I had never been on a cruise before and a friend of mine higher recommended the Empress of the Sea. I was going to a wedding in Miami so decided to make a trip out of it and go on a 5 day cruise beforehand. The Empress of the Sea is a small cruise ship so if you hit bad weather - prepare to rock/roll and be sea sick! We had bad weather for ALL 5 days. The boat rocked so much it was impossible to sleep and everyone was sea sick - even the staff! I attempted to get a massage to relieve my massive headache due to the rocking and the masseuse had to leave in the middle of my treatment to throw up. Everyone was throwing up. Crew were hosing down the decks due to all of the vomit. Staff was down due to being sea sick so room service was 30 minutes late. I had to get room service 2 days because I was too sick to leave my cabin. All people I spoke with said it was the WORST cruise they had ever been on. I met a couple when I was well enough to venture out and they mentioned it was their 30th cruise. They said it was so bad it made them never want to cruise again! The one good day was our stop on Cozumel. It was sunny and most importantly we had land. I had a great time in Cozumel and the people were lovely. I was dreading getting back on board and sure enough it started to rock and roll again leading everyone to be miserable and sea sick. Our only hope was we were going to Costa Maya the next day. Around 6 AM the Captain came on saying we would NOT be going to Costa Maya due to the waves and instead of going to another port we would spend 48 hours at sea. Everyone was so upset that we were not going to another nearby port or going back to Miami early. Everyone said they would rather get back to Miami one day earlier vs. spending 48 hours at sea being sick on a rocking boat. There was also nothing to do. The pool was drained due to the waves, rock climbing wall was down and no one in our group wanted to drink because we felt so sick. We are in our 30's so enjoy adventure/fun. The only activities were Bingo, Trivia the casino and Karaoke. It was beyond awful. It was supposed to be a fun trip with my husband, sister and brother in law. It was our first cruise for all of us and Royal Caribbean did nothing to make up for the bad experience. I would never go on "vacation" on this boat again. Read Less

Poor: Housekeeping, Food, Service, Attitude. Old ship. This ship is very old if it would try to get a higher speed than 25 knots it would most likely fall apart, speaking of the ship and it's engine, you can feel the engine roaring and vibrating on every floor. If you want to know how it felt like sleeping, tell your Grandmother your dying, put your phone on vibrate and under your pillow and try to fall asleep as your Grandmother is calling you for the 567 time trying to find out if you're okay. That is exactly how it feels like sleeping on the Carnival Miracle. On the way back to LA (Aboard the ship) my kids woke up with bite marks most likely from bed bugs. I hope I didn't bring any home otherwise well have to get rid of every mattress we have and quarantine our home. Later during the day we went to look at the pictures at the photo department. One of the staff members accused us of trying to take a picture (with a phone) of the photos displayed on the display walls. I tried to explain to him it was misunderstanding but he chose to use profane language, instead of solving the issue. He then called his manager, who had a look at my photo gallery, and there happened to be no pictures of the photos from the display. The staff member understood that he was wrong and left without saying a word even when I asked him for his name twice. I made a complaint at Guest Services, and I explained my issue. She recorded everything and promised me I would receive the paperwork with the case number, early morning. I didn't receive anything. Read Less

We tried this cruise ship to go to Mexico. The food was HORRENDOUS in most of the restaurants, specially at Chin Chin restaurant. We much preferred the food in the Garden Cafe to the specialy restaurants. The Haven breakfast had limited food and not very tasty... you can have special order but it wasnt cooked well and took a very long time to cook. Food was terrible... best food was in Garden Cafe. The ship is Old and Small and Front Desk hotel manager is RUDE... the pool deck area is wayyyy too small compared to the other cruises we have taken. The White Party was *DEAD*. They held it at Spinnaker Lounge cuz it was raining in pool deck... when we arrived 30 minutes after the party started there were only @10 passengers on the dance floor...that was the extent of the White Night experience. Usually bartenders and servers would dress up like angels and entertain, dance throughout the night, make the party lively... that was absent here. Our room was not cleaned in detail when we first checked in and the blinds were broken and never fixed even after we complained about it. The chrome fixtures in the room were very dusty and there was hair/dirt in the outer edges of the bathrooms, carpet looked old, faded and dirty... detail cleaning was poor. The hammock, umbrellas, cushions, shades were not set up at all in our private deck. We kept complaining that they needed to set it up and they finally did it right on the 3rd port of call. We didnt purchase any shore excursions from the ship... we saved so much money by buying outside the ship and the Mexicans gave us half price discount. We had great excursions that we arranged with the locals on our own. We attended a free seminar on feet inserts and they managed to convince me to buy a pair for $200. They said there was a free 7 day trial. When I tried to return it before the 7 day period they refused to give my money back. I recall the guy told me they never had a return in their history of selling this... I can see why. We were happy with the entertainment... the New Yorker standup comedian was great, and the dancers were talented and wonderful. Read Less

To begin with, this wasnt our first cruise. We have done Disney -- 7, NCL - 4, Royal Car-- 4, Carnival - 2 prior to our first ever with HAL. Wanted to take time to list out the various issues we have had with HAL. Concierge / Lounge :- Maybe we expected a bit too much comparing it to Disney. W ehave sailed disney and being a suite occupant are entitled to concierge services and lounge. 1) HAL execs managing the lounge do not seem to have a handle on HOW THE THINGS need to get done. 2) The lounge door was at most times, open which resulted in many ppl from regular staterooms into the lounge or using the servies. Staff :- This is the first ever services company that I have seen where in the staff wasnt even motivated to Smile. With the exception of the Stateroom helper making our beds /cleaning, everyone seemed to have a frown on their faces. Not welcoming atall. Services industry requires customer service with a smile, here we never saw anyone greeting anyone. Food: Pathetic is the word. Apologies if this comes as strong but that is the fact. We were promised that there shall be Indian menu that we could choose from, Fisrt day we got green lentil and we did understand that second day onwards it shall be better, as is the case with our previous cruise experiences. We spke with the manager the first night and were promised better food next eve, needless to say we got the same lentil on Sunday and monday. Mon eve we spoke witht he chef Vishal and what told us threw us back. He told us that there is limited supply from HAL office and that they do not have any variety. We started eating out and avoiding dinners /meals on the ship and had to eat fries etc on Sea days. One incident was that there was A SOLID METAL WIRE in the meal and this was downplayed by the restaurant staff and even the manager. Entertainment: Rate it the lowest amongst all cruise lines. Even the game of Bingo seemed so dead viz-a-viz disney. Bottomline, I felt it to be a complete waste of money and more so the waste of valuable time that could have been well spent elsewhere. Especially in the festive season that we went thru. Read Less

