We chose this cruise for its itinerary having sailed from Dubai to Cape Town via East Africa with Regent three years ago (a cruise which rated as one of the best we have ever done). A bonus was a chance to sail on the Explorer. We chose the pre-cruise experience on offer in Lisbon as the post cruise with a Safari meant coming home on Christmas Day! Pre-Cruise - Lapa Palace - good hotel but too far out of town and no good bars or restaurants nearby. Also, the buses couldn't get to it causing problems for excursions and transfer to boat. Not well organised. the second excursion was a disaster! Sintra was vaguely interesting but poor organisation meant a mile walk for coffee, loads of food which no one wanted and long delays resulting in lunch not arriving until well into the afternoon. The transfer to the boat was also poor. This is not the first time we have felt that Regent need to vet the pre and post tour operators more carefully. Initially the Explorer is much more impressive than any of the other three Regent ships despite their valiant attempts to upgrade them to match. You do feel this is luxury. Sadly, the ship did not live up to expectations. Suite, service and food were good, but lack of outside space spoilt the voyage. Very lush inside but if you wanted to sit outside it was a sunbed or one of ten or so seats at the pool bar. We enjoy sitting on deck during the morning and early evening with a coffee or drink. There is nowhere to do this other than the very limited seating round the pool bar which does not get the sun. Eating on the balcony of Veranda was good when the weather was fine, and it was open, but it shut for three days with no good explanation given! Something to do with a crew member getting bitten we heard eventually. Strange because we never saw an insect on the boat! The Pool Grill is mainly covered in. It was good to see they have got rid of the sauce bottles and some of the food was very good e.g. prawn skewers but the main choice was largely burgers (we don't consider that five-star luxury) and the whole place in our view resembles a diner. We did appreciate the speciality restaurants opening at lunchtime. The itinerary was as expected but not as interesting as East Africa, partly because the ports had little to offer (not Regent's fault). Destination Services did a good job in a difficult part of the world and we enjoyed the excursions. We were, however, disappointed not to go to Togo. Togo was taken out at what was said to be the last minute with no alternative provided. There has been unrest in Togo for a considerable time and with elections coming up on the 20th December this was clearly unlikely to abate. Regent are risk adverse at the best of times (which I understand although I do not necessarily agree with decisions) so it would seem clear that the chances of going to this port were slim. If indeed this was a last-minute decision, as said, then I agree it would be difficult to provide an alternative. However, the decision not to go should have been taken much earlier and provision other than sailing around the Atlantic in a circle made! Sao Tome early and Walvis for two nights perhaps. We choose cruises for the itinerary and while we are aware that ports may be omitted it appears to be quite a regular occurrence with Regent (more than with say Silversea or Seabourn). Entertainment was similar to other Regent Cruises - we don't generally participate in this and find daytime activities very uninteresting unless an early show is put on. Sally Jones was good, as usual and we appreciated her re-arranging her show due to illness. We did feel that there was an overemphasis on the classical pianist. It would be nice to see something other than Trivia, cooking demonstrations and bingo. Disembarkation in Cape Town was efficient, and the City tour we booked to fill the time before the flight good. Overall a good cruise but not one of Regent’s best. Read Less

We had booked a suite high and forward to limit the effects of the vibrations, i was surprised, not bad at all. The ship is smaller so it took me a while to get adjusted to the ceiling height and general smallness of the ship, it needs refreshing and i heard it was due in the near future. The smaller ship gives you a more intimacy feeling. The stewardess were as usual amazing , always smiling and they have the worst job, cleaning up after us. There was a small decrease in quality of the service especially on the veranda. Maybe a very small decrease in the number of staffs The food was very good with a few hiccups, soufflé's are basically warm cake, good but not a soufflé , the pastry/croissant were not as flaky as in the other ships, the french baguette was amazing, the selection of cheeses was very limited, every day i saw the blue cheese, there is thousand of cheeses in the world , could have been better, the food was very good in general The excursions were fine, the buses 70% of them were uncomfortable if you were unlucky on being the last ones on the small bus, you were stuck over the wheel with your knees in your face. The organization for the excursions , checking in was bad, especially when the others ships have a different system, you come in, checkin, they give you a number then you sit until your number is called, here everybody would line up until they called your excursion number, and you do not want to be the last ones on the bus, so most people are standing to get their buses tickets Tenders , especially the first one was horrid , they picked up on it and got better. We missed the meeting of the waters, the negro river and amazon because the ship was late leaving the port by one hour, got too dark, i blame the captain, he should have been more organized or in the morning announce the event by speaker. Overall, a good trip, what made the difference was the speaker Terry Green, she made this cruise, she was terrific , and reading the river of doubt , which narrates the expedition of Teddy Roosevelt down the amazon was also very helpful. The cruise director Andy is terrific as are all of the crew, always smiling and greeting you. Read Less

The embarkation was very quick and we were on the ship in minutes.We really enjoyed ourselves even though unfortantly we missed a couple of ports because of the weather.We were busy all the time with several wonderful lectures from Terry and Adam,drinking and eating too much and the entertainment on the ship was wonderful. David Niven was not only a hard working wonderful cruise director but put on a show that brought down the house. The cabin was excellent and really even though we had a butler it really was not necessary the food in Compass Rose was very good and if I had a complaint some of the food was warm not hot when I got it. Chartuse was nice but their menu was limited but dover sole was delicious Prime 7 was wonderful and anything on the menu was outstanding would go on a Regent cruise again for sure Read Less

