We've been here often. We booked a car to take us into the city, and took the train back to Civitavecchia which is very simple and inexpensive. This time we did an independent food walking tour of 3 different neighborhoods. It was terrific - we ate our way through Rome! It was 92 degrees in Rome. We did not feel like taking an 8 to 10 hour tour to Rome having to spend 1.5 hours each way in the bus. Many people who took the tours were complaining about the heat. Just a note that this port is over an hour commute from Rome International airport (fumicino). So if you're flying in to Rome, account for getting to Civitavecchia. There are tons of companies that offer shuttle bus services or private transfers. ...
