 3 out of 5 bikes worked. Stuff was not working. Also, more maddening than anything.. The wifi was useless. It barely worked and they charged 128 for premium! It was dial up speeds if any. Will never do this again with them. Excursions were ok.. Standard stuff. Room lighting was abysmal.. Couldn't read very well and again wifi non existant. 5 TV channels.. Wow. Pool and deck are fine, food lines very slow. No self service anymore probably due to health risks.. Dining room is again an upsell.. Lobsters 20 extra with no meat on them. Would rather eat dinner in Lido deck. The whole thing was very nickel and dime.. Not what I was thinking. Read Less

We stayed at the Double Tree at San Pedro prior to boarding. Very nice hotel and they provide free parking during he duration of your cruise. We chose this cruise after a 6 year absence from cruising. In the past we have had primarily cruised with Princess (over a dozen times). The Princess line appears to have lost it’s luster over the years. Both the ship (Ruby Princess) and the crew appear tired. The level of customer service has significantly dropped. The fine extra touches of the past have disappeared and the staff appears often short with the guests. Our cabin steward kept our room clean, but nothing notable. The decrease in service is most likely a combination of a Princess management shortfall and a cut back in service crew. They are caught up in doing the same thing everyday and no longer look at innovation or how to improve the guests experience. The Main dining was ok, but server attitude was lacking. Horizon Buffet food was ok but finding a table, unless you bus it yourself, was challenging. The deck foodservice was good and the street tacos at the Salty Dog Grill were very good. Speciality dining food quality (Share and Salty Dog) were outstanding BUT the service was very slow. We did not travel with kids, but there were plenty on the cruise and they seemed to enjoy the cruise. Most adults could not use the hot tubs as they were usually filled with 8 to 10 year olds. After sailing multiple times with Norwegian, we thought we would "Step Up" and sail with Princess. What a mistake.... worst food and poorest selection for buffet for 1st five days and then selection got minimally better but quality remained poor. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner buffets consistantly poor quality, bad service, sad faced employes. Paid for 2 nights in Specialty Restaurant "Crown Grill" steakhouse, mediocre food, BAD service. No better in dining rooms, BAD service mediocre food, poor selection. many public Restrooms out of service entire cruise. Nice balcony Cabin, deck 10 C405 and excellent room steward "David Kurniawan". Very organized and well run boarding and disembarkation. Lacking any quality entertainment, shows etc. Truly SAD. Clean well run Casino, however I would have liked a "real dealer" and real cards while playing poker instead of the big shiny glass computer screen. We are really NOW looking forward To our next Norwegian "Fun" Cruise. We did not appreciate Norwegian until sailing on the Ruby Princess Read Less

To have a great Vacation. But the food way below good. We only had one Captains dinner. I ask about the 2nd dinner, and was told that xmas dinner was the 2nd. We want to the Steakhouse, and ordered Surf and Turf. But the food was cold and bunt. The soup was watered down. The best meal was the hot dogs from dell at the aft of the ship. The wait staff in the MDR was slow and not very helpful. Half the time our food was cold, or not what we ordered. The Casino was full of smoke, and very poor staff. We ask for help from the Host, Waited over 1 hour for help. We ask for a drink, and had to wait again for that. When we got to are cabin the first day, we ask for ice and two more towels. We got the ice on Monday and the towels on Tuesday afternoon. Read Less

We have cruised with Royal Caribbean and Disney before and we had very good time. This X'mas we choose NCL cruise and it was the worst experience I have so far. This ship is pretty old. Many dinning options are extra cost. Food was no good and service was so bad. Based on the daily information showed O'Sheehans lunch open @11:30 my family went and the lady told us they need to clean up and won't open until @12:30 with rude attitude. After more than one hour waiting we finally got seats and the service was very slow. Entertainment was very poor. All entertainment activities closed at 10pm. They even lock-downed shuffleboard and ping pong table. They didn't offer much things to do on the cruise. There was some good thought. House keeping was good. They clean our cabin several times per day and always keep it clean. The two stars are for house keeping. Read Less