Third time on the Voyager, and sixth sailing RSSC. Good news: the regular cabins are still great; house keeping still strong and service oriented; refurb quite good; great menus in the restaurants; alhough food is very good, quality no longer outstanding, and quite inconsistent; service WAY BELOW standards we always loved. Never had to ask for coffee, water and beverages in the past —— this time it was the norm. Wifi was the WORST! Regent probably had no choice but to give it for free. Been involved in mergers and acquisitions —— understand how new owners assume that they can operate the new acquisitions better and more economically than previous owners. In my opinion NCL either reduced F and B staffing or have new members that are not well trained. Captain and crew did a great job navigating the storm! Felt sorry for the room service waiters —— they really had a workout! Took our first Crystal cruse last year. Other than cabin size, service and food was superior. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and wanted to have a special event. We had never sailed on a luxury cruise before, and Regent seemed to be the all around best. Mostly it was, but there were some issues. STAFF: Wonderful! Did not meet a single person who was not helpful, friendly and personable. They were all an amazing group. CABIN: Were pleased with the cabin and especially the walk-in closet. Could not get the tub to work. The shower temperature was either cold, lukewarm or super hot. The thermostat for our cabin did not work; the temperature was arctic and I was in sweaters and using the extra blankets. After a week and a half it was fixed. I was surprised by how small the veranda was. The bed was very comfortable. One evening the power to the bathroom and walk-in closet went out. It wasn't fixed until mid morning the next day. EXCURSIONS: Couldn't ask for more choices. The excursion staff ran things very smoothly. MAINTENANCE: The ship had several problems, in addition to the items mentioned above. Our corridor had a water leak. One of the main lounges had a persistent water leak and could not be totally used. FOOD: Overall, our favorite restaurant was the main dining room, Compass Rose. They had a nice standard menu and an interesting special menu each evening. I was very disappointed in the "premiere" restaurant, Prime 7. I was really looking forward to the king crab legs. They were in a huge pile and mostly not legs. Bland. On another evening I ordered prime rib and it was too tough to cut. The afternoon tea event was awesome - really spectacular offerings. The ship barbecue was good. I loved the small ship size which led to making some nice friends. But given some of the problems we experienced, I did feel disappointed that the whole trip wasn't top notch. Read Less

Our only previous OCEAN cruise was 20+ yrs ago, on a much larger ship. While we enjoyed a Viking River cruise several yrs ago, we had decided ocean cruises were not for us. We agreed to take this cruise because (1) smaller ship (2) traveling w/ 3 other couples (3) everything included. We were not disappointed. Everything was great about the cruise - staff professional and available, laundry service, air travel Regent booked, our cabin (the closet w/ built-in drawers) & abundance our US outlets, well organized excursions. Disappointments: food not as good as Viking (however good selection and not too salty) and 1 of our included excursions was a waste. I believe the fault lies with the guide. A friend we were traveling w/ booked a private guide/van for our day in Rome. Very wise decision. We would book w/ Regent again. (Happy we booked thru Costco). Can't comment on entertainment or activities as we didn't have time for any of that! Ship was clean, well maintained and had attractive decor. I took too many "nice" outfits for evening and attribute that to my lack of understanding what to expect. Read Less

the ship was very good, and we especially enjoyed the quality of the food in the main dining room. The weather, less so. We boarded in 80 knot winds (really) that tore an Azamara ship off its moorings that almost struck us. Our cabin was spacious, and the closet space was a pleasant surprise. They have an Illy coffee maker, and should put out instructions to avoid messing it up the first few times you try. We only went to two of the shows (all shows are at 9:30 except the crew show on the last night; perhaps they might consider a 7:00pm show once or twice for those of us who wanted to eat later or earlier. Re shore excursions, they also need to ensure they put out maps for the day's location every day. It was missing most days, and would be useful. The fitness center was better than anticipated; they have water and Gatorade in the room, too. The machines are set to stop every 25 minutes, so you have to re-start it if you go longer. The weight machines are great, free weights up to 50 pounds, too. We wound up in port an added day due to high seas, missing our first stop as a result. We also couldn't dock in Monte Carlo due to dock damage there, so we were schlepped by bus for 3 hours from Marseilles. Not the ship's fault, but no rest for the weary at the end... Shore excursions were generally good to very good. We did Florence on our own, using the ship's "on your own" tour. They stopped at a leather factory, and also at a view overlook, which really cut into our time. If they had advised ahead of time what our arrival time in Florence would have been, we could have avoided sprinting to our assigned time at one of the galleries. The Monserrat optional tour was great (if you don't like steep, winding roads, be cautious) especially the lunch buffet on the way back. One of the best buffets I've had (and that's saying a lot). We chose this cruise to visit ports that we had not been to and to see the fall colors. Because we live in Florida, we had forgotten how cold and rainy it gets this time of year. Of course the cruise company does NOT have control of those elements. This is our first cruise since I joined cruise Critics. I did not know how to contact the other members for the meet and mingle events, therefore we did not participate. We have another Regent cruise beginningin January and hope to understand the process better. The service and food were both excellent. Compass Rose has such a diverse menu with excellent selections. The talent that I watched, the Regent Production team put on excellent shows. We played trivia most days and had fun meeting other guests and trying to come up with the correct answers. We really liked the size of the ship and the easy of getting around. Our butler and room steward were both 5 star. We believe the excursions that Regent includes are every bit as good or many times better that we pay extra for on other cruise lines. We had a great trip. Read Less

