Back to the ship's excursions. What an amazing view of the city from the ship! Truly a city of spires! The Vasa is probably the most impressive thing to see. I did have to ask the guide to face us when talking, as we did not have headphones. Especially at the Vasa, she wanted to face the ship as she pointed out things. The room is immense so sound is lost, plus there are so many other groups with guides, it would help to have headphones, or for them to be sure to turn around facing the group. Read Less

We walked from the port in Studsgarden to town. It was a 35 minute walk to Gamlastan, the old town. We definitely recommend checking out the pedestrian areas just beyond Gamlastan for shopping. On Gamlastan, avoid the most heavily trafficked pedestrian street. If you go a street or two over, you will be able to enjoy the charming atmosphere with about 75% less of the crowd. Get lost on the windy streets and you will be rewarded with great little artists shops and cafes. Warning: There are so many tourist traps in Gamlastan that we recommend you scout out a place in advance to eat at so you don't get sucked into a bad, overpriced, crowded experience. Try their tasty ciders, the brand name is Birka, and they come in flavors like pear and fresh apple. Refreshing and tasty. Read Less

Be sure to be out on deck either going into or leaving Stockholm as it is quite beautiful. Loved Stockholm but way too short on time. We purchased a hop on hop off ferry ticket. Good choice. Went to the Vasa museum first thing as recommended but I would do it later when there was no line to get in. If you go first thing be sure to get off the ship as soon as you can. We left a 1/2 hour later and had to wait a 1/2 hour to buy tickets. After this stop we went to the old town of Gamla Stan.We enjoyed this area a lot. Browsing the shops was nice and we all had some delicious sweet treats. Because of the short time in this port everyone is going back at the same time so the ferry was crowded. Be sure to allow enough time. Also we wanted lunch on the ship upon returning and the buffet was insane. And Princess had one section of it closed! Read Less

From Nynaeshmn, we took at bus into Stockholm which was about a 45 minute ride. While Stockholm is a big city, the Old Town area is easy to on foot. The main "shopping street" is not much more than souvenir shops and a few restaurants. Walk around a few of the Old Town blocks to see some different sides of Stockholm. Definitely go see the palace and the changing of the guard. It is unlike any you will see. For non-walkers, take the bus tour around the city. You will actually accomplish more. Stockholm uses Kronars...not like Dutch Kroners. While they take only Euro bills, you get change back in their money which can't be spent anywhere else. Stick with credit cards that have PIN numbers if you can. There was a lot of confusion at 3:00pm when NCL passengers had to congregate on the sidewalk to get buses back to Nynaeshmn to the cruise ship. Site seeing buses have "cruise ship" signs on them too, and I think some passengers got confused and got on the wrong bus. Read Less

We did the ship's river cruise (with free time afterwards). Great way to see the sights and get a feeling for the 'island' nature of the city. Nice architecture.

The highlight of this port is the 4 hour sailing in the archipelago, be sure to see it at least for a couple of hours. We took the 76 city bus to the center of town, just remember to buy tickets before boarding at any little store or info center. Then follow the blue painted line to get out of the port to the bus stop. We went to the Vasa museum, which should not be missed, the movie is interesting, it takes 1 or 2 hours to visit. Then we went to the Royal Palace and it took us the rest of our available time, not to be missed. There is also a nice cultural museum next to the Vasa which some in our group chose to visit and they enjoyed it. Read Less

We booked the 4 Star Scandic Anglais Hotel thought the cruise line at very good rate. The hotel was lovely (in the Scandinavian minimalist way)and was in an excellent location (Humlegarden) within walking distance of the main attractions & 2 Tube stops from Gamla Stan. We had dinner in the restaurant which was nice Sek800 for mains course for 3, 1 dessert & drinks. It was Mid Summer festival for the 3 days we stayed in Stockholm which gave a lovely atmosphere. All tourist attractions were open but the department stores/ shops were closed. As the weather was beautiful, we were able to walk to most attractions. We saw the Vasa Museum which was impressive. We took the movie first (25mins) followed by the guided tour. Both very informative as well as entertaining. It cost Sek110 per adult (child free). Across the road is Skansen open air museum, another must see, but it looked so packed we decided to leave it for another day. 5 mins further along, Grona Lund amusement park kept us thrilled (and frightened) for a few (expensive) hours. The old town (Gamla Stan) is lovely and you would could spend the day here. The best thing we did was pre book a walking tour by Gallivant Productions. Sweden from Ice Age to Ikea. The best value 2 hours we had in Stockholm (Sek135 adult/90 child). Cant recommend this highly enough. We had lunch in the Italian restaurant Michelangelo. Sek 700 for 3 mains, 1 dessert & drinks. We also ate in Berns Restaurant which we found very overpriced for "Singapore Street food" although served in very opulent surroundings. We also took an evening cruise as far as Vaxholm on SS Stockholm which we booked at the pier. The scenery is beautiful and was very relaxing 3 hours. We bought drinks & desserts on board which -like everywhere in Stockholm-was very expensive Sek110 for a dessert, 800 for a drink. The cruise cost was reasonable at Sek 400 for 2 adults & 1 child. Overall, Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities we have been in. We would go back in a flash except that it is so expensive for eating & drinking there.   Read Less

Thursday, July 1 Stockholm, Sweden In Stockholm, we took the HOHO Boat just as you walked off the ship to your left (10 Euros/$15). Our first stop was Old Town, where we walked along the quaint streets, stopping here and there at the shops. When we got to the Royal Palace, we had a cinnamon roll in the courtyard. We got back on the HOHO and headed to the Vasa Museum, which was very interesting. Our next stop was Grona Lund Tivoli, a small amusement park that was very quaint. Although their currency is the Krona, we had no problem using Euros. We got back on the HOHO boat and went right to the cruise berth stop, then walked onto the ship. Stockholm is a very beautiful city. Since it consists of about 20 islands, the HOHO boat is an ideal way to go. Again, we had perfect weather, close to 75 degrees. Read Less

We were in Stockholm just prior to the royal wedding so the palace and the Cathedral were all closed (along with some roads by the end of the day). However as a bonus we did see Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel (as he now is) come out of the Cathedral after the wedding practice. You can walk to town, catch the shuttle bus or just jump on the hop on hop off water taxi from the quay and beat the crowds to the Vasa museum. The sailing into and out of Stockholm are beautiful (although watching outbound means you don't have to get up before dawn!)   Read Less

We didn't have enough time in Stockholm, due to some weird issue with our ship's return to Dover two days later, cutting our time short in Stockholm. We did have a good city tour and plenty of time at the splendid Vasa museum.

We took a ship's tour and had Caspar (the friendly guide!) show us around. He was amusing and knowledgeable. We went on a short drive to take panoramic photos, visited the City Hall (interesting) and learned about the Nobel Prize Ceremony then went to the Vasa Museum and a quick scoot around Gamla Stan, the old town. We had only 40 minutes or so on our own in the Vasa museum, otherwise we were escorted. We loved Stockholm and felt we would like to return for a city break one day to be able to see more and in more depth. The excursion was just a taster and we would in future choose to do one place well, i.e. The Vasa museum rather than try to see so much in one trip. Read Less

We really liked Stockholm. We wandered around Gamla Stan and then visited the Vasa Museum. We ran into some trouble with public transportation, so be aware of that and always allow for extra time when you're DIYing.
