The first problem is that we had to dock at the secondary facility near the airport - requiring a half hour bus ride to get to town. The second problem is that there were five other ships in port with us - and half of them were "mega-ships". The result is that there were OVER 20,000 cruise visitors in addition to land resort tourists in San Juan that day - completely overwhelming the city's ...

Get away from the main tourist area right by the dock and there is a huge range of eateries to satisfy your culinary curiosity. Duck into a lotto bar for a much cheaper beer than the tourist place just outside :)

Unfortunately the Niew Amsterdam could not dock at the main port as there were already 3 other cruise liners, therefore our ship was docked 5 miles away from San Juan center. Although the situation was somewhat chaotic at the port in San Juan Holland America did a fantastic job by organizing shuttles to go downtown.