I will write a free association ramble, sorry if I repeat myself. The food was very disappointing in all areas. The public dining rooms as well as the specialty restaurants. I had 3 very good surprising meals. Moderno, Bistro and one dish served one day during lunch in the garden cafe. But overall the food really was very disappointing. Terrible onion soup even in Cagney's. The mac and cheese was not cheesy at all. I can go on and on but in the end given how much you folks say how NCL is all about the fantastic food and in reality the food was pretty bad overall. Our room cabin was 5650 for DEC 21st 2018 cruise. The placement of the bed was right next to the fold down bed and myself at first kept on banging my head on the fold down bed. After the 3rd time I changed sides with my wife and she also banged her head 3+ times. What a bad design of the room. The room was smaller then even the smallest inside cabins of the other cruise lines we have been on. The worst part of the room was that it was under the kitchen and almost throughout the entire night I could hear some kind of very loud compressor going, items being dropped on the floor, barrels or something very large being rolled around over our heads.. who knows but the noise was at times loud enough to wake us up and keep us from sleeping a few hours each night. The large auditorium where you have the shows.. who ever installed ALL the seats have put them at a weird angle such that when your sitting on them it feels like your going to slide down them onto the floor. Of course you wont because there was no legroom so one is wedged in pretty tightly.. So yea a very uncomfortable auditorium.. Best seats in the house was the handicapped seats and they went fast. By the way the entertainment was really great. Tim the comedian was funny as all heck. Your staff from the captain down to the folks cleaning the room I can see work really hard. Unfortunately they cannot compensate for the physical issues of an older cruise ship. Of course the food can be improved upon. Portion sizes were small at best. Sometimes salads came with barely any salad in them and the main course was dished out like one was in prison. Bottom line it was very clear they were doing their very best to keep their food cost under control. So such thing as an american sized serving.. of course one can always order more food.. still it shows they want to save money not only on serving size but in quality of the food as well. OMG the french fries were the absolute worse in both the main dining hall and up stairs in the pool area grill. I am not sure how those french fries were made but really they tasted like eating dried out card board.. Why even make the effort only to put out such a bad product. I know its all about saving money!!! Overall NCL at this time would be that last cruise liner I would book a cruise on in the future. The poor layout of the room. No chairs in the room, only a makeup stool, really?? Banging our head on the fold down bed because there is no room to climb out of the bed on that side. A bathroom with sharp edges where one could be hurt if they slipped or the boat rocked to hard. The food was cheap, and it was evident of the cost savings. No Smoked salmon / LOX for bagels just a smoked salmon/cream cheese mix. Sauces on all dishes were extremely light, just the bare minimum even in the specialty restaurants... on and on this went during the whole cruise... And the noise, electronic throbbing/pulsing of some type all night long in our cabin from the kitchen above.. anyway, we paid about $1k per person for the trip, another $240 total for the specialty restaurants which really were bad except for the french and brazilian, paid about $400 for massages which my wife loved, excellent message staff. Another $1k to travel. So we paid at least $4k all in all for just a below average cruise. My expectations were much higher after all the boasting you folks did about both the ship and the food. This ship and the food really was in the minor league and truly not ready for prime time.. Nice effort but not in the same league as Celebrity or even Princess for that matter. You asked and now you know. Value for money? I won't be coming back. Read Less

We chose this cruise on NCL Star to Mexican Riviera, a repeat trip from a Carnival line 10 years ago. We are frequent (11) cruisers, and this was by far our WORST SHIP experience. We were assigned a rooms in the front of the ship, 8003 and 8005. We were not able to choose rooms when booking. The "Normal" noise level in the room was THUNDEROUS. There was no sleeping. We were told this was normal due to (depending on who you talked to) the anchor or normal noise due to the waves at the bow. If you were able to sleep for a few moments you were woken by 110 decibles and trembling rooms - enough for things to fly off the shelves. How NCL can put people in staterooms with this "normal" noise level is an atrocity. It's a statement to their desire to make money over passenger comfort that these rooms are used for paying clients. This was evident in several areas, such as "entertainment" being basically commercials such as "Better Body Without Botox" and "Non-surgical Face Lifts," etc. over what is traditional entertainment, hard sells in the gift shops, etc. Communication is poor, such as what movies are playing, where to disembark, time to be back on the ship, ship time (changes 4 times in 7 days and no clocks are available.) IF you decide to book on NCL, be forwarned that you must reserve your dinning accomodations prior to boarding or you will be left with only O'Shannah's with a very limited menu that doesn't change, the buffet, or a 90 minute wait for "MAYBE you get in." We did enjoy the shows and felt that the room steward and buffet staff were wonderful. Read Less

