414 Rostock (Warnemunde) Cruise Reviews

Exceptional things to do around the port. Very easy to walk around, eat, sight see and shop. No need to take a 2+ hour train ride to Berlin. Do that on another trip.

We walked to the local train station in Warnemunde from the ship, no more than 10 minutes, and got a day ticket for the local trains, £3.66 each. We took the train to Rostock, about 20 minutes away, and then a local tram to the old town centre. We enjoyed a coffee and then a stroll around Rostock old town and river side before heading back to Warnemunde where we had lunch at water side snack and fish bars. There is excellent souvenir shopping at the port. Read Less

We wanted to book the Schwerin Castle tour, but when we tried it was no longer available -- probably filled up. Luckily, I looked online and discovered that there is a rental car lot right across the street from where the cruise ship docks. I pre-booked a car from Hertz and we drove to the castle ourselves, which saved a lot of money. It was 86 Euros for the car and 8.5 Euro/person for admission, compared to $139 per person for the Norwegian shore excursion. We just walked across the street to the car rental lot, got the car, used Google Maps on our phone to drive to Schwerin, which took about an hour on both freeway and quieter roads. So easy -- don't be worried about driving in Germany! There is a parking lot right across the bridge from the castle, and since we arrived early it was mostly empty. (By the time we left the lot was full.) The castle opens at 10, and we were there before it opened, ahead of the cruise ship tours. We were able to wander through a mostly-empty castle. And it was wonderful! It's beautiful inside and out. The gardens are small but lovely. We ate Sunday brunch at the cafe in the castle's Orangery, and it was delicious. An all-together lovely day. We hired Harry’s taxi to take the 6 of us to Schwerin and Wismar. Both town are cute. We did not go into Schwerin palace because we had seen so many palaces by that time they were blending together. It isn’t expensive though, like 9 euro. Schwerin had a market in their square with some amazing brats. So good. The cathedrals in both towns are worth seeing. It was nice to spend the day seeing the countryside and wander a couple old towns. It cost us about 100 euro pp. Harry then stopped at the beach on the way back and bought us a beer. It was chilly but neat. They have both a nudist beach and a “textile” beach on the Baltic Sea. Sounds too cold for me but there were swimmers and kite surfers out. We had a great time with Harry. Definitely recommend him. Read Less

This was a real bonus as we didn’t really know what to expect and it is a lovely town with a great sandy beach and a lovely harbour to walk around which is very close walk to and from the ship. We chose to go into Rostock and went to the railway station nearby where you will see ticket machines and opposite these you will see a shop. At the side entrance around the corner from the shop you can buy a 1 day rail and tram pass from the office for 6 Euro and the lady will give you a slip of paper that tells you to how to validate the ticket on the platform before getting on train then get off train at Rostock HBF ( 9 stops) yo then need to go down two levels to the tram Platform A Blue tram. Take tram 5 or 6 and get off at stop Neuer Market ( New Market) this is a lovely square with access to shops and nice buildings Trains are every 30 mins and trams every 10 mins. Easy Peasy . Then we came back to Waremunde and had a cocktail on the ship side of the harbour which was less busy. Read Less

We hired bikes in the town centre for 10 euros for the day and firstly cycled around the small town, to see the lighthouses etc., and then an approximate 12 mile round trip to Nienhagen, all along safe cycling/walking paths through the countryside, woodland parks and beaches. There were many restaurants and cafes along the way but we chose to grab a bite to eat at the end of the round trip in Nienhagen. We chose not to travel the long distance to Berlin or Hamburg, as we would see so many cities/town centres on our itinerary and thought seeing the countryside and seaside towns would be more enjoyable. stayed in rostock and warnamunde. Rostock was kinda boring, and can be missed, BUT Warnemunde was great and totally worth getting off the boat to spend the day at the beach and along the canal.
