Really beautiful area, and lovely town (former capital of the Russian Territory, then the Alaska Territory), with a terrific nature hike &/or bike trail through a lovely forest, if you choose one of the tours that include it.

Sitka was also a great place to watch whales. We took a small boat excursion called the Sitka Marine Adventure. Our pilot was Sonny. He was extremely competent. We saw a sea otter as well as whales. Sitka is THE place to buy Russian products. I bought three stunning sets of nesting dolls, in Russian, "matroyshkas." If you are a collector, you will be in heaven here. Besides the very high-quality collectible nesting dolls, there are plenty of less-expensive sets to buy as souvenirs. Nowhere else stocked the quality and quantity of nesting dolls we saw here. We saw one 50-doll set priced at over $1000. The stores carried loads of other Russian products as well. Read Less

Loved it. There is a lovely walk close to the ship through a fantastic old growth forest with many totems along the way. There is a totem interpretative centre at the start. Through the forest, you then walk across a bridge and are almost across the street from the Raptor Centre, a small rehab centre for flightless birds of prey. Quite small, but interesting. From there took a cab to the Fortress of the Bear; another rehab centre, with bears in large tanks from a former pulp mill company. They are in the process of building a nicer entrance and viewing area. It too is a small attraction; with bears in captivity. It is against the law to release them back into the wild . Had an excellent, if rapid fire, tour with a guide through the Russian bishop's house, and wandered the town a bit. By the time we got to the Russian Orthodox Church, it was closed.....at 3 pm on a cruise ship day! Read Less

It was great! Our guides, Kahloa and Alyssa were fun and very knowledgeable about the area. The forest is beautiful and the hike was accessible for all fitness levels.
