We have wanted to cruise the Irrawaddy for many years and were recommended this river boat by our travel agent and tour company. From the moment we arrived at the boat to the moment we disembarked, our experience was delightful. The Cruise Director, AB Eland, was extremely present, attentive, caring and courteous. Nothing was too much trouble ! The ship, kitchen, spa and service staff worked like clockwork and despite fairly low water levels in the river, our cruise experience was flawless. We had chosen a luxury suite cabin and it was exactly as advertised. It was very well appointed, spotlessly clean and well serviced for our short stay. The shore excursions were very well planned and organized and we had an exceptional guide by the name of Khin Nyein Thu. Khin was intelligent, articulate and extremely knowledgable about all the sites we saw and activities we undertook. She also spoke excellent, clear English. The chef, Myo Min Aung was also very good indeed and every mealtime there was something to look forward to. His cooking class, as with other on-board activities were fun and entertaining. Myanmar tourism is suffering because of the situation in the west of the country. Our entire trip was devoid of any issues and our advice would be to go now ! Read Less

Just returned from the Mekong River Cruise including the AMA Land package and enjoyed every bit of it. The ship is a lovely intimate experience, 108 were on board, the majority 50+ seasoned cruisers, various fitness levels, and everyone appeared to have a great time. The cabins are very spacious, plenty of storage space, large bathroom for cruising, and enjoyed the small deck to sit out on and watch the countryside go by some days. The shore excursions were optional, and with at least 2 offered every day we did pass on a couple, but sunrise at Angkor Wat and the Buddhist blessing should not be missed. Food on the ship was plentiful, lunch buffets were sometimes a little limited in options, we hit a couple dinner choices that didn't really hit the mark, but a strong 4 for the food and all that they do to try and make you happy. What we most have to commend them for is the Service. The Ship crew all went out of their way to make you welcome and meet your every need, the AMA tour manager (Long) and the Guides we had (Dara/Tek/Jack) shared such a joy for their countries and sharing the history with us that you wanted to spend more time with them. This is not a trip I would take with children as there are no real "activities' for them, but for the 50+ wanting to see these beautiful countries and their heartwarming people, I definitely would recommend this trip. Each day showed a new landscape and a new adventure! Read Less

We had been on trips with Viking before and met people that highly recommended this cruise. We were not disappointed! This was our fourth Viking cruise and all have been great, but we think this one was the best yet. The service, food, and guides were amazing. We already loved Viking and didn't think they could do better, but they did. The guides were with us through out and all had wonderful stories and history to tell. One of our local guides in Cambodia lived through the Khmer Rouge era, and we also got to meet a gentleman that survived a brutal time in a prison there. We toured small villages and children and adults came out to greet us. The heat and humidity was tough at times, but our guides always had plenty of water for us and they were very attentive to our needs by asking how we were feeling. The ships crew was very friendly and eager to help as well. I would love to go on this cruise again! Read Less

Chose this cruise with the time spent on the Mekong and the special excursions into life on the river. Ho Chi Minh was bustling with time at the market and city "must see's". The Jahan was a refuge from the city...wonderful crew and accommodations. The Lindblad leaders were outstanding... everyone of them. They each brought their expertise to the group and our Nat Geo expert was excellent. The food was delicious and each staff member always greeted us with smiles and pleasant personalities. Each visit along the way was informative of river life and all the local guides were most inspiring and passionate about their countries. The trip was beyond expectations on all levels. Despite the 95 degree heat everyday, it certainly will be one of our best trips ever!! SE Asia is a world apart from the USA and quiet and insight into how these people live and are so happy with so little. The river people who live on boats and rely on their fishing for income and the little towns who also sell their vegetables at road side stands...the many many markets at all the tourist sights...a way of life that was fascinating to see. We chose Scenic as we have been very happy with this cruise line on a previous trip. Embarkation and disembarkation went well. Rooms were spacious...bathroom a good size. Room was spotless as was the entire ship. Ports were not always easy to access with the ship tied up to places where steps were sand bags and places where there were no railings, etc. Keep in mind that this is a developing country. There were lots of dining choices and the food was very good. The excursions were interesting...some of them seemed to be not worth the time for example the candy factory trip. Staff were amazing and our tour guide that we had for cruise and land tour was excellent. I would say entertainment was not as good as other ships we have been on but it was adequate and that is not even one of the reasons we went on this cruise. We like Scenic because everything is included in the up front cost and you know beforehand what you are going to pay before you leave home. Any extras are for souvenirs. Read Less