Service of crew members was excellent. Reception at the front desk was some of the friendliest and most helpful that we have ever experienced, regardless of the issue discussed. For some reason, Norwegian seems to be promoting drink packages and I believe they are cutting their budget for food ingredients to pay for them! Soups and sauces were watered down, meat cuts tough, selections limited. I do not know if this is fleet wide, but at this time I would not recommend the Star if you are looking for fine cuisine. Many other guests seemed to agree and it became a topic of discussion that we did not originate. We heard enough complaints about the "specialty restaurants" that we did not bother to go. The shore excursions were about as expected, with competitive pricing: there were too many "shopping opportunities" for us, but that is always a matter of individual preference. Read Less

We were on the Eurodam 1 1/2 yrs ago with an Itinerary to Alaska which hooked us on cruising with HAL. It was the best cruise experience we've had having over 30 cruises under our belt so we assumed this trip would be no different BOY were we wrong. The 180 degree turn of experience leads me to believe that these weren't minor changes ….this is how the current and future HAL experiences will look like due to cost cutting to more closely compete with their sister company Carnival. Entertainment The HAL entertainment and activities were almost non existent there was only 1 night that HAL dancers perfomed a dance act that was on another cruise we took with them in May. On other cruises with 3 sea day you would have a minimum of two possibly three performances. The other nights, they showed a movie offered in the room that has been out for six months. The other nights there was a second rate commedian and magician, the last night was a review. Some other experiences: Very little interaction or communication from cruise director to let us know what was going on Americas test kitchen was offered only one day on a itinerary with 3 sea days The wait staff show is gone... were told they didnt want to pay staff extra for the show The relationship with Park West Galleries no longer exist as a result no more art auctions at sea Jewelry and Watch auction featured 1 (yes) one watch with a reserve of $500, I guess they didnt want to have a real watch auction The Cha Cha Class offered was so overcrowded there was no room to move, I surmise the turnout was due to lack of other activities. If you bought the elite drink package you most likey would have been dissappointed, many of the higher end wines and whiskeys were not in stock Lastly it really burns me when I see the cruise director drinking wine for a couple of hours in one of the lounges we were in when there was such a lack of activities going on In all the quality of entertainment was far below ANY cruise we have been on. Food Food quality was decent but another nod to cost cutting their seafood quality was very poor. One night Halibut was served which should be a flaky white fish, instead what we got was a rubbery piece of fish. After sending it back 3 times i gave up understanding it was not the prep it was the quality of the fish, other passengers around us had the same experieince. Same thing with salamon, and the shrimp cocktail were noticibly smaller and less firm. The burger joint on the pool deck took 35 minutes to get a burger and fries and when we recieved them the burger was burnt to a crisp. Other than that beef and lamb products were prepared to HAL typical high standards. Processes Our day in Cabo required a tender to shore. By far it was the most disorganized tender i have ever experienced over 30 yrs of cruising. How the tender #'s were allocated, the loading of the tender and return was highly inefficent. Having previously tendered with HAL without incident i can only surmise that they did not put down enough tenders (maybe because of fuel) to handle this process efficently. The lido cafe was also very inefficent in part due to staff not having a sense of urgency to serve, in part due to inefficent station setup and in part due to line ctters, a really simple solution his would have been to have line barrier to prevent cutting ahead... which wouldnt have been an issue if the lines were moving efficiently. Well, it's good to be home, If HAL wants to win our business back feel free to contact me. Otherwise the goal of becoming a 5 star mariner is dead. Read Less

I took my best friend on this cruise because it was out of my home port and it was her first cruise. I have crushed many times with NCL & Celebrity and only once prior on Holland America to Alaska over 20 years ago. Talk about dissatisfaction with food, service, and customer service! Our cabin stewards Adit and Hamit were wonderful, as was Saldit in the Lido Buffet in the mornings. Other than that, we were dismissed, food was always cold, I specifically requested vegetarian selections and was told I needed to pre-order 24 hrs in advance. (It was the same menu throughout the cruise.) once I brought to the attention of management, I was followed, harrrased, and overall a very poor experience. Hopefully my friend enjoyed her first cruise, as I tried to let her know that this was an anomaly to my past cruising experiences. I wasn’t the only person who was not happy with the food. The three days in port were spent finding decent food. The tender experience in Cabo was laughable! The line to obtain tender tickets/times was beyond chaotic and frustrating. You get what you pay for using Vacations To Go as well. Once final payment was made, it was virtually impossible to get the representative to return a phone call or email. Read Less