This was the absolute worst vacation of my life. I have taken several cruises in the past and this was by far the worst ever. Room was filthy - had to call housekeeping 3 times to get it clean and point to the filth and ask for it to be cleaned. I finally just cleaned it myself. The food at the buffet was horrible, under seasoned and tasted frozen. They state they have several restaurants on this ship but in all actuality it is a huge buffet with different "stations". You have to pay $35 per person to go to the nicer dining which was pretty good. The pools are freezing with children running around with non existent supervision. The food in the main dining is terrible, lack luster and just plain awful. There are no activities for us night owls after 11pm at night, the dance club allows teens to stay in there all night, oh and there is only ONE dance club. I was thoroughly disappointed with this cruise line and will never ever consider going Carnival again. Read Less

I chose this cruise because a holiday cruise has been on my bucket list for year. I can honestly say this cruise was terrible from start to finish, I counted the days to get the heck off the boat. Our 9:30am check in was fast but then proceeded to wait for over 1.5 hours to board the ship. Communication and direction from the staff was non-existent not to mention a terrible language barrier. Once finally on board the buffet food looked and tasted like it had been sitting there for hours, everything was dry and luke warm. Moving on to beverage service, the types of "specialty drinks" are very limited and heaven forbid you ask a bartender to make you something specific. Not to mention every bars drinks taste watered down. During our cruise many deck board events were canceled due to the fact that we were moving way to fast to be on deck. According to a staff member we were running behind the whole cruise getting out of ports so the ship had to go faster to make up time. Communication onboard the ship is terribly lacking if you make any dining reservations make sure to take notes of your times as they do not provide any reminders or courtesy calls. But they have no problem keeping your money for the upgraded dining. In my opinion the upgraded dining is not work it, nothing more then just fancy cruise buffet food served on a fancy plate. Would i cruise on the Jewel and with Norwegian again NEVER. Read Less

If you are thinking of the Ruby Princess, I beg you tothink again. Our pre-Christmas cruise from LA to Cabo was bad in almost any metric. This was our 9th cruise, and our first (and last) on Princess. The management of people was awful -- our anytime dining routinely required an hour wait for dinner and a half-hour wait for lunch, made worse by the norovirus epidemic that sent many of the buffet customers to the sit-down restaurants. The puzzling thing was when we finally were seated, there were empty tables throughout the diningroom while passengers waited outside. Food quality was uniformly poor -- every pieceof fish I ordered was fishy tasting, the beef was chewy and of inferior quality. The fish and chipsisg pub was raw on the inside. WE had only one stop -- Cabo --and we ewre herded into the diningroom to wait for "our turn". We were fortunate in that we got there early and waited only 90 minutes. Others waited up to 2 1/2 hours to get a tender. Howcouldtheynot have been prepared for all of us wanting to go ashore? Unbelieveably poor preparation. The norovirus was caused by the poor design of the buffet where literally everything was self-serve and everyone used the same utensils. It was a germbreeding ground. For this I blame Princess 100%. The cabins had no soundproofing -- you coukd hear noise from above (doors closing, etc.) and conversatins from the adjoining rooms. Eventhe paper products were dreadful -- recycled ChinesedKleenex which was like sandpaper, brown paper towels in the common restrooms. Even the budget lines do better. THis was the worst cruise experience we have ever had. I would strongly encourage you to avoid Princess at all costs. They will ruin your vacation. Read Less

First off this was suppose to be a 10 day Christmas cruise to Mexico with 4 ports! it was suppose to leave SF. on the 20th of Dec. 2016 but because princess decided to stay 2 days longer in dry-dock, they shortened the cruise to 8 days (this decision affected every passenger on this cruise, not in a good way ether) we were to leave SF. on the 22nd @ 6:00 pm (We couldn't wait to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Camera equipment ready for that iconic shot) but for some reason the ship didn't sail till 4:30 AM the next day on the 23rd, No reason for this delay was ever given. There was no Bon-Voyage party and no "Iconic" pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge... Nothing! Though the cruise line did refund our money for 2 days lost time 8 days instead of 10, the cruise was actually 7 days. So we sailed on, the 2 ports that we did stop at were nice, Cobo 1 day and Mazatlan the next. we missed Pureto Vallarta and Manzanita . then our next port was Ensenada . after the ship docked in Ensenada @ 1:00pm we were rushed to see the "Blow Hole" but by the time the busses drive all the way there, there was only enough time (1 hour) to spend at the attraction before he had to head back to the ship before it sailed. ( A big waste of money for only 1 hour) so after our 7 day cruise ended back at SF. we were told to be out of our rooms by 8:00 AM on the 30th so the crew could get the rooms ready for thee next cruise leaving that day! Well we were all mostly on deck 6 waiting for our disembarkation times. that's when the fun really begins! "ALL' the toilets on that floor clogged! and there was "RAW SEWAGE' on all of the bathroom floors. and it seemed that the staff was vey slow to react to this vey bad situation! but that didn't surprise most of the passengers as it seemed that the crew for this cruise had a very poor attitude during out entire voyage, and this was a Holiday , Christmas Cruise! After we got home, I called Princess to find out what was up with this cruise? They actually seemed "Very unapologetic about the whole situation! they said if we were unhappy we should write them a letter. We have sailed with many different cruise lines and we have also sailed with Princess several times and it seems that princess has lost sight of the big picture and that is "Customer Service" there decision to stay 2 extra days in dry dock wrecked everyone's vacation, and that doesn't seem like a very good business decision to me. Way to go Princess! You putt your customers 2nd instead of first. I will remember that next time we book a cruise vacation. Thanks. Read Less

