We were fortunate to have a local friend who met us to show us around this beautiful town. The ship docked at Mt Manganui where one could walk to the beach and around the headland walk. There were a number of shops and areas to explore there, as well as in Tauranga itself about 15 minutes drive away. A beautiful area to explore. Read Less

Great stop and weather too, walked to the Mt and around the docking area. I went back to the beach and snorkeled along the rocks on the island. The water was warm and just fun to do.

This was my second visit to this city. The sights and sounds of the Thermal areas and the wonderful Maori culture are a memory that I will never forget.

We had been to Rotorua so stayed in the port of beautiful Mt Manganui, which is an extinct volcano. It is next to a beautiful beach and shopping centre, just meters from the port.

Took shuttle into Tauranga as on our last cruise we did not go here but stayed around Mount Maunganui. Would not bother again. The area around the cruise ship terminal,Mount Maunganui, is much more pleasant. So we came back to the ship and walked into the "mall type" area and had a fantastic lunch at Latitude 37. We did a tour on our own through Viator. It would have been great if one couple had bothered to get off the ship in time to leave the port at the assigned time. I think they were waiting for someone to personally invite them to leave the ship. Our driver made the other 12 of us sit around and wait an hour for them. I will take that up with Viator. It cut the tour short for the rest of us. Read Less

We hired a car and drove to Wai o tapu to see the champagne lake. It was a great trip and I'm glad we did this. It was a difficult destination because there was a lot to do and many choices. Hiring a car was a good choice. We wanted to see Hobbiton too but just didn't want to hurry too much. It was a really hot day so we ended up not going to any of the hot water spas at Rotorua. Too hot! We did go and park at the beach at Mt Manganui after visiting the wonderful Wai o Tapu (well worth a visit - great walk, many wonderful sights) and that beach was quite impressive. We really liked the area - it was like the Gold Coast before it got overpopulated. Lovely. Read Less

Ship actually docks at Mt Manganui so you need to get shuttle or taxi into Tauranga itself. Just walked off ship. Nice seaside area with good coffee shops. We walked to the top of Moturiki Island then had a coffee.

Shopping, unfortunately needed shoes as ones we took gave us blisters. Wandered through town, pleasant enough. Lovely couple told about a larger shopping centre

Really good tour. Really enjoyed taking part in a Maori greeting ceremony. Good to know that the Maori run the tour and their high school gets money from it to go on tour to the rest of the world.

I took the shuttle bus to Tauranga and walked around. Went to The Elms. Absolutely awesome place to visit. If you're into history don't miss it.

Nice place but the ship doesn't dock in Tauranga. It docks in Mount Manganui which is a nice place with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, surf beach and harbour beach.

Rented a car and drove to Wai-o-tapu and Waimongu, both of which had interesting thermal features. If pressed for time, just do Wai-o-tapu.