This was our eighth cruise with Princess and last time we cruised with Princess was in 2014 on Grand Princess to Mexico. Ship has tired look and needs major update. Embarkation went very smoothly. Getting off was quick especially at customs. Entertainment was very good. Staff was very friendly and helpful with the exception of one night in main dining room when we went at 8:45 pm and staff hurried us through our meal. Buffet food was marginal and the hot food was warm not hot. I saw mashed potatoes being served that was so watery but put out for serving. Main dining room food was uninspiring. Lobster tails being served were so small as compared to other Princess cruises. Yes I know I could get more but that is not the point. Point being Princess has cut back on quality of food. This was our first time sailing out of San Francisco and will be our last. Many cruisers were rude but didn't know they were being rude. Different vibe of passengers cruising out of SF as compared to ports in Fort Lauderdale, Seattle, LA, Puerto Rico, Miami and Vancouver BC Will we cruise with Princess again? Questionable at this time. Read Less

We did not have our room cleaned the entire trip due to not trusting the housekeeping staff. Unfortunately my husband left his ring on the bathroom shelf. We made a lost report and they have told us three times they could find it. There is no way housekeeping could have missed it. It’s unfortunate they hire liars and thieves to clean your room. I am very disappointed in the staff. The food was average and the 24hour pizza tastes like frozen pizza. The drinks were over priced and weak for the value. The entertainment was average and boring. The comedians they hired was the best part of the cruise. We watched all of the shows they provided. The water slides they had were freezing cold so no one was on them. We had one meal that we paid for at the steak house Crown Grill. Food was excellent and service as well but it cost an additional $80.00 . They charge for self serve laundry machines, air conditioning didn’t work in our cabin. They charge for water bottles in your room and for cokes to be delivered to your state room as well. The portions in the dining room for the “included”meals we so ridiculously small, your truly needed to order 5 dinners to equal one regular dinner. The staff is clearly overworked and under paid. Nice Ports, Clean pretty ship. The problems no jogging track, closing down the deck that wrapped around the entire ship, food sub-par, no consistent music, and no sports bar. Could be so much more but the trip itself seemed so boring. The cigar room had not music and neither did the Casino. I like to sit at the while husband gambles but it was so dull I hated sitting there. The bar staff are great but the drink ticket does not offer much. At least on Carnival the dollar limit for drinks is much higher than $12. The quick food was awful as well as the room service. It took 20 minutes for them to answer the phone and the food was cold and terrible. The dinning room was decent but they push the pay food so much, I think that is why the dinning is so tasteless. Thankfully there was the best food at the international cafe. The staff and food there was terrific. A life savor. Sadly will not be back. Read Less