Although I had sworn I would not sail Regent again after a terrible experience a few years back on Mariner (Istanbul-Istanbul), I was tempted by the new ship, positive comments by other cruisers and a convenient itinerary in the Med. A good price didn't hurt either! By way of background, we are regular cruisers on Seabourn (Gold) and Hapag-Lloyd Europa Gold), as well as 3 Crystal cruises (Silver (including their Yacht) and 1 Oceania Marina cruise. We are Silver on Regent. We were blown away by the pre-cruise transfers and hotel. Everything went super smoothly - plenty of staff available, private water taxi to Hotel Danieli in Venice, private water taxi to ship the next day. Air (inc. a deviation in Barcelona where we stayed longer) also very seamlessly handled. The Explorer is a beautiful ship, well laid out and with plenty of space. Although the ship was full, it never felt that way. We loved our PH (1408) - great location - and we got an excellent butler (Vinit). That is not always a given, believe me. I thought the hallway entry way space was not efficiently utilized though - a place to hang coats would be nice. Service was wonderful: consistently personable, always with a smile, attentive. They had plenty of staff, so we never waited in any of our dining venues, even when Compass Rose was full, especially after Captain's events, shows, etc. Never a problem. Dining: We were only able to secure 1 extra reservation (in Prime 7) in addition to the 3 allowed. Food was a disappointment for us. Nothing drastically wrong, just uninspired. Dishes sounded wonderful on paper, but really didn't deliver on the plate. Pacific Rim, which we really were looking forward to, was pretty watered down Asian cuisine. There were a few stand-out dishes (Miso black cod for one) but the sides were generally bad: The fried vegetable rice and the stir fried noodles (both recommended by our server) were gummy and inedible. We liked Chartreuse, Prime 7 was also fine. Compass Rose did better with standard items than adventurous ones, so if you're a steak/lobster/shrimp/repeat kind of person, I think you would be happy. Big negative for us: The wine. The first time in all my cruises, and I do mean all, that I was unsuccessful in obtaining a list (even hand written) of what complimentary wines they had. I asked our butler, our servers, every sommelier, including the head sommelier. What is important to me, as a trained Court of Masters Sommelier, is which winery the wine comes from. The 'somms' and servers I think are trained to stick to their story and not offer additional information. If you find out on your own, then you can have them if you ask. (I saw an Oyster Bay SB and an Ancient Vines Zin, for example, on another table.) Even a mid cruise comment card, detailing my woes, brought no response. I do understand that for 90% (maybe more) of the passengers, those 2 offerings per night were just fine. We're not cocktail drinkers, although we tried a couple here and there. It seems the cocktails are more the focus than wine. Explorer has many lovely bar venues with a wide range of cocktails and high quality liquor available. Shore excursions were about what you would expect from included offerings: Buses, sometimes several going to the same spot, with about 30 people per bus. Tour guides were not very good, and I was reminded of why we book independent arrangements :-). We did pay for 1 tour (to Syracuse) and it was certainly not any better than the 'free' tours. Disembarkation went as smoothly as embarkation. To sum it up, while I overall still prefer SB and Hapag Lloyd and Crystal, I would cruise with Regent again on Explorer (and possibly new ship Ovation) if the itinerary and price were right. Wouldn't do over 14 days though - food and wine not good enough to stay longer. Read Less

This was our second time on the Voyager, again in the beautiful Med and although we had visited just about every port on our Monte Carlo to Venice journey many times before, we enjoyed the beauty and weather and culture of these very interesting areas and had a wonderful vacation. We found a great last minute offer and booked about one month prior to departure. Just like last year: the ship was in beautiful condition, our Concierge Suite (1018) was lovely and comfortable (although some extra storage areas would be appreciated), the cabin service was excellent, embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze, shore excursions were well organized (even if I still dislike daily bus tours) with lots of choice, the entertainment was still mediocre at best (like all small luxury ships), and the crew tried very hard and aimed to please. What was better than last year was, firstly, the service. While things seemed disorganized last year onboard, this year all staff members that we dealt with were engaged, happy and worked very hard to accommodate all of the passengers and their needs and wants. Bravo! All requests were handled efficiently and pleasantly, and, this year, there was no problem getting reservations at specialty restaurants - the staff worked with us and did what they could; that is all that one can ask. Secondly, we had such a strange experience with the food: the first couple nights of the cruise (French Restaurant and then Compass Rose) the dinners were terrible - totally unexpected: food delivered cold, under-cooked fish, scallops that tasted metallic, etc. This had nothing to do with our individual tastes, something was very wrong (we were a party of 4 and all of us agreed that there was a problem.) After the excellent deck Bar B Q, while having a drink at one of the bars, we ran into Danielle (the F&B Manager) and Maria (the Restaurant Manager) and very nicely told them our problems and, WOW, did they respond and turn things around. From that point forward, every meal was superb and they made sure that we were satisfied. It was amazing to see how much they cared about the product and were so concerned that 4 passengers (all of whom had been on Regent before) would be satisfied and enjoy the cuisine. It was an impressive and excellent display of service that we very much appreciated. We were on the cruise that had the mishap in Rome - yes, the ship banged into pier and took a bit of cosmetic damage but it was not the end of the world - the captain himself stated a few hours after the event that there was no mechanical damage. I don't think that the entire issue was well handled: there was a lack of information and disclosure by senior crew, we needlessly missed a port of call because we spent a night in Rome for no good reason (all of the other cruise liners were coming and going), and the words: "sorry for the inconvenience" only go so far. Regent could have done far better. It was a shame that we missed one of the highlights of the cruise: Sorrento (or Naples) for Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, etc,. No one would have minded if the itinerary was juggled and we missed Corfu, for example. We are loyal Silversea cruisers (looking forward to Australia in January on the Muse) but we also like the Regent. We honestly prefer the Silversea product - our opinion is that its a bit more polished and refined and the included shore excursions on Regent are not a big plus for us. That being said, at the end, most cruise choices are about a balance between product, price and itinerary and we certainly would cruise with Regent in the future. Read Less