Our first time with Grand Princess and very disappointed due to the following: · Sailing was delayed by two days, we originally booked to sail on December 20, 2016 and did not sail until Dec 22, 2016 · On the new sailing day Dec 22 we were supposed to depart at 6pm but we were further delayed for another 10 hours, the ship did not sail until Dec 23 at 4:30 AM, further decreasing the number of days we had at sea. · The condition of the ship was unacceptable, (see attached Photos/images) · On our first day on the sea, there were multiple leaks from the ceiling at the horizon buffet, due to this, guests had to line up to have lunch at the dining restaurants · We weren't able to use our balcony due to the unacceptable condition of the carpet and rust chairs and ceiling and corroded pipes · The pool was in such poor condition: chipped tiles, dirty floor and water, guest were allowed to have foods, ice cream and drinks in the hot tub · Staff were painting in some areas causing an unpleasant odor in sections of the ship · The Air conditioning in our stateroom wasn't operating properly · Due to the delay, port itinerary was changed and excursion choices were limited, we originally had 4 ports with full days we ended up have 2.5 day at port. After we sent our initial concerns we were contacted by one princess cruise representatives by the name of Andres. He seemed unmoved by our situation and didn't make us feel as though our concerns were legitimate, when clearly the services provided did not match the advertised vacation Princess Cruise had promised. We laid our claims and an small credit ($50.00) was offered that did not match the lack of services we experienced. We sent another letter to Princess Cruise on Feb 9 and asked that another representative to review our case but Princess Cruise did not give our file to another agent, it was Andres that we spoke for the second time. We were hoping at the very least, the monetary difference between a room with and without balcony should be considered but Andres once again did not accommodate our request. Read Less

We just came back from the truncated 8 days cruise (instead of 10) on Grand Princess from San Francisco and want to share our frustration. The biggest frustration was ports we visited and duration of the time in warm water of Mexico: We bought 10 Days cruise to warm destination in Mexico to swim and enjoy simmer weather in December. We purchased itinerary which includes Cabo, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Our actual cruise included only two of this ports – Cabo and Mazatlán, so just a half of the itinerary we were promised upon the purchase. Port of Ensenada, which was added instead of Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta has different claimant and was actually colder than San Francisco (even if we forget about no comparable points of interest). Duration: Our Ship was scheduled to depart on December 20. It was changed to December 22, but actually left San Francisco on Dec 23 instead. The actual cruise was only 7 days (instead of 10) and short of the HALF of planned warm Mexican destinations! Another part of the frustration was the Grand Princess itself. We love cruising and have been cruising on other Princess ships but also on Oceania, Celebrity, Holland, Norwegian Cruises… We love cruising and respect people working on a cruise ships, but with all our positive attitude and respect, our experience on the Grand Princess is probably the worst we ever had on a cruise ships. The truncated itinerary and late departure was the worst one, but unfortunately we had many frustrating moments on the Grand Princess. Let me start with “welcome back” event for the captain’s circle member. Half an hour in the theater without the captain, no glass of champagne or treats which are traditional for this event… We forgot our invitation card but had our gold room keys when we came. We were giving a lecture on the entrance that event is by invitation only and we had to go back to the room for invitation. By the time we comeback, people were exiting the theater and standing in line for a coupon for “ONE free drink up to $8.95”… We thought that the privilege of being captain’s circle member includes respect and appreciation … by the way my husband tried to use it later in a ship for a drink which cost $9.00 and was told that he can’t get it for a coupon… over the limit ! and it is too complicated to charge 5c from his card. The communication and organization on the ship was really bad, starting with the Captain’s communication. Capitan of the ship was making announcement on the radio, which were rather disturbing than helpful. For example: “We will arrive to the next port one hour late “, but never mentioned actual arrival time. Another example: Ship arrived at the first port – Cabo San Lucas. Disembarkation started. We are ready to go off the ship and to the beach. Our cabin steward did not provide beach towels in our cabin. We are getting to the public area announced on a radio to wait for our tender. The cruise director with another officer are greeting us on the entrance. I am asking about beach towels. The Cruise director reply that we should get it from our cabin and I should go back and check –“perhaps on the top shelf of the closet” he advised... I am going back to the cabin. Checking again – no beach towels. Finding a steward and he is saying that they stop providing beach towels in the cabin for some time now, and I should get it at the waiting area or from the swimming pool… . The room: We had nice located balcony room. When we bought a cruise the “upgraded amenities” was advertised for that room. This was the least of my concern – I brought my own shampoo and conditioner… But have you see the towels which Grand provided? Old, thin, one was so old—had holes…. The facilities: Many did not work at all – for example the steam room was under maintenance all cruise long (as many times as we try to use it). The jacuzzi’s were closed half of the cruise and another half had barely warm water… Erroneously the covered swimming pool was closed all time when ship was in a colder weather.. so most of the time… The entertainment…. One of the advertised ship feature was “Movie under the stars”… We tried to watch the movie three evenings’ times during this cruise. Came 5 min after the “start” time. No blankets! No attendant to ask for a blanket!… Few people who came early were lucky to grab one, but it is December and most of the time our ship is NOT in the warm climate, so one light blanket do not help much even if you lucky to find a used one… The weather report on TV was displaying San Francisco weather in Cabo and N/A after… No Clock / No Time shown on the TV , No daily schedule on TV or current announcements,… The restaurant: Formal night… Christmas celebration.. Line to the restaurant. We finally sited and ordered dinner. Washed out hands after returning menu to the waiter. Waiting for meal to arrive. The head waiter coming from table to table and greeting people, shaking hands of the passengers and introducing himself. His name is Mike. He is from Jamaica. He is smiling and extending his hand for a handshake first to my husband and then to me… I am not happy that I will shake hand of the man who just did it with every other passenger in the restaurant. I was also not happy that he extended his hand to a woman first, (would expect better manners from the restaurant manager in a cruise ship) … But I do not want to make guy feel bad, It’s a holiday and he means well.. so I will shake his hand and go and wash it after.. Shaking hands and at this moment with his loud voice Mike is saying: “Marry Christmas!” I am replying: ”Happy Holiday to you to!” “Marry Christmas!” – he is saying again. ”Are you celebrating Christmas?” -“No we are celebrating Chanukah” – I reply, waiting for him to which us a happy Hanukah, but instead he is Loudly and Clearly asking “WHAT is Hanukah? “ I can’t believe my ear.. Thinking maybe he did not hear me well.. Repeating and explaining: “We are celebrating Hanukah. It is Jewish holiday”. Mike is quiet for a second, and with the same loud voice replying: “Never heard about it! “…. Dear Princess cruises, do you train your management staff? We want to thank you all people on the cruise ship who work hard and did their best to have our long waited and hard earned vacation to be as good as possible – the room attendant, the waiters in the restraints, the guy greeting us in the entrance to the restaurant and seating us every night, staff at the registration and tour desks, and many others who we may not see, but who worked hard to make this journey possible. We wish that Princess would make it possible to achieve promised level on cruising on the Grand Princess and hope that something will be done about it. Read Less