The Cruise Director and her staf did a good job. The dining was a big disappointment. The food was ok, but not was I was expecting. You had to wait in long lines for a burger, pizza, ice cream or anything at the International Cafe. We got lost repeatedly as they don't have any wayfinding system like Royal Caribbean. To get to our dining room, we had to goup to ths 7th floor and then down to the 6th floor. I found it odd and annoying. We got locked out of our room twice on a 5 night cruise. Never going back--even if free So there are good things about this cruise. 1. SOME of the staff were very nice. The guy who cleaned our room was amazing-super friendly and always greeted us with a smile. The girls working the excursions. . BUT we had a few VERY BAD THINGS. 1. The FOOD WAS HORRIBLE across the board. It was like bad, cheap mall food and there was hardly any available. The food at dinner was a little better, but two nights, I didn't even eat because it was so yucky. Cold, soggy, smelled "off", and it was obvious that it was premade. In the Mardi Gras room, I tried to eat there twice with no luck. Bad service--one guy got really mad that I didn't want coffee and the next day the guy kept bringing me the wrong food. They tried hard, but it was bad. Room service was lackluster and they charged for everything. 2. There wasn't much to do on the ship except drink and since so much of the ship was filled with smokers, it was bad. 3. They didn't explain anything to us and when we asked we got yelled at. We were very confused much of the time (it was our first cruise)*** come back to this. 4. Excursions were very expensive and they were super unorganized--getting off the ship etc. It was chaotic. 5. The "safety" thing was just the cruise director taking roll and telling us what shows were coming up. And he mentioned that kids had armbands. We would have been screwed had anything happened. 6. Our stateroom was FREEZING. I had on three shirts, a sweatshirt, two pairs of thick socks, a hat, gloves and a scarf and got under the covers. There was no way to warm up. The shower was lukewarm. So we FROZE. It was warmer on the deck in the rain and 50 degrees. I caught a really bad cold and was coughing. It was so uncomfortable. When I asked the man who cleaned our room he said that was how it was. It was like camping, outside, in the winter. This was probably the thing that was the hardest to deal with. 7. The internet for $59 was super slow and you couldn't even access the app without it. Only one person can be on it. 8. The hallway and room smelled like rotting feces at all times. (E78) 9. We were by the atrium where they had parties and loud music and games from early morning til midnight or later. THE WORST WAS this one lady at the guest services. We asked her how to disembark on day three--we thought we should know. She started immediately yelling at us to "turn on the tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" when I explained that on the Carnival TV channel there was only ads and a cartoon explaining how to put on a life jacket she got more angry. She told us to TURN ON THE TV!!!! IT WAS ON THERE. Then I suggested that the rooms should have a book or something with information like hotels do---she got upset again. She demanded to know why we were confused. I said that for example we had no idea where to eat or anything and that's when she lost her mind. She literally said, "JESUS CHRIST!!!" and then called me a B**ch Then put her hand up and refused to answer any questions. We were then AFRAID to ask anyone anything. I was in tears at that point because I hadn't eaten all day (due to the lack of food choices) and just wanted an explanation of what time we could leave on Friday morning. There was no need to be nasty. I even explained that it was our first cruise. I left in tears. I asked a man in the hallway to see a manager and he told me that there was no such thing on Carnival cruises and that guest services were the boss. I explained what happened and he said that was up to them how to treat people. Then I said, "so you could verbally abuse me and no one would do anything, not even the captain?" He confirmed. I was crying. I went outside to sit on deck nine to calm down, because there was nothing we could do to get help. I got locked outside for 45 minutes. :( I don't know if I will get a lawyer because of he behavior, but honestly verbally abusing guests is UNCALLED FOR. Also she NEVER told us how to do anything. I went down there at 3 am and asked someone else. To end on a good note, the guys in the dining hall were amazing. Once we figured out where to go and went there every night at 8:15, they went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. Sadly this was our honeymoon and because the stateroom smelling like poop, being about 50 degrees, and being called names and cursed out. It ruined it for us. I am drafting a letter---the old fashioned way and mailing it to them. I hope they refund at least half or it, but even if they do, we aren't going back. It was really, really, really bad. PROS: some of the staff, and the people we met, the comedy shows were good, the entertainment shows were good. CONS: Food, some of the staff, freezing & stinky rooms, no hot water in shower, general confusiong, loud parties outside our room. Read Less