My family (which includes two teenagers) wanted to take a summer vacation in Alaska. The date of this cruise along with the size and luxury of the boat fit the ticket for us and that's how we chose the RSSC Mariner. We booked the cruise directly with RSSC. I found our travel agent at RSSC to be very easy to work with. My only complaint with RSSC was several of the excursions that we would have enjoyed had been booked prior to our booking the trip and some of the excursions were just OK (that is the reason for the 4 star vs 5 star). Perhaps it was bad choosing on our part. We would have enjoyed having more flexibility with the excursions. But perhaps that is an impossibility in the nature of cruising - we were new to cruising. The food on the boat was excellent and my kids require gluten free diets which the culinary staff was amazing, They had wanted us to pre-order our gluten free meals ahead of time however many times my kids decided what they wanted at the meals and they couldn't have been more flexible. The complete staff on board could not have been more welcoming. There was a youth club - but my kids weren't interested in joining. There was a great game room with lots of games that we were able to use anywhere on board and a pool. We were lucky with wonderful weather and the pool deck was used often. Our room was very nice and the housekeeping staff was wonderful. The fitness facility was small and we did have to wait for treadmill/elliptical when we went. The spa was nice - we enjoyed massages and a manicure for me. The on board entertainment was enjoyable. We needed to see the doctor (for pink eye) that was contracted before cruising for medication and the medical facility/doctor/nurse were wonderful. I would highly recommend cruising with RSSC - but do some homework on the excursions! Read Less

We booked an Alaska cruise only three weeks out!!! George Ramos was our booking agent and he was fantastic. He really worked hard for us on the airline arrangements, and we could not have asked for more. The cruise was just for my wife and I. We have cruised before on Seabourn and NCL. Overall we were really happy. They really do include almost everything in the price and that makes this style of cruising very relaxing. We booked into a Penthouse A suite on Deck 11. Check-in and boarding were pretty smooth. It did not quite have the personalized touch that Seaborn did with someone waiting for you in your room, but our Butler, Bejoy, was amazing. He really could not have been nicer or more competent. The room was very spacious, well-kept, and in good shape. The included excursions were really good. We just stuck with those. You have to pay an upcharge for some of the more high-end ones. The included wi-fi was a really nice perk. The one disappointment was the food. Granted my wife and I are pretty spoiled / lucky, but I just felt the food was a notch below where it should have been. There were some standouts like the king crab legs in Prime 7 and the filet / tenderlon was always good. But in general, although it all looked good on the menu, it just fell short. The foie gras (which I had twice) was well-cooked, but just completely bland. Same with the schnitzel one night. I had a porterhouse in Prime 7 and it was tasty but maybe just a 1/2 inch thick. Other examples would be the brussel sprouts in Compass Rose which were just served steamed with zero seasoning, a lobster bisque which was incredibly thin, or the lobster tails which always looked like they'd been under the heat lamp for a bit too long. I think we had our best experiences at Sette Mari with Efrem as our server. We were able to order canapes in our room but the timing (5-7) put it too close to dinner for us and the selection didn't vary and was kind of so-so. Enough on the food! We do enjoy wine and we found the selection included to be fine with us. Decent selection and all pretty good. We ordered a bottle of Groth one night and IMO they offer you these extra-cost wines at below-market prices (plus no tax and tip on them). We went to the show almost every night. They were very well done. One thing I noted though was there there was very little diversity in the cast, and that's not something I normally notice. As far as the clientele, it was mostly English-speaking. There were a number of kids on board (I think over 100!) and a number of multi-generational groups travelling together. I did notice that the ship never really felt crowded though. You could almost always get a seat at whatever bar, lounge, or restaurant you wanted. (Exceptions were Prime 7 and Chartreuse, but that's to be expected.) All in all, this was a five-star cruise that I think was let down by the quality of the dining experience. And even then, the menu, the setting, and the service were all great, it just came down to some pretty bland dishes from the kitchen. We would do Regency again if the schedule drove us there (like this time), but may try Seabourn again or Crystal next time. Read Less

We had wanted to try a Regent cruise for a long time and had actually booked one in 2011 but I ended up in the hospital and we had to cancel. So when we decided on a British Islands trip we decided that this was the one to fulfill that long postponed desire. We went with the concierge suite for the extra hotel day in Reykjavik which we did enjoy ( although the excursion we went on was longer than I had anticipated and we ended being up for about 40 hours before hitting the sack that night). The suite was spacious, our steward was very attentive but the bed was higher in the middle than at the edges so sleeping was an adventure every night. For a luxury cruise line the tv entertainment was the most limited that we had on any of our cruises (this was our ninth) and soon got boring. We were used to larger ships so this was something new to us - a ship that had almost as many crew members as passengers. The service was great from the bar staff to the dining room staff to our room steward. We soon got to know the names of many of them and they remembered us as well. The food was very tasty but aside from the everyday choices the daily specials were limited - more so than on some other cruise lines. I was particularly disappointed in the lobster. Good lobster has a sweet flavor with a soft texture when prepared well - the two times I had it on this cruise failed on both criteria. It had little flavor and was a little tough - very discouraging. That was balanced out by some different takes on staples like onion soup. A redeeming factor for meals was the buffet - they did have a small but varied selection that was different and, at times, more exotic than on other cruises we had been on. We did a considerable amount of research for our Alaskan cruise before choosing the Seven Seas Mariner. The ship presents itself with such class and attention to every detail.The embarkation was organised and stress free. The suite was more than we expected for three of us ( our adult daughter shared the suite with us in the ‘lounge area’ of the suite. The bathroom was a good size with lovely complimentary toiletries and shower over bath. The staff were friendly and we were greeted several times a day by a sunny smile and a good morning or good afternoon or good evening. The lectures were informative and offered a good entry level into learning about Alaska. The evening shows were relaxed and entertaining. All of the restaurants offered a wide choice. We ate at Chartreuse several evenings where the food was beautifully presented and delicious. The other à la carte restaurants we enjoyed were Prime 7 and Compass Rose all of which were exceptional. We enjoyed breakfast at La Verenda where it was self - service. We also enjoyed lunches at Coffee Connections where there was a wide range of light snacks to choose from. Had there not been Gastrointestinal infection on the ship it would have been perfect. Because of this, all the self service laundries were locked and were not made available for the balance of our cruise - 6 days. We were not offered a complimentry laundering service and when asked were told that we would have to pay. I felt that we could have had a bit of help in this regard as after all we had paid for a commodity and there wasn’t any option offered to us. Other than this, it was amazing. The best part was not having to pay for your meals, drinks, and tips in the ‘all inclusive’ fee structure. Looking forward to our next cruise with Seven Seas. Read Less