It was an opportunity to experience the cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia, including the Mekong River cruise. Our previous river cruises with Scenic have always been memorable and this was no exception. It was 5 star luxury from the moment we boarded the ship until disembarkation. All the staff we spoke to, were very proud to be working for Scenic and it showed in their enthusiasm to assist the passengers. The shore excursions (included in the tour cost) were well organised and very informative. Although some of the shore excursions eg the Killing Fields and S-21 were confronting, we feel that it was very important for non-Khmer people to be better informed about the extent of the Khmer Rouge genocidal nightmare and the effects on the Khmer population. Evening entertainment provided by local NGO performers on two occasions was excellent and well received. Meals catered for a wide variety of tastes and feedback from other passengers indicated that they were very happy as well. In summary, although the Mekong cruise was a different format to European cruises we have undertaken previously, it was very enjoyable and we would love to return. Read Less

This was our first cruise on Scenic. Friends from Canada asked us to join them. The highlight of our trip was our tour director- Dara Chhung. We first met him in Ho chi Minh and left him in Siem Reap. He was an excellent director, extremely knowledgeable in local history and customs, very customer oriented and willing to talk about everyday life. He got to know his tour group and was always ready with a helping hand or willing to take a picture. He truly made the trip a great experience. the ship itself was excellent, comfortable quiet room with a great bed , and a friendly staff. Our butler was checking constantly to see if we needed anything. The least impressive part of the cruise was the dining room. My husband and I cannot eat seafood. this was relayed through our TA before the cruise and told to Dara when we met him. He mad sure on all our shore meals that we had the correct food. On board, the Chef didn't seem to care. I spoke to him the first day, and he said he'd take care of things. We were invited to one of the special dinners , and half the courses were seafood. When we mentioned it to him, it was like he;d never heard it before. Then grand finale dinner on board, we could eat the appetizer and the palate cleanser and that was it. Although we mentioned it to our waiter, there were no alternatives presented. This really did sour us on the dining room. Read Less

I had always wanted to see Indochina and when the Scenic brochure arrived my mind was made up. The Mekong and Sonle Tap rivers are filled with sites and sounds I had never experienced elsewhere. The river cruise was preceded by a land tour through Vietnam including stops in Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An and finished off with three nights in Siam Reap, Cambodia. The last day of the trip was a sunrise watch at Angkor Wat followed by a champagne breakfast at another temple and culminated in a gala candlelight dinner at yet another temple complex. The evening included traditional entertainment. The days are always filled with area specific activities which are totally optional but are all very entertaining. For example, one evening in Saigon my wife and I and a dozen others were picked up at our hotel by a fleet of Vespa motorcycles and driven through the busy streets to have dinner with the locals at a sidewalk café followed by another drive to another café for dessert and finished at a second floor jazz bar for drinks and entertainment. This all included in the price of your trip. Scenic is a first class company and in my mind is the best in that business. Read Less

I have travelled with AMA before which was great but this was truly the best trip I have ever been on and my 2 travel companions agree! The guides are local to the areas you visit (Saigon, Angkor Wat, Ha Long Bay, Hanoi, etc). They are extremely knowledgeable and share their personal stories about life in these locations. Although some of what you see is very disturbing (i.e. the Killng Fields) they handle it sensitively and you are truly sharing their history with them. The pre and post days are in the best hotels in each city. If you are looking for a high quality adventure in a beautiful part of the world with very welcoming people, take this trip!!! Read Less

It is an area of India I have wanted to explore for many years and cruising the river enabled me to reach remote villages and wildlife parks not otherwise easily reached and to see them from a different perspective. The MV Marahabaahu is a charming ship combining most 21st century needs with a subtle Indian character which I liked very much and think is what most people booking this type of holiday want. The Cruise Director, Neena, did an excellent job - including taking early morning yoga classes which those who attended thoroughly enjoyed. PK, who led the excursions was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, preparing us for the next day with advice and photos/videos of what we were likely to see. The staff accompanying us on wildlife excursions were quite amazing in their ability to spot and identify birds and animals that few of us had any idea were there which added greatly to our enjoyment. All the crew were outstanding, anticipating our needs with courtesy and genuine smiles. Looking back, I think my favourite experience was the very last afternoon when a few of us walked along the ghat for a couple of hours with Sandip. The sense of peace and tranquillity was so relaxing, there were a few families along the way, we saw some lovely birds and Sandip knew a great deal about the local agriculture. We felt we were in truly rural India and well off the usual tourist routes - just perfect! Read Less

Somewhere different to travel in India. The whole cruise from start to finish was EXCELLENT. The staff and crew couldn't do enough to ensure our comfort and overall experience. Cabin, food, service were all first class. All activities undertaken were well planned and most interesting. All visits to shore villages were well chosen and showed the local life. We would strongly recommend this cruise to our friends and we will now be able to tell them about all the wonderful experiences we had, travelling in such a unique ship. ALL the points listed above could be discussed in far greater length talking personally to other people. The cruise director Neena Morada, had a quiet rapport with all her staff and passengers alike. She hosted the passengers as if they were her personnel guests, in all this she was ably assisted by the Ships Purser, who in his turn, could not have done any more for us. Read Less

