At Sitka we toured on our own and caught the Russian dancers and the totem poles at the National Park. We fell in love with the architecture and rich history of this little town. It was fun to explore - but we had enough time here - I think we would have enjoyed a wildlife excursion more. We had an expensive, greasy lunch at Victoria's. Maybe it just seemed that way because we had gotten used to the food and the service on the boat. They have a little drug store near the dock with a very helpful pharmacist and a lot of sundry supplies. They also make the best milk shakes in town! The wait for the tenders back to the ship was long. Read Less

This is a very quaint small town that is a pleasure to walk about and tour. The highlight for us was the Raptor Center where we saw bald eagles and other birds of prey.

Sitka was wonderful. Charming. We had to take lifeboats to get into the harbor because it's too small to accommodate the ship. Our bus driver was a young kid who took us to a salmon spawning stream. We stood on this bridge overlooking a small stream and watched the salmon spawn and die. It was incredible. I think that was the highlight of the whole trip. Then we saw a master totem carver at work. Again, amazing. But the most wonderful thing was when we went to the community center in Sitka and watched these women dance their Russian dances. And then the bus driver, and two other people, came on stage and sang the Alaska state song. I had tears in my eyes! It was a simple, charming, and totally endearing experience. Read Less

We choose not to do any organized activities here. Instead we walked around town then stopped in at a restaurant to eat. I cannot remember the name of the restaurant. The restaurant wasn't anything to write home about. We both had clam chowder - it was average. We also had an order of their onion rings which were amazing. Not much help here since I don't know the name of the restaurant. Average port. We heard several people talking about the sea otter tours and how great they went. One even had great luck spotting all types of wildlife - eagles, bear, whales and sea otters. Read Less

Our excursions here were the Sea Otter Wildlife Tour and the Fortress of the Bear. The Sea Otter Tour was amazing. The guides were incredibly knowledgeble and attentive. We saw whales, sea otters, harbor seals, bald eagles, jellyfish--all in very close proximity from the small boat we were on. It was cold out that day, but you were able to stay inside the vessel in the heat if you wanted and they had hot drinks available to warm you up if you were outside. I got tons of wildlife pictures and information that I will remember for a long time. That was a great tour crew! Fortress of the bear is a short trip to a rehabilitation center for bear cubs. They were cute and we got a lot of pictures of them playing together. You don't get close to them though. The information about how they came to be there and why a rehab center like that one is important was the real value of the tour. We did a lot of shopping in Sitka too. Sitka Rose Gallery and Wintersong Soap Company were my favorite. They are in the same building down Lincoln Street. I got a lot of 'made in alaska' stuff there to take back as gifts for friends and co-workers. 5-6 dollars each for little sea otter candles, soaps with alaskan themes... all great! If I were wealthy, I would have bought some of the art there too. You'll find lots of beautiful items there. Read Less

This is a tendered in port. It was a port that we had nothing booked but found many vendors once we arrived on shore. There was a mini bus tour that took us on a 90 min tour of Sitka's rain forest and the surrounding parks, and salmon runs. It was a bargain for $20. The tour guide was well versed in ecology, and the economy. She was an amateur photographer (quite good) who knew where the eagle nests were. Sitka was a very nice port and was a port that would not allow the cruise lines to buy up all the retail space. They voted to keep it locally owned. Read Less

Good weather, pretty scenery. Took Sea Otter and Wildlife cruise. The only time I felt a little seasick despite wearing patch. Crew said to let them know if we felt seasick. I did and they gave me some type of ginger chew which worked pretty quickly. Naturalist on board was very informative. Crew did a great job of being on the lookout for wildlife. We ended up seeing a whale, deer, many sea otters, and many eagles. Crew gave out snacks and drinks. We had a great time. Had to use tenders to get to/from town which was no problem at all. Enjoyed walking around and met some nice locals. Read Less

Booked a fishing expedition ahead of time (strongly recommended) with Jeremy Serka of Glory Days charters out of Sitka. Caught our share of king salmon and some rockfish. Only four fishers on the boat no frills but professional, well worth the money. They meet you at the dock with processing info, take the fish, and it magically appears at your door a few days later (extra charge of course, shipping frozen FEd-X is high). Read Less

The name Sitka means "people on the outside of Shee", and "Shee" is the Tlingit name for the Baronof Island. Sitka is only accessible by air or sea. Sitka is well known for it's spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and a rich cultural history. Sitka was colonized by the Russians in 1799 and that Russian influence remains strong today. The Russian Orthodox Church remains present with the historic Cathedral of St. Michael standing tall in the downtown area. St Michael's was built in 1848 and remains intact today. We did not book an excursion here but simply strolled the streets taking the culture and history in. There is a great National Park in Sitka and if you enjoy a nice leisurely hike this is the place to do it. There are many totem poles to see in this area. Read Less

Sitka was an OK experience, very few cruise lines make Sitka a choice port therefore very few ships are docked in town. Sitka is a tender required port of call therefore if you want to debark ASAP you need to be waiting in the theatre at least 45 minutes before the scheduled time of arrival to get a low numbered tendere ticket to get you into town sooner. No shore excursions were completed however took tour of town on our own using maps given out at the tender dock one major highlight was the Alaska Raptor Center ths place was amazing holding many bald eagles that have been injured. Right outside of the tender dock lies St. Michael's Cathedral this place was a really great experience of what a russian church looks like the admission fee is $2.00 for adults and kids are free.