Most times it was either so slow or not available definitely not a good experience The crew excellent the food especially the new Compass Rose menu was perfect The complimentary laundry was another disappointment why not extend the hours? The big negative was our disembarking in New York The process was smooth until you left the terminal # 88 not a Regent representative in sight Carnival reps directed us to our bus area Then the fun began I was group grey 3 The buses for grey 1 & 2 were there (for 40 minuets) finally our bus to JFK arrived loaded and left my flight was departing at 1: 00 pm the driver enters the airport at 11:35 am dros off some at Delta then drives out of the airport and come back in. He stopped the bus at a traffic signal leaves to get directions! 4 of us got out opened the luggage compartment retrieved our 8 bags and walked to our terminal we got there at 12:16 I think Regent should look at Academy Bus Co and maybe don’t use a low bidder shameful for my wife and I to unload our bags and run to the terminal I did write a note to Regent with no response I guess now that Norwegian owns them it will go down hill from here! I wanted a daylight transit of the canal.That was great! The ship skipped 2 ports... Nicaragua and Guatamala...no compensation for that. I was disappointed that coming back to New York we passed the Statue of liberty at 4AM so I missed that and I was so much looking forward to it. The officers were invisible. I saw the captain only once the whole trip. Ray was a great cruise director. Some of the entertainment was very good. The bridge lessons were very helpful...Judy was terrific. Despite the long voyage and good food I managed to lose weight! That was a shock! I ate a lot of fruit. Maybe that is the secret. I will probably try another ship for my next cruise. The Navigator is getting tired. Meeting people from all over the world is the best part of any cruise. I have many new friends from Europe and Australia. Read Less

I should start by saying that this is my first cruise experience. We booked using a travel agent. We had the following requirements: great food, not a lot of kids, and not a "party" boat. This cruise definitely checked all the boxes for us! Cabin:We upgraded to a concierge Suite on the 10th floor. It was so spacious. We had a king size bed, walk in closet and even a sitting area. We had a bathtub with wonderful Loccitane products as well and even a balcony with enough room to have two chairs and a small table. Dining: The food was fabulous! We ate at all the options that they had! The pool bar had burgers, etc. Prime 7 has steaks and seafood. Compass Rose is open Breakfast lunch and dinner and has a great variety. And Sierra Mar ( My favorite) is italian and Chartreuse is French. I HIGHLY recommend making dinner reservations at Prime 7 and Chartreuse. These did book up on our 7 day cruise and the others are first come first served. ALL THE FOOD AND DRINKS were included. Not just the beer and wine but everything! Service: This was unlike anything I have experienced. Everyone that works for this ship is very nice and so accommodating. Pretty much anything that I asked for, they would make happen. For instance, we had a steward named Gregory that we met on the first day. He asked if there was anything that we needed for our room or mini bar. I asked for wine for the mini bar and he even asked what kind that I preferred and made sure that the mini bar was stocked with my favorite wine the whole trip. This was a nice touch. Ship: Was very clean, and very well appointed. It had a luxurious feel without feeling stuffy. Shore excursions: We did the Bering Sea- Crab Fishermans Tour in Ketchikan. I would HIGHLY recommend this! It was one of my favorite excursions that we did!!! Very informative and it was interesting to see what the day and the life of a crab fisherman would be like. We also got to see A LOT of bald eagles! Mendenhall Glacier and whale Quest in Juneau. Very fun! We got some great pics of the glacier and it was a beautiful day so it was nice to be on the water. We didn't get to see a lot of whales though. Venture to Glacer Point was amazing but I wouldn't not recommend to someone who doesn't like to walk a lot. It is a pretty far walk to the Glacier after the canoe ride but for myself who likes this, it was great! It was really cool to be soo close to the glacier. The Sea otters, Raptors and Bears, in Sitka was a little disappointing. We thought it was a little more like seeing Bears and Eagles in the natural habitat but it was more like visiting a zoo. We did see Sea Otters but couldn't get close enough to get good pictures. I do have to make clear that ALL the excursions were NOT free. There are a lot that are but those ones didn't really appeal to us. We were given a discounted rate but still, that was a little misleading. Overall, this was a great experience! It was an expensive cruise, but we felt that it was worth every penny! We are already looking forward to booking another cruise with Regent! Read Less