Myanmar was on the bucket list. True much of the country is still 3rd world but the cultural experience and friendly attitude of the people coupled with the luxury aboard ship made the entire experience worth while. Also don,t forget to bargain when purchasing tourist bits and pieces, its still the real deal there. The only warning to give is take care on various river disembarkations, but the crew do there most to ensure all is safe for passengers. There was a wide variety of shore excursions to choose from and moderate fitness was required, although with those not quite up to it every assistance was given to ensure they could enjoy experiences. Overall the cruise met all our expectations and we had researched it so we were aware of some challenges, for example onshore in some areas Asian toilets only available and of course drink , the supplied, bottled water. We have just returned from our 22 night Essence of Vietnam, Cambodia and Luxury Mekong tour. Have to say that we were a bit apprehensive as we are both 49 and reading reviews, most people are 60+. Don’t know why we wasted time worrying! All of the 22 people in our group (2 Canadians, 4 British and the rest Australian) were fantastic and up for a laugh! Nghia, our tour leader was with us from day 1 until we departed Cambodia, 22 days later! He was exceptional, knowledgeable, personable, great sense of humour, great stories, kept the group together, adapted schedules to suit our needs etc. We gave Nghia 20/10 on our review as he was the best tour leader EVER! Thank you for making our trip Nghia. He is passionate about what he does and does it superbly. All of the hotels we stayed in were exceptional, 5 stars the whole way. There wasn’t one thing in any of them that we can give any constructive feedback on. And they were so well chosen by Scenic as they were all in the centre of everywhere and short walks to restaurants and shops etc. The Au Co ship on Halong bay was the best on the Bay! Beautiful ship, great staff, great food and great excursions. All of the side trips, Scenic Freechoice, wherever we went, were educational, fun and well paced. The Scenic Spirit ship was out of this world. Amazing food, thank you “King” Solomon and team! Service from bar staff, Rasmey etc was exceptional. Cleanliness of the ship was exemplar and our room was always clean and inviting. Chantal, our cruise director, was amazing, personable, approachable, accommodating and has a great sense of humour. We did so much, both on and off the ship, but never felt rushed or compelled to partake. If you want to experience off the beaten track Vietnam and Cambodia, in style, go Scenic! We have so many great memories (and thousands of photos to still sort through) of this trip, will definitely travel with Scenic again. There is no way that we would have experienced and seen all that we did if we had organised this trip independently. Outstanding service, exceptional staff and worth every cent. Keep up the great work Scenic team. Will be recommending Scenic to all our family and friends, wherever they want to go in the world! Read Less

It is hard to find the right words to describe how wonderful it was. Pure luxury, most friendly and helpful staff, very clean cabins and decks, quiet, fantastic interior design all over the ship, food and beverage first class, nice and spacious cabins and very interesting excursions to temples and cultural highlights along the Irawady river. It simply could not be any better and I can highly recommend this cruise (Bagan-Mandaly and/or back). When I boarded the ship, the handle of my travel bag was broken, they immediately offered to fix it and they repaired it perfectly. This special cruise was a theme cruise with the Orchestre de Paris, another highlight ! Our fellow passengers were very nice and pleasant ladies and gentlemen from all over Europe and the world. My sincere thanks to the crew, to Helen and Neville, to Barthelmy, the captain and the many more wonderful members, who did everything possible to make this trip a very memorable and wonderful experience to the guests. We chose this cruise because we had been informed by a man writing a book on the best river cruises in the world, that Vietnam/Cambodia was #1. We have been on over 25 cruises, ocean and river, and never have we experienced better service and caring for passengers. Top-notch crew. An all-inclusive cruise so if we wanted food or wine delivered to our room, it was included in the booking price. No tipping was expected. The choices of excursions were varied and interesting. The local guides were well-chosen. The ship had only 36 passengers so the experience was intimate and the boat easy to navigate. The clientele on this particular trip was primarily Australian and north American. The front desk, the chef and staff, and the guides could not have more accommodating. We felt safe and well-cared for at all times. The only disappointment was my own fault. I thought the Mekong River looked like Halong Bay in northern Vietnam. If I did the trip again, we would start in Hanoi and end in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It would add a few days to the two-week trip but it would have been worth it. I would highly suggest ending the trip in Siem Reap on this cruise because of the farewell dinner at an ancient temple which was a pinnacle experience. We will travel with Scenic Cruises again soon, if so fortunate. Outstanding crew and overall experience. Read Less