Chose Oceania because of friends recommendation , in filling out registration, we made the HUGE mistake of missing part that they wouldn't accept U.S. passport card even though completely valid on this particular cruise. Sadly, travel documents to be reviewed before cruise came 3 days into cruise, sent overnight by Oceania, hmm. They wouldn't let us board ,so we had our passport books overnighted and met up with ship in Ensenada. When being turned down in LA ,the person who was rude ,indifferent ,cold, uncaring, absolutely unapologetic to our dilemma turns out was ships officer in charge of...Customer relations! When on board ,no attempt to say a "Glad you made it! " or even a welcome. The rest of cruise after that was OK at best. The crew/help seemed overworked, trying to keep a smile .The port stops were way to short, the ship was boring, too small. Oceania is trying to cram too much in a cruise to seem as good as the higher end lines, but in doing so fail to give that great cruise feeling we had from previous cruises. Lesson learned , spend the extra money and be hating to disembark instead of having a feeling you did not get what you paid for! Never say never unless you're talking about cruising on Oceania! I chose cruise because it departed San Diego. However what I didn't know is that they sold out to CARNIVAL and so the impeccable service always offered by Holland America no longer exists. The elevator doors closed on me resulting in CRACKED RIBS and a very painful journey without any medications because HA refused to provide medical attention unless I paid an exorbitant fee! Their elevator!!! I have since learned this is a common occurrence on the ship. The food was substandard - meat stringy and tough. Chicken flavorless and tough. Resorted to eating at Pinnacle Grill which was good. Guest Services were awesome in not providing any services, lol! The Indonesians have been replaced for the most part by Filipinos who are poorly trained. The entertainment left much to be desired but the Piano Man was good (not Liberace) and the crew show was good. The rest of it was mediocre. Read Less

I only chose this cruise as it leaves from San Diego. I have been on many of HA's ships and loved them all but this one was awful. The awesome Indonesians were replaced by Filipino's poorly trained. The food has gone down big time, even the lamb and steaks were STRINGY. Maybe a first time cruiser would like it but anyone who travelled on other ships would know the difference. My accident was the fault of HA but even so they refused to send doctor unless I paid exorbitant amount of money for the consultation. I am still in pain - 1 week later - bruised ribs, whiplash, etc. The entertainment by the crew was good, and also the piano man (he wasn't Liberace) but the rest of the entertainment was sub par. The Pinnacle Grill was excellent and I do recommend you eat meals there rather than the Lido. The first Hot Tub was scalding hot. The second one o.k. The cabin sofa was so dirty it was BLACK. When I pointed this out they threw a white sheet over it, lol. On the last day it was removed. The Breakfast in room dining never got it right! Read Less

Avoid this cruise line at all costs, Royal Caribbean is around the same price, and you'll get significantly better quality overall. You get better service, on average, from Denny's employees than you will from the staff here. Chances are, I’m not the only one seriously wondering about the direction they're taking their cruises. The formal dining experience is often a selling point of these trips, and if I had to deal with this kind of outright BAD customer service at a restaurant, I would never come back. Between the fact that our waiters forgot our orders four times at the formal dining, serving cold food at the formal dining, finding hair in my food at the formal dining, and gutting all their good trivia activities for poorly-executed Hasbro games, I’m sure I’m not the only one questioning their quality. Rude, trashy, inappropriate C-rate comedians aren't something I really want to pay for either. If you want someone to berate you on your vacation, then this is the cruise line for you, because they will. I'd HIGHLY recommend Royal Caribbean. Same price range, SIGNIFICANTLY better experience. I am a Elite with Princess as is my partner. Several months ago we cruised on the Pacific Princess, one of the original Renaissance ships with 684 passengers, which was the Love Boat cruise with the original cast of the LOVE BOAT; it was a great cruise! Now; this cruise on the Star was the worst Princess Cruise I have ever been on and I will no longer cruise on Princess Preplanned items with Princess included Dr;s statement that a oxygen generator was required at night; despsite the fact that I had prior approval on prior Princess cruise. Also Ihad to send info regarding wheelchair requirement for boarding due to steps and long ramps. As we were traveling with a group and they all desired any time dinner I went along with that despite the fact that I had tried it once before and was not happy as we like to eat early. The first night resulted wherein the group wanted to eat at 7:30pm and that was too late for us The group found out that they had to wait in line for quite some time while I went down and requested early dinning and I got into the dining room before 6:00 pm and was assigned a table in the Amalfi dining room. Anytime dining is a misnomer as one cannot eat any time but must wait in line for a considerable time; one does not pay thousands of dollars to wait in line for dinner! Going back to boarding while we had made prior reservations for a wheelchair we had sto wait1/2 hour for the initial wheelchair and then when boarded we had to wait an additional 3/4 lof an hour for a ships wheelchair. The elevators are a major problem as one must wait considerable time for a elevator and after seeing 5 elevators pass our floor I made the decision to walk up 3 decks...a major mistake as my 84 year old knees and legs rebelled and are still complaining. The dining room and the entire ship...since Carnival has taken over...is a constant sell sell situation; soda packages, desert packages, wine packages...every time one moved some staff person is attempting to sell something; the latlest addition to this sales garbage is at the dining room table where they are attempting to sell desert packages. Also the servers are obviously trained to keep the wine glasses constantly filled even when one says NO. In addition there used to be on the menu several daily alternates if one did not like the menu at dinner; that has now disappeared. The room service breakfast menu used to have choice of eggs wherein now they offer juice and coffee or the alternative of a $45 special breakfast with wine!!! My partner fell in the Vista dinning room due to poor lighting and people moving vhairs with no one assisting people to find seats as used to happen in the theatre. The canapes offered to Elites are so poor that we refused to order them on this trip as they tast3 like the paper they are offered on. I definitely will NOT take another Princess cruise unless it is on the Pacific Princess; aka Renasissance ship as that appears to be the only vessel in the Princess inventory that serves the clients in a decent anticipated matter. How can a ship be designed and have a dining room such as the Amalfi for seats several hundred people and not have a bathroom on that floor and only have one elevator going down to that dining room. Not to even mention the design of the ship wherein one must go up and down several decks to get to the dining room! The ships design engineer must have been drunk....this is not a ship for seniors or anyone who anticipates enjoying a cruise!! Read Less