We did the Barcelona-to-Rome cruise leaving Barcelona April 2018 and had a great time. The room sizes are far better than any others we have seen, and include a walk-in closet and spacious bathroom--not amenities you normally find on a cruise ship. The public areas, bars, pool area were all great, and I particularly liked the health club on the 6th floor. In addition, Regent's arrival (at the airport) and departure experiences were really well done. We had been on a river cruise with AMA in 2017 and went on this cruise with a couple who had been on a different AMA river cruise last year. All of us thought that Regent's food, while OK, did not match AMA. Maybe that reflects preparing food for 750 versus 140, but anyway that's our view. The three specialty restaurants on the Regent Explorer were quite good, although again my wife and I thought our one dinner at the AMA "Captain's Table" was even more special. We thought the tours were generally pretty good, but there were two occasions where tours included stops at facilities that were just attempts to sell stuff to folks on the tour. One on Mallorca took the group quite a long way to a rather worthless tour of a synthetic pearl factory, ending with too much free time in the factory's gift shop. Then we had a tour to that began in the little French village of Eze, which is a fantastic place, and ended in Monaco, which is also well worth seeing. But stuck between them was a tour of a perfume factory, again dumping you in their showroom at the end, and providing more time than necessary. Regent should delete the commercial stops from their tours, in my view. Those are my suggestions for improvement; overall it was a great time and the experience generally matched up with the premium price Regent commands. We would probably sail with them again and are considering a Baltic cruise in a year or two. Read Less

WE chose this cruise to celebrate a special birthday and because we only had to fly one way! We flew to Barcelona and Regent put us up at the Hilton which was a very nice modern hotel. We only stayed one night and were taken to the ship which had come from a 3 week refurbishment in Marseilles. We had only sailed Regent once (on the Navigator) and we were not fond of that ship. The Mariner was beautiful. There were still small touches that needed to be finished (maintenance men came in our suite a couple of times to do work) We visited Malaga and Cartegena Spain and Funchal in the Canary Islands. We took tours provided by the ship and they were fine. The dining experiences were very good. One could indulge in myriads of offerings. The "every night offerings" in Compass Rose included Dover Sole, Maine Lobster, lamb chops, steaks. Specials each night were also offered. Prime 7 and Chartreuse were elegant and the food was presented beautifully. We ate in the Veranda for breakfast and lunch and there were different offerings for lunch every day including themed lunches (Indian, Asian, Mexican). Serena, our captain was excellent and very personable. On the last night before the crossing she skirted a storm by going 150 miles out of the way to give us a pleasant dinner and show. Then the rocking and rolling started and continued for most of the journey to Bermuda. It made for unpleasant sailing and the wind and chill prevented outdoor activities and even sitting on the balcony. We had one very good speaker until we got to Bermuda. He talked about disasters and how he was part of the teams sent to disaster areas by the government. He also had climbed every mountain and showed many pictures and was very enjoyed as he commanded a large audience. We are long time Seabourn cruisers and are used to more personal attention than we received on Regent. Kumar, our butler went above and beyond to please us. We are taking the Mariner again in September from Vancouver back to Miami with 4 ports in Alaska. We also booked a 2020 cruise on the new Splendor now being constructed. Really a 4.5. Embarkation in Miami extremely easy especially if you were in one of the larger suites like we were--a Master Suite. But really it was only the difference between no wait and at most a 3-4 minute wait, there were over 15 agents taking care of the formalities. One unusual thing--first time ever in 2+ cruises that we were allowed to keep our passports. Ship itself is gorgeous--still has that new ship smell :). It's subjective, but it may live up to the "most luxurious cruise ship" tag from Frank del Rio. Master suite was very good with a couple of flaws that made us wonder if Frank had ever examined it personally. First,the living room couch was quite possibly the least comfortable couch we have ever tried to sit in. Very low and hard back. They had put lots of cushions on it, but all that meant was if you tried to sit up in it or lean back to watch TV you slipped off. Only one arm chair so only one person at a time could be comfortable watching a movie. Also, couch set up far too close to the TV for comfortable viewing. Butler and stewards moved the couch for us about four feet back for a proper viewing distance. TVs themselves large and proper Hi-def feed of a large movie selection. However, seems like most cruise lines these days content themselves with MSNBC and Fox news so if you want anything in the middle you get BBC. Moreover no ESPN so only Sky Sports and if you have a 75%+ American clientele all soccer all the time isn't great especially during March Madness. The other cabin oddity was no fewer than 15 switches (in rows of 3) that do exactly the same thing. You can turn on or off all the lights in the foyer, living room, and dining area at once but can't choose any subset. I sincerely hope they fix both of those things in drydock. We did get a chance to see the famous $5K/day/person Regent Suite as we got invited to a small dinner party there. It is over-the-top with built in spa, the $75K bed (apparently the Splendor will have a $150K bed), lots of Lalique crystal, etc. Food was generally excellent at both lunch and dinner (we believe strongly in sleeping in on sea days especially when losing an hour most nights going eastward). Lots of lunch venues open, both buffet and sit down. We found the food considerably better than that we have had on the other Regent ships, particularly in the MDR. The new MDR menu provided a huge number of choices and quality didn't slip because of that variety. There is a Senior Executive Chef who reports directly to the GM instead of two a F and B manager--we met him on a galley tour and he is extremely impressive. Of the specialty restaurants, Pacific Rim is surprisingly good--I put it that way because we are from N. California so are Asian food snobs. There was excellent variety and quality and most of the dishes were reasonably authentic. Yes the bulgogi was really a nice sliced steak with a soy-based sauce instead of the true Korean item and they should train the wait staff to pronounce the iconic Vietnamese soup pho as "fuh" vs. "foe," and the menu should make it clear you can get both hot and cold sake (it only says cold but they were happy to serve hot at the proper temperature). But those are minor quibbles. I rate the quality about as good as the Nobu restaurant on Crystal with more choices and actually better than Jade Garden on Oceania (which is good, not just nearly as authentic). They push the lobster tempura (which is good), but be sure to try the duck, the pho, the miso cod, and the stir-fried greens, and the green tea ice cream among other dishes. Chartreuse was also excellent in all respects although selection a bit limited. Much better than the earlier Regent Signatures incarnation. The whole dover sole is particularly good. Prime 7 a bit disappointing actually, appetizers, sides, and desserts very good, but steaks only fair without a proper char and not as marbled as prime steaks should be. Seti Mari is still a confused concept. Is it a buffet or sit-down restaurant? The bit of both doesn't really work IMHO. Toscana on Oceania hugely better for Italian food as is Prego on Crystal. The baker on Explorer is really good-both for desserts in the restaurants and especially at afternoon tea. Entertainment generally good to excellent. Production company one of the better ones we've seen--rivaling Crystal in that regard. Guest entertainers mostly very good to excellent--a husband-wife pair called "Somewhere it's Five O'Clock" was new to us and did two shows with actual modern pop and rock music (and some classic rock too). (Although we may have been the only couple that recognized their opening song "Little Talks"--that's by Monsters and Men if it comes up on a ship trivia quiz). However, the guest comedian was something out of the Dean Martin era when joking about drunk drivers and the female anatomy was considered funny. Nowadays it's both sexist and offensive. That caused me to downgrade the entertainment rating one notch. Service top-notch in all respects from wait staff to cabin attendants/butlers to cruise director and his staff. If anything Regent may have gone overboard in responding to some earlier comments in this forum about slow or mediocre service, at one dinner we counted 8 times a waiter, head waiter, or maitre'd came over to ask if everything was excellent. I thought of putting up a sign that said "things are perfect." The only problem with our butler was that he made us feel guilty we didn't give him enough to do--I had to convince him we could find our way to dinner without him. Internet service only fair. Sort of OK for first half of cruise, then they had problems switching satellites in mid-Atlantic which led to 3 days of unusable service. Not a matter of too much simultaneous use--service terrible at 2am during that period. The similarly sized SIlversea Silver Muse with a comparable passenger load and "free" internet throughout had almost land-based speed on a crossing we did six months earlier. Speed these days is simply a matter of money and technical competence. Finally ports and excursions, a fairly minor part of a crossing and particularly true on this voyage. There were five port days scheduled and two+ got cancelled. The first day in Bermuda, while it was sunny, winds were up to 60 mph gusts. Some deck furniture that was not completely tied down literally flew off the ship. So almost all excursions that day were canceled. Unfortunately that meant that re-scheduling everyone on excursions the second day proved impossible. Our tour in Funchal was just ok--guide could have been a lot better. The tour of the Nerja caves near Malaga was spectacular. If you haven't seen them you really need to do so. Largest underground "theaters" I've ever seen and an excellent guide. And then came the unique-to-us part of the cruise. We were sailing from Malaga to our last port of Alicante before ending in Barcelona. Our captain woke us at 3:30am to tell us that the ship was going to be making some unusual turns because a passenger had gone overboard on the Norwegian Spirit which was just ahead of us. Five ships in the area including several from the Spanish Coast Guard and two helicopters spent six hours searching the area--the passenger, who it turns out had jumped overboard, was never found. We were released from the search, skipped Alicante, and had an extra sea day. Overall, this was a very good to excellent crossing aboard a superb ship that I believe will get even better when they fix a few glitches. Read Less