Our travel group, not affiliated with Uniworld, consisted of 3 universities and Smithsonian Travel boarded the Mekong Navigator after our 3 day stay in HCMC. Since we would be 7 days on board, I was hoping for the best. It turned out that my expectations were greatly exceeded. The first good sign was the boat had very high end finishes. Immediately I found the Cambodian crew to be smiling and anxious to please, certainly a rarity today. Our precious butler, Samoun, was always looking after us like on the first tour day he delivered our forgotten tour radios before we disembarked. We were greeted every day from the dining room to the bar/loung with lovely attentive service. Our creature comforts were well taken care of by a comfortable cabin, spacious bath and inviting outdoor & indoor seating areas. But the real outstanding feature of the boat was the fabulous food service. I happened on the director and the chef one day at the lunch buffet and told them the food quality was as good as our favorite Crystal Serenity. The director understood the praise but said his young Cambodian chef would not get the comparison. If you are lucky enough to be able to visit this fascinating and authentic part of our world, I hope you have the privilege of being on this outstanding river cruise boat. Read Less

This cruise went from Vietnam through Cambodia back into Vietnam. The accommodations in all 3 places were stellar and the ship itself was very lovely, comfortable and afforded privacy as well as good mingling places. The food was very good, the staff attentive and congenial. The tours themselves were interesting and appropriately timed, not too short but not rushed. We visited places I would not only not have gone, but could not have gone. There was a good mix of history, culture, fun and entertainment. The tour guides were knowledgeable and attentive to any issues. The staff was attentive to physical needs, comfort and individuals. The places we ate out at were very nice and the food was very good. The buses were comfortable and the guides filled the time with interesting information. I also did the Ha Long Bay add on which was the right amount of time. The bay is beautiful albeit busy with other boats, but did not feel crowded. The boat we had was brand new and gorgeous. The staff there was also kind and attentive. The wife and I chose to celebrate our 60th birthdays and my retirement on the Strand Cruise. It had been a long held ambition to see Burmese life from the river. Everything about the trip was simply superb. The boat is new and luxurious. Its one of the few that has a swimming pool which was an ideal location for many cold beers. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The crew always had a smile and genuinely seemed to enjoy what they were doing. The food was a mix of international and local cuisine and everything we ate ranging from lobster to fois gras ravioli was exquisite. The cabins were larger than expected and bigger than many hotel rooms I have stayed in with full height windows to watch the world go by. The excursions and the activities organised provided fantastic vignettes of everything that Burma has to offer without us having to organise a thing. My only regret is that we chose the 3 night cruise rather than the 4 night one. Strongly recommended. Read Less

Scenic Luxury Cruises are exactly that - All the visits ashore were very well organised with local guides who were passionate about their country, both in Vietnam and Cambodia. The holiday started with a couple of days in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in a central 5 star hotel - it included meals out with a small group (about18) and the highlight was a gastronomic tour of three local restaurants, with transport between stops was sitting on the back of a vintage Vespa Scooter. We transferred to the ship, to be greeted by all the crew - the luggage was already in the cabin and our Butler was on hand to get anything that we required. On the cruise, Scenic offered opportunities and experiences which are not available to other travellers. There was a trip ashore on most days, but these were not strenuous and helped to enrich our knowledge of these two fascinating countries. Yes, seeing the aftermath of the Vietnam War was not "fun" but it was interesting and experiencing the horrendous "Killing Fields" of the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia was truly emotional. But this is recent history - of our lifetime and cannot be ignored. The visits to the temples of Angkor Wat was the main reason for the holiday and did not dissapoint. The smaller temples were very crowded with scores of Chinese visitors, but there is a lot more space in the main temple complex. Scenic organised a final dinner at a temple in the grounds of Angkor Wat, just for 50 people, with entertainment throughout. It was unforgetable - a magical experience. Read Less

We also flew to inle lake for 4 nights ( which is another incredible stop) and felt very safe the entire trip. While there you see no evidence of any issues and not going only hurts the local people. Can't speak highly enough of the whole experience aboard the Avalon Myanmar cruising the Irrawaddy river, not forgetting the 2 days in the capital Yangon pre -cruise. Myanmar is a fascinating country as yet almost untouched by tourism, and seeing it from the river stopping every day at villages and towns is a great way to get close to Burmese life. The excursions were well planned and varied, but you do need to be mobile and able to walk distances as well as negotiating river banks which are mostly without steps. The cruise director, the local guide, who stayed with the cruise throughout, and the ship's crew were all excellent and the Burmese people in the countryside are just delightful. The accommodation and food exceeded our expectations, and the small passenger capacity ensures a family like feeling within a few days. We were all good friends by the end of the journey.
