A great starting and finishing point to our cruise. I'd recommend day or two before your cruise to get into the arctic 'vibe'.

On Monday morning, July 24, the ship anchored off shore near Pyramiden, an abandoned Russian/Soviet mining town. After breakfast, I boarded a tender, and went ashore. It truly is a ghost town, and the first Russian area I have ever been to. Wild. After I walked around for a couple of hours, I eventually found myself at the Pyramiden Hotel bar. I bought a pint of beer brewed elsewhere on Spitsbergen; I believe in Barentsburg, another Russian settlement. I then walked back to the dock, boarded a tender, and returned to the ship. Later that afternoon, the ship departed and sailed to Longyearbyen, where we docked in the evening. Read Less

This was the most memorable two days of the cruise. We had a day docked in Longyearbyen, where we did a dog cart ride out in the Aventdalen valley not far from town. We also cruised north, into the majestic Magdelenefjord and near the polar ice barrier. The beautiful scenery was evident as we cruised north and south. We would love to go back. Read Less

Ny Alesund was an interesting stop and we had time to see everything, many a few purchases, and learn about some of the early 1900's expeditions that started here.

In Longyearbyen we spent the morning walking to town, taking pictures and looking into the shops. It was a partly cloudy but windy day.In the afternoon we took the ship's tour to a Husky dog yard outside of town. We spend about 45 minutes with the dogs. There was a camp fire and they offered us coffee and cake. On the way back we stoped at several spots to take pictures. Overall it was a great day. Read Less

Sun was out! Ny Alysund first, a real feel of being in the Arctic. Walked around the research station looking at beautiful scenery, glaciers and snow covered mountains.Longyearbyen, toured around by coach, then visited Svalbard Husky Centre. Everyone very friendly. Then to shopping area. Must not go outside of marked ares as could end up as a Polar Bears lunch.Barentsberg could be visited by tender. A climb of 264 steps up to look around the mines and accomodation of the miners working there. Sad, depressing place. Read Less