We chose this cruise because if was from Sydney to Bali via Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Cooktown, Darwin, Komodo and Bali. The ship was impressive. Cabin was excellent. All balcony ship. Bathroom was spacious and kept in good clean condition with lovely L'Occitane toiletries. It was all inclusive and the ships complimentary tours were good except for Bali. Unfortunately due to heavy traffic in Bali the 5.5 hour tour extended to 6.5 hours and 5 of those were spent on the bus sitting mostly in traffic. The tours in Australia were excellent and very enjoyable. We found the food plentiful and mostly excellent. Lobster tails, sea scallops, prawns, fillet steak,etc,etc were always on offer so there was always good choices available. The downside for us was the outside back deck for the Le Verandah restaurant. Very small area and lack of staff here made for an extremely poor eating experience. There was virtually no service in this area. I feel that spare cutlery should be made readily available both indoors and outdoors because once they remove your plate with your cutlery you could spend hours waiting for fresh cutlery especially outside. This happened to us. Also the drink waiters were lacking in Le Verandah. The general waiters would pour you a water but never ask if you required a further drink and it was hard to get a wine or other at times in there. Compass Rose was lovely but the service was hit and miss mostly. Staff need better training. Prime 7 a lot of huff and puff over nothing. Food better in Compass Rose. Chartreuse similar. Menu unexciting and hardly French food in my opinion. Again very disappointing. We visited each once and that was more than enough. The coffee area on Deck 5 was lovely. Plenty of areas to sit quietly. Afternoon tea in Horizon Lounge was lovely. The pool deck BBQs at lunch were a bit underwhelming. The ship ran out of Baileys, tomato juice and celery amongst many other items before we hit Darwin. Really? Not good enough for the prices they are charging. It is a beautiful ship and all inclusive and we did enjoy it throughly however for the price of sailing on this ship they need to lift their game in food service. Would I sail again. Mostly definitely but only at a price I would consider fair and reasonable. I feel it beats Silverseas hands down despite the issues we had with service. Read Less