If you want to be treated as though you are an inconvenience to employees, do not want to have fun, and want to be yelled at scolded or told no on everything you want to do, you should definitely go on a Ruby Princess Cruise. Unlimited drink cards: A joke. Bartenders will threaten to take your card away if you look under 30 and order two drinks such as a shot and water, while other guests in their late 50's are allowed to order 3+drinks at one time. There were only three bartenders throughout the trip that did not look like they hated their life, that had any experience in bar tending, and that could make more than one drink at a time. Everyone behind the bar was extremely under-trained. I was carded when I ordered a coke. Go to Hitson or Robb, they will take care of you. They have constant smiles, good attitudes, and look like they genuinely enjoy life. Rooms: There was nothing special about them, but they were clean at all times which was appreciated. Dinner: If you have food allergies you are required to order your food at least one day in advance in anytime dining. If you do not, the head waiter will come over and sternly speak to you and treat you as a child that broke some rule. They are usually one step away from sending you to your room. There was only ONE head waiter that smiled and that treated me with any respect. The wait staff was just okay. No one had personality. It was almost as though the head waiters did not allow fun or enjoyment in the dining room and that made me feel sad for everyone that worked there. The dress code is a joke. They only enforce it if you look under 30 (again). My friend was asked to leave to change his tank top, but the 5 (yes, 5) tables completely surrounding us with people 60+ all had hats, tanks, and shorts on, all of which were against the dress code. Naturally, we pointed out if you are going to enforce a dress code, it needs to be throughout the dining room, not at one table. Restaurants: If something says “reservations recommended” ignore it. They do not mean that. They mean required. My husband and I were refused dinner until after 9:00 pm, in an empty restaurant. Bingo: order the tablet, not the paper cards. Only tablets win. Casino: Only place on the ship where you are treated with respect, but you are also spending hundreds of dollars. Karaoke: Again, a joke. You need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time just to sign up to sing. If you request to sing, you are yelled at and told to bring it up to passenger services. Coffee Shop: The salted Caramel Strata is amazing, ask Ashley to make it. He is super sweet, fun, and will remember you. The shows: I went to two of the three shows. They have an amazing concept, great actors, singers, dancers, and the costumes are amazing, but the show is very slow. Get yourself a cold drink while you sit there because the ventilation is horrible in the theatre. I left dripping sweat with how hot it got in that room. Overall, I spent too much money on this cruise to be treated the way that my husband and I were. This was the opposite of how I thought our honeymoon would go. We had to fight just to get the credits we were suppose to have for referring 15 people to the ship. The ports were amazing and we had a great time on the excursions (Did not book through the cruise). The excursions gave us a break from the poor attitudes of the boat. For a while, I thought perhaps it is our group, but in speaking with other passengers, they agreed that this was the worst cruise that they had been on as well. I could have complained while on the cruise, but chose not to. The only thing they could have done was to give us a credit for another cruise, which will not be happening. We will not be booking another trip with Princess. We will be going with another line in hopes of a better experience. Read Less

It was booked through a cruise planner and included 3 private concerts with Colin Raye, a famous country singer. The cruise planner wasn't informed of changes in the itinerary until one day before we set sail. The first change in the itinerary was a deletion of Mazatlan, due to necessary minor repairs that needed to be done in Puerta Vallarta, so they said we would be there two days instead of one. We were ok with that, since we were already on the ship, and didn't want to cancel the cruise on behalf of one port change. Then, on day two in Puerta Vallarta, the captain announced over the ships intercom system that due to the extensive repair work, we wouldn't sail to Cabo San Lucas until later that evening, maybe 5:00, instead of the planned 2:00 departure. Then, at 5:00, the captain announced that due to the unfinished repair work, we wouldn't depart until about midnight, and since it was so late, we were not going to stop at Cabo San Lucas at all! This turned out to be a nightmare of a cruise, since we didn't sign up for a one port cruise! Then, after talking with one of the workers on the ship, we discovered that the Norwegian Jewel has had this unresolved problem for two months, and that they could have repaired it earlier, but didn't. That really made us fuming mad, since they obviously deceived us into thinking that the repair work was something new, and that it would only have a small impact on the cruise. They kept back information, so that we wouldn't cancel out and demand a full refund. Instead, they offered us a 25% refund, and if we wanted to book another cruise with NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines), they would offer us a 25% discount on another cruise with them! What a piece of crap cruise experience, especially after I saved for over a year to go on my first seven day cruise! NCL sucks! Read Less

