Several passengers really enjoyed an excursion in the more immediate area of Warnemunde. We chose to take a tour of Berlin's Top Ten sights. Bad mistake. Very expensive, didn't get to go inside any buildings. Basically it was a 3 hour train ride on an old train to Berlin, driving around on a bus all day long save for a few stops to take pictures, a totally inedible meal at some buffet in Berlin, more bus, and then another old train back. A very long day (14 hours or so) with not much to show for it but a short fuse. Be very aware, you'll need Euro's to use any public bathrooms (a fact that wasn't explained earlier). Also, if you feel like the Allied Forces were in "the right", your tour guide might rub you the wrong way. All in all, we found the city a hodgepodge of not too attractive architecture - but all very meaningful according to our guide. Surely for $249/person, one could round up a few other people and actually experience the city more fully through another tour company. Read Less

We didn't make the long trek to Berlin, instead took the trains to Schwerin to see the castle. It is a lovely fairytale castle and the gardens are also gorgeous. There isn't much inside it to see though, so it's more about the exterior of the building. Schwerin itself was also very pretty although it's over an hour from Warnemunde (change trains at Rostock). We had a little look around Rostock as well and found it to be quite pretty.   Read Less

If you don't want to travel to Berlin, you'll have a wonderful day here.  Wander the back streets as well as the main shopping area to enjoy the full atmosphere of this town.  The cafes along the canal are inviting,  for a sunset dinner and people watching.  We found some little shops on back streets with non-tourist goods, such as Goebel porcelain.  On the main tourist drag, we also found exceptional bargains in extra clothing.  There are the usual number of just-souvenirs, but scattered among them are shops locals use, as well as more handcraft goods. You'll find time to go to Rostock, which was heavily bombed in WWII and a keen eye will perceive much evidence of such.  Take the train, which is right by the port, and the ticket includes a transfer to the electric line downtown, less than a half hour for both.  It's well worth going to the Lutheran Church with the medieval astronomical clock, as well as enjoy the architecture overall.  When you are done, head to the river and pick up a one-hour river boat back to Warnemunde.  This port was one of our favorites, being independent travellers.  Inexpensive and easy local transport, and relaxing overall.  Warnemunde can look like a tourist-driven locale or a place to explore North German history and culture.  It's your choice. Didn't know anything about this part of Germany but it was very pleasant. We did our own thing by train and went to the Molli railway and spent some time at the resort at the end of the line where we enjoyed a very pleasant light
