We didn't like any of the excursions offered by the ship so we got the free shuttle bus from the port into town and along with our map found our own way around. Trondheim has it's nice parts and it's not so nice parts with eastern Europeans sitting in the street begging, but then we ignored them and had a couple of hours looking around before going back to the ship as it had started to rain. Once again Shuttle Bus took us into the City Centre. Enjoyed seeing the old houses and waterfront area as we trundled along. Drop off point is a stone's throw from the Cathedral, where we headed. Bought the combined entrance ticket which covers Nidaros itself, plus the Museum, and the side building where the Crown Jewels of Norway are kept. The Cathedral, and in particular the Rose window, are truly beautiful. Very much enjoyed our sunny Sunday afternoon in Trondheim. Read Less

A port we did on our own, the port is some distance from the town but dependant on one's fitness levels a 15 minute sharp walk. We took the shuttle at $6 each way and enjoyed tremendously the cathedral and museums in the complex (Archbishops palace and crown jewels) a ticket for all three was 140 kroner a saving of the 189 kroner of buying each separate. The military museum is in the same complex and is brilliant and free although poignant about the Nazi occupation and persecution in the second world war. From the cathedral a short walk to the river and the old lift bridge and colourful converted warehouses a fabulous photo opportunity. Back on board Monksholm is a small island with buildings which is also photogenic and appeared to have many tourist boats visiting. Highlight was a wedding party with bride / groom chauffeur and photographer who used the dockside and Monksholm as a super backdrop for their wedding snaps and made a great picture for us as well. Daylight, icy and a short walk from the town, we only had a couple of hours here and by the time you find your way around it is time to return to the ship. But it was nice to wander around.

Easy to explore on foot. The first hotel you encounter from the quay ( a Rica one I think) has an interesting free permanent modern art exhibition. The cathedral was worth seeing although not open when we visited.

A lovely place with nice shopping malls. Some superb buildings and scenery. Tromso: Fabulous place. Take the cable car for a breathtaking ride. Take the Funicular railway to the cliff top overlooking the city...what a view! You may have to queue to go on the cable car, but take and organised trip on a coach around the city to learn about the culture. The saila away from Tromso SOuth was the best scenery of the whole cruise. North Cape: Just to say "I've been there" should be enough. To stand on the Northern most tip of Europe in good weather was great. The view actually isn't that inspring though and the cafe and restarant doesn't offer that much inspiration either.....however, you must go! Read Less