I really hate NCL and this was the worst cruise ever. Ok. Let me get the compliments out of the way. I had a standard balcony stateroom, which was adequately furnished. I really liked the stateroom attendant, Mohammed from Indonesia. He was very pleasant and always accommodated our requests timely. I also purchased the spa pass and found that to be worth the money. If you like soaking in water and serenity and having a nice little spot on the ship that is your own... I'd get the pass. The spa was very cleanly and peaceful. I enjoyed the Japan pool (cold water plunge) on the hot days coming back from Puerto Vallarta. The main show entertainment was pretty good too, with one huge exception discussed below. My last compliment would be for Moderno, the Brazilian steakhouse. The food was awesome, especially the salad bar, the bread, and the drinks. I went there twice and loved it both times. Embarkation was super easy and smooth. Also the lifeboat drill was really nice as they let you just sit down in a restaurant. Now for the bad. NCL cancelled one of the three ports a week before the cruise began in order to have scheduled maintenance on the engines. I requested a refund of the port taxes for the cancelled port and NCL's customer service was quite rude and refused to refund the port taxes. Next, there was a fire aboard the ship on night one. The crew were called to stations and the cruise director Archie jokingly said, "Don't worry folks, they're going to the buffet." I knew something was wrong because the ship changed directions as if it was heading back to LA, and then came to a complete stop for hours. I called the front desk and asked what was going on. I was told it was a routine drill for the crew and not to worry. Frankly, I don't appreciate being lied to in an emergency. I don't appreciate that no announcements whatsoever were made explaining the nature of the emergency so that I could at least know to stay in my stateroom and have safety gear handy in case things went bad. I feel NCL put my life in jeopardy by this lack of communication. Next, the engine repairs did not get completed on time and then on the morning when we were supposed to dock at Cabo, the captain explained that we would not be docking at Cabo. The whole ship turned into a frenzy. We went from a three port vacation to a one port vacation. The front desk was jam packed. They offered everyone a $50 stateroom credit for the "inconvenience". I was told by the front desk that I wanted a greater refund and was given the phone number for NCL customer service. I told them that I did not wish to contact NCL customer service and asked for the staff to call them on my behalf and obtain authorization for a greater refund. They refused my request. Note to cruisers: if you call NCL customer service post cruise, they will not answer the phone. I have called three times and every time I have waited over a half hour without any answer. The hotel manager said he would provide my information to NCL with a request for contact. I have not been contacted. The night they cancelled Cabo, there was a letter in everyone's stateroom saying that they would get a 25% refund on the cruise fare and a 25% credit toward a future cruise. It has been over a week and I have yet to receive either. Again, customer service does not answer the phones so I emailed them on Thursday. It is Sunday and still no response. The headline comedian made a joke during the main family hour comedy show that included the word "fag", which I found repulsively offensive. What was most offensive to me was that there were children in the audience and NCL was teaching these children that its ok to laugh at this word and use it in jokes. I complained to the cruise director who said I would be contacted by NCL corporate. I have emailed them asking them to confirm that hate speech would not be included in NCL's entertainment in the future. I have not heard back. Next negative review was the casino. First the ventilation was horrible and if you stay in there longer than a minute, you will reek of cigarette smoke. Second, I played the coin dozer game and like most other casinos with this game they have small wads of money and various trinkets in the play field. Well I won one of the wadded up stacks of bills to find out that it was wrapped around a bunch of one dollar bills. One of the casino staff laughed at me as I unraveled it and expressed disappointment that anyone would be so cheap. Next, I won a die keychain and took it to the cashier. In every other casino where I have played the coin dozer, the trinkets are traded in for various prizes at the cashier. Not on the NCL Jewel. I was told in a matter of fact way that the trinket was a "prize" for me to keep. I haven't felt so defrauded since I was a kid. I complained to the casino manager that a sign should be placed on the machine to explain the value of the prizes in the play field and was politely brushed off. Outside of Moderno, the rest of the food on the ship was either mediocre or downright awful. The food temperature was often cold. One morning I got some sticky buns off the breakfast buffet that the server was just putting out. I was expecting some sticky buns hot out of the oven. I got sticky buns fresh from the fridge. The chicken parmesan at La Cucina was something off of a TV dinner. Everyone I talked to hated Le Bistro. I couldn't even finish my meal. I got the pork tenderloin, which was grossly overcooked. It came with apples, of which all you could taste was salt. The menu said that it had a calvados cream over the dish, but it was more of a broken crème fresh. I refused the meal and went to eat at the buffet. Cagney's steakhouse was ok. My mistake going in was expecting a 4 star steakhouse. What I got was more like an Applebees. If you go in with mediocre expectations, you may enjoy it. To sum up my review of the food, this is my sixth cruise and the first cruise where I didn't gain any weight. I suppose the result is good, but the experience was not. Overall, because most of the guests seemed a bit miserable, so did the crew. I will give a shout out to Bea on the entertainment staff. I was absolutely shocked that she remembered my name. I thought that she was fun and energetic. NCL should give her the job of cruise director and send Archie packing because Archie was not fun at all. The ship common areas were nice and the ship itself was on par with other cruise lines. The drinks seemed watered down, I learned too late that you can order two drinks and ask for the second one to just be an extra shot. That is my frank experience on the Jewel. You are all warned. This was the second time we took this cruise as our family vacation. The first cruise was in October 2015 and we had an excellent experience. We booked a two bedroom family suite and we did enjoy the cabin. Since we travel with our children who are 8 and 11, we appreciate having a separate bedroom and bath for them to use. Our butler, concierge and room steward were all excellent and we had no issues. We did have issues with two of three ports being cancelled due to a maintenance problem. We also were floating in the water for 5 hours after we left LA for an unexplained reason. I would have never booked a cruise (with children) that had 5 sea days on an older ship. There was very little for my boys to do on board. They were bored with ping pong and the mini slide at the overcrowded pool by Monday. They hated the kids club on board. The staff grouped kids ages 6-12 together and catered the activities to the younger children. My boys were told to take it easy in playing games to make it fair to the young kids. They actually had to play a version of duck duck goose. How is that fun at their ages? Every evening was the same complaint about being bored. The entire program needs to be revamped. My husband enjoys gambling on cruises and was upset that the casino was closed for two nights during our stay in Puerto Vallarta. Many other guests were as well. The free drinking program on board led to many drunk people on board. I think they were all so bored with the lack of activities that they just drank. Again, not a good scene for kids. We attempted to play some board games in the game room only to find that most of them were missing pieces or instructions. This was a little frustrating for us as well. The TV selection on board was also terrible. The same movies were recycling over and over again. Both DVD players in our suite did not work. Last year, I was able to bring water and juice and a sleeve of Diet Coke on board. This year it was confiscated during check in. They only serve Pepsi on the ship. My husband got a massage on board out of boredom. He enjoyed the service but all of the services were very pricey! If you are traveling with children, I would advise you to take another ship and consider using another cruise line. We payed a lot for a suite and didn't have a good time! All of us couldn't wait to get off the ship in LA! Read Less