I'm a Platinum on Princess and I will have to say that this was one of the worst if not the worst Princess cruise that I have been on....I could not believe that Princess would even have the Ruby located in Los Angeles the entertainment capital of the world. First off when I got on the ship I went to the Lido and asked where I can use my coffee card which iis now on my sign and sail. I was told by a rude person to let her see my card. I gave it to her and she told me to go to the Intl Cafe which I did, After getting my coffee I asked the next day how many coffee where left on the card. I was told 30...what...they laughed...I then realized that this staff member put another coffee 15 coffees on my card and went to the purer. When I first got my coffee they did not put the lid on all the way and it split all over my new shirt. They said they would clean it at no charged and when it returned to my cabin it said comp and no change.. When I looked at my bill a few days later they had billed me twice for the cleaning. When you get on the ship there are posters in the stairwells and Atrium for Sabitinis Restaurant....yes the same one Princess advertises all over the media and Vlogs....I called up to make dinner reservations only to discover that there was no Sabitini's restaurant on the Ruby nor an Alfredos....as a matter of fact there was no ethnic venues at all. There were a few Pay restaurants and decided to try the Crown Grill....I had to pay an extra $10 to get a steak that looked and tasted like it was laying around for a day or two...and a couple of days later I got the same thing in the main dinning room without having to pay $40. I got an Ice Cream at the Intl Coffee venue and had to pay for it....it was included on the old coffee cards...and to top it off I had to pay a gratuity for it....The food was mediocre at best....not at all what I've had or expected from the past...The lido buffet was scaled down with the same thing everyday. Carnival even had better food then the Ruby...The excursions were something else....In Cabo we paid for a two ad half hour excursion which turned into a four and a half hour excursion that was nothing more then a time share.condo sales presentation for Los Cabo where there is a mile of unsold time shares and condos...we even had to pay for our own lunch for a captive audience time share promotion...In Pueta Vill it was raining heavily and when we got on the bus it was leaking everywhere even the lights...we were very concerned....They switched buses about 15 minutes into the excursion and it was not any better,,,,the women were crying and the men had to take off their coats and put them over their wives....we told the tour operator to take us back to the ship and he would not...He said it was part of the adventure and that he would take us to somewhere dry....It turned out to be a jewelry store that we had to walk through 4 inches of rain to get there....the same with the other places like a church....we had to walk through pouring rain and 3-4 inches of rain because it was part of the adventure...when we finally got back to thew ship we all went in mass to guest services...and we were not alone as others from similar excursions were there as well to demand our money back....The ship was rocking and rolling for two days on our way back so most people just stayed in their rooms as the ship did not feel like it had its stabilizers out.....I could go on but the only thing I will say is that it was not the Princess of before...Also as far as I'm concerned Princess should immediately send the Ruby to Asia and bring the Majestic Princess to Los Angeles.... The instant mashed potatoes had the consistency of applesauce. Meats were either well over-cooked or undercooked. The fried chicken was so overcooked it was almost black and hard and stringy. They ran out of sprouts for salads by the third day. The fruit was often mushy and overripe. Where they served burgers we found them and the fries were served close to room temperature as was the mayonnaise which was discolored on top and may have been the cause of my wife's diarrhea, vomiting, and upset stomach that ruined the last two days of the trip for us. The evening shows were well below the standard we came to expect on our previous cruise. However, the comedy shows were good except we missed the last two days since my wife was not feeling well. Our shore excursions at the first two ports were well worth the cost. Due to heavy rain, we were allowed to cancel the excursion at the last port of call. Read Less

My husband and I booked a cruise on the Ruby Princess to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We booked a suite R402. The room was lovely and spacious, although it could have been refurbished a little because of the wear and tear, but we were still pleased. We arrived on the ship in Los Angeles and proceeded to purchase the all inclusive beverage package. We then went to the buffet. We went back to our room to freshen up and enjoyed the evening in the casino. The following day we celebrated our anniversary and had purchased a dinner for 2 at the Crown Grill. We had also been notified that our travel agency purchased a meal for the 2 of us at the same location. We were thrilled, then our meal arrived. I ordered a filet, medium rare. The filet was dry and overcooked. I did not say anything because I did not want to spoil the evening. We decided to give the Crown Grill another try the next evening. I ordered the rib eye steak.....same condition as the night before. By that time we decided we would not dine in that location for the rest of our cruise. We met many people while celebrating and exchanged some very interesting stories. On the 3rd evening we dined at Di Vinces'. My meal was pleasant, but my husband ordered the surf and turf that was listed on the menu under the Crown Grill. His steak was prepared as ordered, but the lobster tails were burnt. When we retired for the evening, we had reported that the drain in our shower was clogged to our room steward. The next afternoon the room steward had inquired if our drain was clear and I informed him it was not. I reported it myself to guest services. The drain was cleared and the ship offered us a credit for our inconvenience which we accepted. We decided to try the buffet. It appeared that the selection of food was the same, but the chefs had just switched the kinds of pastas but not the sauces. We heard numerous people around us complaining of the selection as well. One evening I requested that my husband go to deck 5 to select a dessert for me. He came back to the room empty handed and said that there were 3 employees behind the counter chatting away while my husband and a few others were waiting to be served. My husband decided not to wait until the employees finished their personal conversations and came back up to our room. I spent a lot of time at the Roulette table and did quite well at the end of the cruise. There was an Asian female bartender working there on one of the nights and she was not very friendly or pleasant. I feel that when people book a cruise, they look forward to having a relaxing time and be treated with respect. Maybe she was having a bad day or perhaps, did not like her job, but whatever the reason, she had to be trained on basic customer service. I have cruised a total of 10 times, six with the Princess and my experience was not what I had expected. We ran into some bad weather going home and the ride was pretty bumpy. I realize that the cruise line does not have control of the weather, but they do have control over the other issues I have mentioned. In the past I have always raved to anyone who wanted to know what cruising was like, unfortunately my 40th wedding anniversary cruise will not be one that I intend to rave about. Read Less

