You can walk everywhere here at no cost and it is beautiful. See the Eagle recovery park, the Russian Cathedral, the Russian governor's house, just a lovely place.

We booked through Carnival and did the city tour with the Russian influence which included a Russian dance show, walking tour of the totem pole park (can't think of the name of it) and a visit to the raptor center. It was very informative and not boring. We really enjoyed seeing the eagles at the raptor center and exploring their nature trails. We also took the boat tour out to the salmon hatchery, not to be confused with a salmon farm. The salmon hatchery's goal is conservation and replenishment of the salmon population and it is very neat to learn about how they do that. We spent very little time in Sitka outside of our tour, but it seemed like a very busy town with lots to see and do. Read Less

Very interesting port and very convenient.  Residents were extremely friendly.  Shops had lots of interesting Russian momentos that are not the usual Alaskan souvenirs.

The church and the bishops house are easy to get to and worth seeing.  Otherwise not much else unless you take an excursion.  They have a library close to the dock where your tender drops you off.  They have free internet if you want to avoid the 75 cents per minute that the Zaandam charges for slow internet.  Read Less

12-May-2009  We tendered into Sitka without any particular plans for the day. As we arrived at the pier, another ship, the Carnival Spirit was visible, and many tour operators were meeting passengers as we disembarked the tenders.  Unfortunately, Sitka was a short day - we had to be back at the tenders by 3 PM, so that limited what you could do as far as tours if you scheduled them yourself.   We ended up having quite the full day.  It started when we decided to join a party of 4 to charter our own private whale watch tour. Captain Rich and his dog Eva were great. We were lucky to see gray whales in the waters off Sitka and lots of cormorants, sea lions, sea otters and a small rock outcropping filled with at least 50 Bald eagles nesting... that was incredible.  The captain poked around the waters to get us the best vantage point possible for the wildlife. It was a three hour tour, cost us $120 per person and it was well worth it as there were only 6 of us on the boat.    After returning to the marina, Captain Rich recommended some places to walk to, the fish hatchery, and the Sitka National historic park. This park is the site of a memorial to the Russians who died fighting during the Tlingit-Russian confiict.  The park was filled with birds singing and was really peaceful. The paths were easy to follow and offered many options to enjoy the park.  There was a visitor center there, and we took advantage of the restroom facilities, but did not enter the center.  My only regret is that we did not have more time there, once we got back to the tender port at about 2:30 PM we had to stand and wait in line a long time to leave.  We were finally on the tender at 3PM.  Read Less

This was my favorite!  I loved the town, it was so neat and pretty.  We did a private whale watch/wildlife tour and can not speak highly enough about it!  Capt. Davey was so good about teaching us about Sitka and the animals!  We loved every minute of it.  Even though it was our most expensive tour I would do it again in a heartbeat!  Shopping was fun!  I was on a quest for Russian nesting dolls and wow did I find them!  So many it was hard for me to choose. Again, only complaint was wishing for more time! Read Less

Sitka was our only rainy day, thankfully.  We enjoyed our walk through the forest at the National Park.  Would have been much better without the rain.  But it really is a lovely walk with the totems, and the staff at the park was very helpful.Afterwards we went to the Raptor Center and enjoyed seeing these amazing birds so close up. Overall, this was my least favorite port.  There were some very good stores, though, where we could purchase souvenirs at good prices and different stuff than we'd seen in all the other ports. The Captain's choice trek only holds 16 passengers while the sea otter wildlife excursion had about 50 people.  Read Less

Sitka was an OK experience, very few cruise lines make Sitka a choice port therefore very few ships are docked in town. Sitka is a tender required port of call therefore if you want to debark ASAP you need to be waiting in the theatre at least 45 minutes before the scheduled time of arrival to get a low numbered tendere ticket to get you into town sooner. No shore excursions were completed however took tour of town on our own using maps given out at the tender dock one major highlight was the Alaska Raptor Center ths place was amazing holding many bald eagles that have been injured. Right outside of the tender dock lies St. Michael's Cathedral this place was a really great experience of what a russian church looks like the admission fee is $2.00 for adults and kids are free. Loved it, my favorite part. Beautiful place. No plans, got off the ship (it is a tender, not bad, they use the life boats) and walked to the National Park with all the totem poles. It is a nice walk and you see the town that way; we stopped at the Bishop House and toured the free part, and stopped at the hatchery, these are both on the walk to the park. Then walked back to town, lunch. My husband broke off to find an internet cafe to do some work (the ship internet is good, but wouldn't let him download a program he needed to design some buildings), my daughter and I walked through town and did a little shopping. Back to ship, room for a short rest, dinner, kids club for daughter. My husband and I tried the broadway type show, but ended up walking out. We found it very bad, but some people liked it; matter of opinion. I went to the internet cafe, he to the casino. Read Less

Good weather, pretty scenery. Took Sea Otter and Wildlife cruise. The only time I felt a little seasick despite wearing patch. Crew said to let them know if we felt seasick. I did and they gave me some type of ginger chew which worked pretty quickly. Naturalist on board was very informative. Crew did a great job of being on the lookout for wildlife. We ended up seeing a whale, deer, many sea otters, and many eagles. Crew gave out snacks and drinks. We had a great time. Had to use tenders to get to/from town which was no problem at all. Enjoyed walking around and met some nice locals. Read Less

Only four fishers on the boat no frills but professional, well worth the money. The name Sitka means "people on the outside of Shee", and "Shee" is the Tlingit name for the Baronof Island. Sitka is only accessible by air or sea. Sitka is well known for it's spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and a rich cultural history. Sitka was colonized by the Russians in 1799 and that Russian influence remains strong today. The Russian Orthodox Church remains present with the historic Cathedral of St. Michael standing tall in the downtown area. St Michael's was built in 1848 and remains intact today. We did not book an excursion here but simply strolled the streets taking the culture and history in. There is a great National Park in Sitka and if you enjoy a nice leisurely hike this is the place to do it. There are many totem poles to see in this area. Read Less
