Seeing all the major sites of Rome proper in and hour and 45 minutes--from a bus---suited me. I doubt I would have been satisfied walking to all of those places of antiquity. Be aware--Rome is @ 1 1/2 hour bus ride to city limits from where ship docks---one way; so most excursions last 7 hours or more total. ...

Rome like many large cities was fascinating and we only got a taste of it. We booked a Vatican City tour online and took the train into Rome from the port in Civitavecchia. If you do not take a paid excursion, the Rome included tour is a great way to see many things and you can end in Rome and continue to explore. As we were staying in Rome post cruise we declined the 3-4 hour round trip on a coach to go anywhere and booked the Ostia excursion, which was cancelled due to lack of interest. We took the free shuttle bus into town and enjoyed a couple of hours walking around Civitavecchia. Interesting enough. Much enjoyed Rome on our own over three days.