Last year I took a 3 day cruise with Carnival Victory. I’d have to say I was disappointed this year with Carnival Inspiration as I compare it to last year’s cruise because: The ship needs updating badly, there were not enough adult activities during the day, in the adult only deck section (which is extremely hard to find)- there was no bar, guest services was unfriendly along with several bartenders, the food was subpar in the buffet area, there were no areas where food was offered during non-meal times (which Carnival Victory had and I hear a lot of other ships do too), the safety check in Muster C was a waste of time because you couldn’t see the person on stage demonstrating or hear the overhead announcement for safety instructions, you also couldn’t hear the overhead announcements while in the cabins so if you’re not in the hallway or a common area- you don’t know what they’re trying to tell you. I would say Orlando (cruise director) and Alvin (Orlando’s assistant) did a PHENOMINAL job with entertainment. I wish they hosted more activities during the day for adults though, because there were hour stents when there was nothing to do but sit at a bar or on a deck (it was a bit cool, so we barely used the deck). Jodi (stand up comedian) was GREAT and had me laughing so hard that I cried. Mon (our housekeeper) was OUTSTANDING. Mon had great customer service and attended to our request quickly. I was also disappointed there was not a deal on he pictures. Not even the day we left the ship. There were just so many times that I didn’t feel there was adequate customer service. Next year, I’m not sure I would give Carnival another try because I hear so many great reviews about Royal Caribbean. I would like to express how great of a time I had during the horseback riding excursion in Ensanada. Jose was our guide and he did an AWESOME job. All the men at the horseback riding place were personable, made sure we were safe during the ride through the mountains and provided us an overall meaningful experience. Read Less

My family just came back from a seven day cruise to Mexico on Ruby Princess. I should have listened to the comments on food from people cruising on this ship recently. We dined in one of the main dining rooms every night, hoping the food would get better, but got disappointed again and again. They have good ingredients but bad cooking, especially with seafood and steak. Lunch buffet was as bad as the dinner compare to the other princess cruises I have been on, very few varieties of food and pretty much the same every day. Pizza place and Salty Dog were good. Entertainments and activities were good. Room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable. Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth and fast. Service in both dining room and lunch buffet were good, waiters always attentive, friendly. Room service was always there for things we needed for our room. Read Less

We really had higher expectations from this cruise..we have done 3 cruises on different ships before this and had way better experiences.. Pros: -nice beds -,the grille, -walk in style closet -,2 days when kids staff hosted kids disco and family fair The event coordinator for the dance parties was real nice Service from room stewards, chefs and servers on Lido was good..friendly and always ready to help -Sous chef on Lido was helpful and accommodating.. -Movies on demand in the room were good Cons: -showers didn't have a door only a curtain. -Most of the time public bathrooms were "under maintenance " -Not enough entertainment for kids and also no musicals or shows for adults -Even the kids center was not that exciting.. didnt find the staff engaging with kids through activities..more like free play.. -didnt even have a separate pool area for kids -no theme nights for food...same grub almost every night, not that many veggie options -They didnt have international food stations..on all the other cruises we have been on ..there was a separate Asian, south east asian,Mexican, etc food station -Deck parties were pretty bare..and no freebies though the event coordinator was really good and tried hard to engage all who were there -mini golf was more like a small lawn -The servers in Da Vinci had an attitude problem..did not feel good vibes..seemed exasperated..also food was terribly disappointing..only redeeming feature was the dessert. -We requested for our twin beds to be joined together but were told its a safety issue..with bunk beds open they could not help us.But other cruise ships obliged us happily. -Not that many free classes.. Overall, not a very kid friendly cruise.. Sad to say,we wont be cruising with this line any time soon! Read Less