We chose this cruise line upon advice of a travel agent and used it first in March of 2015 ( Navigator ). We felt guilty we were treated so well. the excursions and ports were all fantastic and we could not find enough time in the day to do or enjoy all the ship had to offer. The captain and many of the crew we recognized from the Navigator in 2015. That made us feel very confident. As with the previous cruise it was to celebrate our anniversary. In 2018 we sailed again, this time on the Explorer. It's a little bigger. The gym is definitely bigger and better. The restaurants all were great as well. Some of the docking was a bit inconvenient compared to previous trips. At Key West we docked opposite the main , downtown , area (less expensive docking fees? ) but we had a trolley take us to downtown. That particular shore excursion, "Discovering Key West" did not measure up. It was probably beyond Regent's control. We were supposed to visit an aquarium , a ship-wreck museum, and the tour of the town. The driver did an O.K. narrative but less than in 2015. When he dropped us off downtown, we, and many others asked about the ship-wreck museum and the aquarium. He responded by quickly stating it was included on our tickets but none of us EVER saw an aquarium ( it was at the other end of town ). The museum was an easy find. As with any cruise there's a few self-important, arrogant, haughty old idiots that think they're above everyone but the other 98% of those aboard were very unaffected and friendly. Overall, a pretty good trip and we'll do it again. Read Less

We chose this ship because it was the latest in the Regent line The ship itself is absolutely beautiful.The decor, the bathrooms, cabins, and dining rooms are superbly decorated. The speciality restaurants are glamorous and the food was what we would have expected. Great choices, wonderfully presented,and delicious. The only complaint here is that the Prime 7 and indeed all of them are difficult to get a booking. We had a Penthouse suite but even so we only managed to get in there once Our complaint was the Compass Rose. Not only was the food not up to standard but on the three occasions we ate in there, the service was poor and the food on each occasion was either cold or only lukewarm We shared a table on four occasions, all the people we shared with were delightful. On two occasions we actually all complained about the food and service to the staff, The last night of the cruise was exceptionally poor. The food took ages to come, our dining companions actually asked if the kitchen had lost our order. When my husband's steak came, it was only lukewarm and whilst waiting for his sauce to be brought, which seemed to be an afterthought, the steal went cold. While some of the staff are amazing, many in the Compass Rose seem to have a problem with the English language. Many seem very new so it's probably a training issue, and hopefully, they will improve. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We had a choice of Regent or their sister line, Oceania for the same itinerary. We decided to give Regent a try and we were very happy we did. We had sailed Oceania before and we found Regent and Oceania comparable in most ways. We also found the cost to be about the same when you add the things that are included on Regent to similar things at extra cost on Oceania. We also liked that business class air was available. The things that we found better on Regent than Oceania: Embarkation was smooth and simple. We disembarked independently and that went smoothly as well. Our Category G cabin was larger and the bathroom much nicer than the similar category on Oceania's small ships. The included excursions were not nearly as crowded as similar excursion either included or at cost on Oceania. Fewer people made for a more intimate and comfortable excursion experience. Also, the excursions seemed to be paced better for the audience. Food is comparable on both lines. Launderettes are free and busy but we never had a serious problem using them when they were open. The shore excursion organization on the Regent Mariner was much better organized and operated more smoothly than our last cruise on the Oceania Insignia last April/May. The one complaint many people had came during the time the ship was dealing with a gastroenteritis outbreak. The quarantine process was well run and the staff worked hard and contained the outbreak but the outbreak required the closing of the free launderettes for over a week. That made it difficult for those onboard that needed to wash clothes. A larger group of the passengers felt like the ship should have offered free laundry during that period of time. All in all, we really enjoyed the experience enough to book another cruise on Regent. Read Less

This was our fourth cruise with RSS but our first on Mariner. We got a chance to explore Lima before we embarked, which went very smoothly, once we had lobbied the local DMC company to stick to the stated embarkation times guaranteed by RSS, according to suite status! Disembarking in Buenos Aires was less smooth as a shuttle bus had to be used to transport guests to the terminal from the ship. This city needs a dedicated cruise terminal badly, given the number of ships coming here. Mariner's refit has been put back from early 2017, and it showed. Things generally look tired, carpets, curtains, public areas etc. Dining is something championed by RSS but the menus remain the same in Prime 7, year on year. Signatures only had four main courses, which is a bit limiting over a longer cruise. Guests can dine in both restaurants a limited number of times, according to suite status, but even so, if fortunate to have more opportunities, selection of dishes is poor. Compass Rose is a star performer, lots of choice, very good quality and excellent service. Good atmosphere. Settle Mare also suffers from a 'samey' menu. Starter buffet much the same every night we went there. Main courses don't automatically come with vegetables, so ask! Wines very good. We don't use the entertainment offers but friends spoke highly of it. The Star Duo in the Horizon Lounge were our favourites! Very talented indeed. Lectures by Terry Breen were much appreciated. Lounges and bars cater very well for guests with great staff who remember your cocktail favourites! Excursions were diverse and informative. Local guides and drivers, without exception, were first class. A longer journey to an activity soon passed in professional hands. Very well chosen and executed excursions. Some of the ports were more interesting than others but the sights and wildlife viewing opportunities were faultless. Our only grave disappointment being the captain's decision not to dock in the Falkland Islands due to inclement weather. Whilst this decision was respected, and alternative port and excursions efficiently organised, we feel that RSS should state very clearly indeed in their given itinerary that the chances of visiting this port are far less than 50%.
