ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland (Canada) - we had originally reserved a tour, but decided to just take the trolley, which for $5 stopped everywhere our $55 tour was to go. It's a big enough town to manage our numbers, and was nice for walking down (ride a bus or trolley up as it's quite a climb!). And finally the exchange rate was not bad, so we could afford to buy a couple of souvenirs! We rode the trolley to the old fort area where you had good views of the city, port, and surrounds. I did not want to go to the GEO Center, as it appeared to be an advertisement for Exxon-Mobile's drilling operations (and I've seen those), but it did appear that they had some interesting geological information about the area. We visited the Basilica of St. John which was not only beautiful, but had helpful people offering information and answering questions. Difficult to take photos with a point and shoot, so bring your "good" camera if that's what you're after. We tried to go to the Rooms (art gallery, museum), but it was under renovation and we couldn't figure out how to get inside. Ask at the TI before you head out. Other people got in, so it was open. After reading the tours offered by RCI and looking at the tide tables, we decided to book a cab tour. We read reviews on Trip Advisor and hired a specific company. The driver was very proud of his town, and knew it's history well. The ship came in a little later than originally planned so part of the tour had to be dropped, but it was still a very full tour. Well it rained most of the day (at least while we were off the ship). The weather sucked. Had we been at sea, it would of been interesting. Heavy wind, heavy rain. We walked in town and hit the mall.

Excellent port - greeted by an absolutely amazing Newfoundland Dog. Took taxi tour around the city and just loved going up Signal Hill where Marconi sent his first wireless message from England. Also saw the reanactment army.

Best 10 was good with a little bit of everything. It did not leave much time to shop so if you want to do that pick a shorter trip. We got some great pictures. Tour guide did a nice job. Getting off the ship could be done a bit better as it is one mass exodus. Other cruise lines have you meet in certain areas and the tours that leave earliest are exited first. Our tour got a late start due to this factor. Read Less

No duty free facilities in St Johns. Tours were pretty bland. Shopping is so so. People are very friendly. Place was very clean. Shopping center such as it was was within easy walking distance of the ship.
