Just walked into town from the ship's berth, had a look around and walked back to the ship. Would prefer if the cruise came back through either Auckland and Bay of Islands or Vanuatu after Tahiti and Bora Bora.

Last time took some local buses up to the hills etc..this time took the local trains, did a trip up the hills to Johnsonville and back ( about 30 min each way), then train to Waikanae ( about 1 hour each way ) - lovely views to water and hills etc. On the way back the train ran over a sheep and had to stop and driver pulled out from under train ( just a normal trip in NZ I suppose ). Best thing was it was only $40 for four people ( on weekend ). Great trip great views. Then went walking around Wellington to churches, shops, parliament etc. Long cheap outing. Read Less

This is a good place to walk around on your own we visited the Mauri Museum which was excellent only stayed a few hours as we wanted to do the cable car, but you could have spent the whole day there and it was free, If you have no walking problems only get a one way ticket on the cable car no one told us this we got a return but when we got up there realised it was best to walk down as you see the gardens better and it's not to strenuous a lovely cafe in the rose gardens then a easy walk back to the ship. I did not take the cruise excursion but booked Walk Wellington at $20 (www.walkwellington.org.nz) and had Keith as my guide. He spent 3 hours carefully meandering through the roads and sites stopping to tell stories and history. The walk ended in Civic Square where i-Site is. I chose to spend the afternoon at Te Papa Museum of New Zealand. Entrance and wifi are free. Try the Gallipoli exhibit. It was powerful and engaging. Read Less

Did our own thing. Went into town and did some shopping and then walked around the waterfront areas. Also did the Te Papa Museum. Great sunny day with little wind - unusual for Wellington.

We booked a walking tour with Walk Wellington. We met John at the Wellington Railway Station and proceeded around the CBD. This was really interesting with lots of history and some beautiful buildings. The tour finished at lunch time in front of Te Papa Museum, where we had time to explore on our own. I was less impressed with this museum than I expected, but there is something for everyone in this large building. We could have caught a taxi back to the ship, but chose to walk and it was a long walk! Read Less