Was my 2nd NCL cruise and 5th overall and first with our kids 6 and 8. As you see from the others on the same cruise, this was one that was not as planned by NCL well. Got the email about missing 1 port before we left. On the first night on the boat I noticed on the TV channel it showed us going back towards LA which I found odd but come to find out it was the engine room fire/smoke issue. I do not fault them for that as I would rather have been back in port that left out to sea with an issue such as this. The communication as we got to PV was lacking to say the least. We knew we had 2 days but was told the 2nd day we needed to be back on the ship by 2 30 PM. Then around 10 pm they announce a delay and say it will be 5 pm to get back. If we would've know that we could've plan a more intense adventure. We did not leave till almost 1 a.m. that night and knew than there was no way to get to Cabo with any time to due much with the tenders that you have to do there. We weren't told til about 9 or 10 a.m. the next day that we were infact going straight back to LA without stopping. This needed to be communicated better and felt bad for the staff as people were getting irate with them and they have no control. We work in the hospitality industry so really felt for them. IDK if we will cruise with NCL again as the ship was older which we knew, but the kids started getting cabin fever by the 5th day with not much new to do. The shows were OK and he food is what you expect nothing too great but kept you full. Kids club was good for the kids and us too but they were kinda overwhelmed also. Read Less

This cruise was HORRIBLE. Friday we get an email saying no stop over in Mazatlán. We purchased a cruise for 7day, 3 port adventure. We only stopped in 1 port and was held over night due to maintaince that needed to be done. Of course on our time. which should have been done when no passengers were on board. Carpeting being done in the stairways, dangerous to all. SMELL was aweful through out , I guess due to plumbing. They knew this before we left California, unreal. We were taking friends for their first cruise. They upgraded their cabin, toilet stopped working for 3 days, They paid a lot of money to upgrade! Captain anounces that we will not be stopping in next port. Due to maintance issues taking so long. People were very upset, we even signed a petition! Totally unacceptable on NCL, we want a refund!!! Food was cold and flavorless, $5.00 for a bottle of water? REALLY???? Chinese resturant was food out of a box. NASTY! Only good food was the BBQ in the pool area, but couldn't find a seat. Service was sad, bartender in Java bar told me to go get a Pina Colada at another bar, he was out. We had to go to the bar to get drinks. Small wait staff? Entertainment, comedian was good. Otherwise same thing every night. Couldn't go on a shore excursion, couldn't get to shore. Never again! We were celebrating our 32 anniversary, Read Less

NCL decided that our cruise would be a "maintenance" cruise. Which meant we missed 2/3 ports (Cabo and Mazatlan) because they wanted to work on the ship in Puerto Vallerta. That's not what we paid for at all. The captain tried to explain that this will help future cruises...but why would we care about future cruises? By day 6 we all just wanted to get off the boat, things became so boring. Thank goodness for their Splash Academy...because our kid did have fun there. So, when they canceled Cabo the initial response was a $50/cabin credit...which was rather insulting. After complaining to the front desk, they took off our daily gratuities ($13.95/person/day). So basically they stiffed their own employees, which rubbed us the wrong way. The next day we got a letter that we'd get 25% back on this cruise and 25% towards a future cruise. Which doesn't account for all the $ we spend on airfare/hotels, and all the wasted vacation time. Add in that our AC wasn't working and the room was so humid that everything was constantly wet. I'd think twice before sailing with NCL again. Read Less

I'm sure you read all the other reviews on this cruise the week of Oct 9th which was the worse cruise! First time on Norwegian and it is our LAST time! They definitely should have cancelled the cruise and taken the ship out to get the repairs done and not ruin everyone's vacation! Norwegian only thinks of their company and the money - all about the money and not what's best for their customers and to keep their customers. I'm sure this will be the last time a lot of passengers ever use Norwegian again. We work hard to earn our vacations to have it ruined by missing 2 of 3 ports when they knew in advance there were problems. The only staff that weren't rude were the 2 bartenders at O'Sheehans and thank goodness for that bar because the only thing to do on the ship was drink and try to eat some of the crappy food! They don't know how to entertain and I the ONLY reason I know the cruise director's name is because the last day I heard a bad story about him! Every other cruise we've been on, you always know and SEE the cruise director all over the ship. It was our anniversary and we went to the dinning room and they had the ship going so fast to get to PV to start the repairs sooner, the boat was rocking bad. They sat us next to the outside wall and as soon as I sat down, I thought I'd be sick. We asked the matre'd to move us and she moved us one table over! REALLY! She could care less about taking care of the passengers and this was before cancelling Cabo so passengers were still in fairly good spirits. The entertainment was terrible. The shows were ok but the guy playing the guitar obviously forgot that he was on a ship and had the same audience because he told the same jokes every night! REALLY - get some variety in your show! There were no tv stations in the staterooms - all they kept showing was the newlywed game they had and kids weren't allowed to attend but they played over and over in the staterooms. We didn't have children but I thought the show and the people on it were ridiculous! They had dif movies on a set schedule but there were only a couple worth watching but always at odd times/middle of the night. The last sea day was cold and windy with no sun and they don't even have the rights to play college football games. REALLY! Hope someone from this cruiseline actually reads these and take some pointers - get the football package and show something on the tvs except Soccer and tennis - ppl want a variety! This just was the WORSE cruise ever and we've been on a ton! It was an insult that they only gave us $50 onboard credit PER statement and 25% refund - Why wasn't it a lot more because we missed TWO Ports. When I got back and everyone asked me how the cruise was my comment is "IT WAS THE MOST EXPENSVE BOAT RIDE"! They should be giving us at least 50% off the cruise we already paid for! NCL IS THE WORSE CRUISE LINE AND IF YOU ARE SMART, DON'T EVER USE THEM! The AC def wasn't working either because I normally get cold and packed a sweater but I never had to use! The casino def wasn't paying out and I'm sure they had to make up for their loss of not having it open for 2 days while STUCK in PV but again, not our fault but we paid dearly! Never so bored in my life and you can only sit around so long before going crazy from BOREDOM! HATE NCL! Read Less

