This was the port stop for us. We took a local taxi with a driver for three hours and were impressed with the landscape and villages not far away from Suva. There is a lot to see here if you move away from teh port area of Suva.

Walked past President's home with guard in a "man skirt" as well as the Grand Pacific hotel. Visited the Handicrafts market. Note: this is a ship replenishment stop for fuel, food, etc. Read Less

My husband and I did another walk and explored Suva by ourselves. We found that Suva, Fiji is a little more developed than Lautoka, Fiji and has newer-looking commercial and apartment/condo buildings. Upon walking we happened to have turned onto a street that was away from the bustling little city, a street that went uphill. A few hundred meters from the crowded city is an old, tiny but charming Roman Catholic cathedral built perhaps a few centuries ago by Spanish missionaries. Outside is a grotto and a few steps away are the beautiful winding staircases, one on each side of the cathedral that leads to the main church behind a huge balcony. It was beautiful inside, so lovely, so inviting, so cool with the massive arched doors all open on both sides of the church. The day was exceedingly hot, but inside was cool and peaceful. We attended mass that was already in session. The church attendants, mostly native Fijians, sang beautifully and following the mass we met the pastor, an octogenarian who is Scottish and fluent in Fijian, French, Italian, Spanish, English, and Japanese! A gentle and kind man, with a quick wit and sense of humor, greeting my husband as we were exiting through the main back doors with a simple, "Italiano!" (for my husband looks and is Italian, born and lived in Italy). Everyone that we met in Suva--strangers, store keepers, the church pastor and parishioners--was warm, friendly, and relaxed. We love Suva. Read Less

Take wet weather clothes as it rained heavily the day we were here in port and some of the shore excursions were cancelled due to the dangerous conditions caused by heavy rain on the dirt paths.

Beware there are people that come out when cruise ships are in town and want you to do their tours (and charge a huge amount) We went with a company that was set up at the wharf. Told us a time the bus would leave but waited a long time until they filled up the bus before we would leave. Was taken to a village where we were told we had to pay extra to enter this village - even though we were told there was nothing more to pay. Some paid but most refused. Discovered we all seemed to pay different amounts. Also had to pay extra to see a waterfall (most didn't) waterfall was hardly running. Was supposed to go for 3 hours but ended up going for 4 1/2. Couldn't get off quick enough. Read Less

Suva was a disappointment. We did see the real Fiji, which is OK, but it was not the island paradise we expected. Either have the expectations of the poverty that exists in Fiji or take a trip to the other side of the island.

We like to look around Suva and shop. On this occasion we had lunch in a multi storey modern building within the CBD and will return to that location for a meal when next in Suva - was one of the best meal stops ashore we had experienced.
