You have to take a city bus, cab or tour to get to town. Buses are reasonable but have to charge tickets - no cash accepted. Again, plan what you want to see, know when to get off the bus and enjoy!

Hop on, hop off again - got a discount as we stuck with the Greyline (Stromma) firm. Definitely worth doing the boat and bus, the boat was a great way back to the ship.

We explored the city on our own with the Hop on Hop off tour....this is a great option and not as expensive as the shore excursion offered by NCL.

We spent two days here enjoying the sunny weather. There is lots to do. We toured the palace, the city centre and took a boat tour to the summer palace.

took the Hop on Hop off. Very usefull to go all around and decide where to stop to visit. Was a holiday when we stopped so the city was not very lively. But visited the City Hall which is very much worth a visit.

The hop on/ off bus gave us a good introduction to Stockholm and, because of walking limitations, worked fine. It would have been nice to explore the old city but we don't walk well on cobblestones.

We used the hop on, hop off boats and they were extremely easy to use and right by where we docked. The Open Air Museum was very interesting.

We were supposed to dock closed to town, but ended up in the hinterland. There seemed to be much confusion in port with little information being shared. We caught a taxi for 40€ for 6 and went to the Vasa. From there we wandered, took a local ferry and finally a taxi back to ship. We spent less than we would have with transfers. STOCKHOLM: Again, buy Rick Steves’ book “Northern European Cruise Ports” for detailed information. The most important thing is to get up near sunrise (5am) and watch from the deck or balcony as the ship cruises among the many small islands that line the coast. It is much like Alaska’s Inside Passage, but with traditional (and sometimes enormous) vacation homes along the way.I have mixed feelings about Stockholm. It is enjoyable but outrageously expensive, and it is the only port without public transport nearby (just private tour buses and boats). The ho/ho boat adjacent to the ship, which is the most convenient way to get from the ship to various sights, has doubled in price in just two years. Other public transport and museums are also double what you might expect to pay elsewhere.Since I have visited Stockholm several times before and have enjoyed its museums in the past, this time I simply walked the 30 minutes along the shoreline to Gamla Stan (the Old Town) and spent most of the day enjoying its narrow streets (especially Prastgatan) and sunny squares (especially Stortorget).A little before noon I stood on the north side of the palace and watched as the palace guard paraded in across the Norrbro Bridge, then along the waterfront, then up the Slottsbacken (south side of the palace) to the west courtyard. Access to the courtyard was blocked after the band passed by, but there is a front and back entry to the palace gift shop, and one can pass through it to see the changing of the guard if other access is blocked. The band plays many marches, and the uniforms make it a scene out of an old operetta -- quaint and fun. From there I walked into the new town, which offers little of interest compared to the other Baltic port cities. For first time visitors, the Vasa Ship Museum, Nordic Museum, and Skansen Folk Museum are all enjoyable but pricey. They are clusterd within easy walking distance on Djurgarden Island, which is served by the ho/ho shuttle boat (and ho/ho bus). The National Museum on a nearby island was closed for renovations. The cruise through the archipelago (entering and leaving) is breathtaking. Gamla Stan (Old Town) is fun to explore on foot, with its lovely small streets. Lots of tourist shops. The main shopping street (in the modern area of town) is similar to major cities, but worth a stroll…no shopping as items are quite pricey. We didn’t tour the palace as we were “palaced out” after St. Petersburg. We were pleasantly surprised to be entertained by a military band and the horse guard as it was the opening day of Parliament. We even got to see the Queen and the Royal Family in “Cinderella-like” horse drawn carriages. Read Less

Unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions, the ship could not dock in Stockholm. To get to shore, you had to go by Tender. A free shuttle was then able to take you into Stockholm which was an hour each way. Unfortunately there were terrible traffic hold ups and although 30 shuttle buses had been ordered, none were available when we got to the pier and there were long queues. Due to the heavy rain, we decided to return to the ship for the rest of the day. A longer stay was organised for those people who managed to go on trips. Well done to the Captain and crew for what must have been an extremely difficult time for them and for their organisation in such a short space of time. Read Less