Never again will I or anyone in my family entrust NCL. Within five hours into the cruise there was a fire on the aft. We asked what the smell and smoke was and told they did not know what we were speaking of. Then to later find out there indeed was a fire right where we saw and asked. The employees in charge of the lifeboats were on 24 hour call. NCL took two out of three of our ports away only to say that they were going to give us 50.00 back. Furthermore NCL knew that there was a problem with the ship and still allowed the ship to be on the water. NCL failed to make proper repairs and knew about the repairs needing to be done since August 2016. The captain said they had to make repairs to make sure FUTURE cruises were going to continue without any complications. What about everyone on board during the repairs, did our vacation not count to him ....only future cruises counted. The cruise was boring. Artchie the cruise director needs to either retire or find fun. Kids onboard were so board they were sitting on the 4 floor under the stairs complaining how boring it was. I couldn't dispute what they were saying because I was so bored I couldn't wait to get off the boat. They cater to only one group of age and that is OLD. If you like to sit around drink and eat and that is it then you have it made. It was such a waste of vacation time and money. My husband is disabled and asked Archie what there was to do as a family he told my husband we could play family dodge ball or do the family scavenger hunt. My husband asked to do you want to sit in my wheelchair and you give me your legs that you are walking with because how am I to go up and down stairs to do the family scavenger hunt or play dodge ball !!!! Archie response was to tell security that my husband threatened to punch him in the face which is a complete LIE my husband cant even stand!!!!! Not only do they discriminate the disabled but children as well. They kicked the children out of the pool to play an adult game! There is an adult pool but they didn't want to disturb the adults. So the disabled and children beware they want your money but that is it. Take your money and spend it with another company. Worst company ever. Once they got our money they became complete jerks Read Less

I used this cruise as a goal for me to get through hip replacement and as a family vacation. We booked in February, and naturally been excited all the way down to boarding, a great time in store for us. Five day before sailing we were told Mazatlán would be removed from the list with an additional day in Puerto Vallarta. Travelling with seven others, not enough time to change to a different date. No big deal. The maintenance on the ship did not go as planned and we were so late getting out of PV, Cabo was cancelled. Very little communication from the captain. On Friday, the day for Cabo, I was under the impression we would have a short day, but still get to stop. Was not till close to 10am when they announced the cancellation. Time to rethink the day, me and 2000 other passengers.By that time, the pool deck was packed, no loungers available. They came up with a new entertainment schedule and never update the NCL App (which I think is great for $9.99 per person) missed some activities due to this. My room was very hot all the time, AC turned on as low as possible, many other had the same issue. The ship was also very warm, some days the casino was intolerable. Never met my room steward, had a couple of days when we had no new towels or the room made up. The free drink package was confusing. Only free if less than $15, what a hassle to have to research the cost of a drink. I can understand some high end booze not being free, but really????? Drinks on first day were great, seemed watered down after that. I learned to order double shots after that. Azzure was worse food and service I have ever had. over a 3 hour dinned, and the food was cols. Tsar was fantastic. The 3 specialty restaurants were just OK. We did Teppan, BBQ, and Cagneys. The seating at the Teppan was so tight, I could not squeeze in enough to reach the table. Show was good, although we did get splattered with hot grease, my wife and son have the red marks to prove it. We do Teppan all the time, this in now way was comparable to other restaurants on land. Our rice was only half cooked, thus very hard to chew. Shrimp and scallpops were great, Filet was so so. BBQ was very slow. took forever for the food to make it rounds. Waited for 40 minutes to try the sausage, then it was terrible. Salad bar was very good. Just seemed to take a lonf time waiting for the meat to come around, whole reason I went there was to eat a cow. They made it difficult. Cagneys was good. Service and time was very good, Steaks were very good, overall great way to end the cruise. Buffet was a buffet. Some was good, some was bad. Food was very scarce after 1030 or so. There was a place far aft on the fantail that had some food, unlike Carnival where there is pizza and other stuff all the time, this was hit and miss. about 1100pm they would bring some snacks to the casino. My kids love to go to the room and get room service, cookies, junk food, etc. $7.95 for room service!!! Not used to that, we knew before we boarded, so we did not do it. Liked the BBQ on the pool deck everyday, food was so so. Looked better than it was. Felt like the casino slots got tighter as the cruise moved on, I am sure with so long in PV they lost a lot of money and had to make it up. My nephew was a finalist in the slot tournament, schedule for 1030. we all showed up to root him on and they delayed it so they could sell more qualifying tournaments. He ended up winning the $500, was a great experience for him. The Cirque Solei show, probably have the name wrong, was fantastic, a must see. The magician was very good and the comic was good had he spent less time promoting buying his products. The Karoaoki was great, some very talented people, you can tell they had been rehearsing for some time, they were great and made for good entertainment. I met a restaurant guy in the shopping area trying to get us in to eat, we chatted about the ship, he told me our part was late, we would be late leaving PV, and would miss Cabo. I thought he was just BS'ing me, he was right!!!!!!!. Seemed he knew more than the crew, I found that interesting. After all the changes, people were very upset, the Customer Service desk was packed, was not clear who was getting what back and why. There was a petition being circulated, I signed, what the hell, and I applied to have my gratuities reimbursed. I feel bad taking $$$ from the staff, but figured NCL corporate will take care of them. We got a letter of what will be reimbursed, 25% of our cruise reservation, $50 room credit, port fees and 25% off next cruise. for me it was about $700 for 4 of us. My last NCL cruise on Getaway was excellent, so I do not hold this against NCL, sometimes crap happens, and this time it happened to us. The irony is knew when we left we had a free NCL cruise through Casino promotions to be picked up after we got back, so we got another NCL cruise to plan for the future. A bad day cruising is always way better than the best day at work. what was weird was that this was the first time I was actually ready to get off the boat, and did not go through post cruise depressions (PCD) yearning for food, booze and fun...........Better luck next time I hope Read Less