My wife and I took the seven day Mexico cruise out of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we were not particularly impressed by the Splendor. Having cruised with Carnival many times, we were expecting better food. But there was no Guy Fieri hamburger joint on this ship, and the Splendor's poolside hamburgers were meh. The pizza served at the 24 hour Pizza Pirate was so so. In particular, the crust was crummy. On other Carnival ships, you can see that the dough is freshly made and the pizza guys are spinning the pie crusts right in front of you. Not on the Splendor, where I could see the crust was premade. Even the Indian buffet open for lunch was not as good as on other Carnival ships. As far as entertainment, the Splendor was pretty much like other Carnival ships. But the trivia was poor. Some of the folks hosting the trivia seemed uninterested, and in the past there have been varied prizes, but on the Splendor only the “ship on a stick.” Jeez, how many of those can you take home with you. My wife and I will be steering clear of the Splendor from now on. Read Less

Chose this cruise as a 10 day out of San Francisco. Reason for low score is Grand Princess allows smoking in Casino which perimates throughout atrium and smoking on promenade walking deck. It lacks a Thermal Suite and saunas are outside. Buffet now closes between meal times and at 11pm not midnight anymore. Full suites still lack nice balcony furniture. Staff and food was exceptional. Embarkation was awful as we had a porter who threatened our luggage as we did not tip enough, wanted more, we reported it and luggage showed up fine. The movies on MUTs were very good. Buffet was great. Sanctuary staff sold our chairs, purchased for duration of cruise to people who wanted sea days, that was a nightmare. Princess shore ex in Manzanillo was good, shopping to flea market with time to walk on beach. Itinerary and many sea days made for a nice cruise. Read Less

We were so excited for this cruise. A number of people had told us that Princess had great service and fantastic food. We were excited for SHARE and other specialty restaurants. I anticipated days full of exercise classes and crafts, and nights of luxurious dinners and dancing the night away. Alas, it didn't live up to expectations. Embarkation took forever - just a ton of waiting and standing around in a too crowded space. Ship activities were a disappointment - most were based around selling us things; a raffle in a jewelry store is not exactly what I had in mind. There were very few exercise classes, and the ones they did have came with a hefty fee - TRX was $20 per session. It turned out, that while we had anticipated that most things on the cruise other than booze would be included, almost everything came at an extra charge. Even room service pizza came with a fee. Food was another area of disappointment. In the dining rooms, servers were not trained properly in how to serve, resulting in an awkward and clunky experience. Room service had tons of rules - you could only get iced tea in an 8 ounce glass, nothing larger or a pitcher (though you could get a carafe of coffee). The food itself was mediocre - the quality was not at all what I expected. Very little use of spices, and traditional ethic dishes such as lamb shawarma in the dining room were laughable parodies of the real thing. But specialty dining was even worse. Salty Dog featured a surly hostess and staff who didn't know the menu at all. The Ernesto burger, which supposedly came with kimchi and pork belly, was actually topped with sad wilted cabbage and undercooked bacon. But SHARE took the prize for a bad dining experience. Curtis Stone should be ashamed that this place is attached to his name. The space was really lovely, very modern and open. But the food was truly terrible. The burrata was inedible, and my salad course was literally grocery store bagged salad mix spilled sloppily into a bowl (greens were falling out one side of the bowl). While the scallops were nothing to write home about, they were the highlight of the meal, as they were followed by an unevenly cooked steak that was so lacking in flavor I did a double take when I bit into it. The dessert course featured ice cream so poorly prepared and stored that it was full of ice - vanilla ice cream shouldn't crunch. So that too was left uneaten. I'm still frustrated that we paid $58 to eat there. On the ship, everywhere we turned there was someone trying to sell us something. Most days, the Piazza looked like a swap meet with tables of knockoff jewelry and t-shirts in every hall. And that continued when we left the ship - in Cabo and Mazatlan you were stopped every few moments by someone wanting to sell you cigars or crafts. We didn't notice the same in Puerta Vallarta, as we did an all day excursion that left yards from where the ship was docked. We did really enjoy our excursions. In Cabo, we took a luxury sunset sail on a gorgeous 50 foot boat, complete with a light meal and drinks. And in PV, we did the Sea Safari, a 7 hour adventure with a speedboat, horseback riding, swimming in a waterfall, snorkeling, and a barbecue on a private beach. Those were the moments we wished comprised the whole trip. Disembarkation was a mess - too many people not knowing where to go, and the groups were too big to fit in the designated spaces. It really ended the cruise on a sour note, although customs and immigration once we left the ship was a smooth and easy process. We would definitely not go on this, or probably any Princess cruise ever again. Read Less
