Lush foliage and flowers, beautiful views, great roads. Bit of a town by the pier (get wine at the Champions grocery). Great place to rent a car and circle 'round the island (about 3.5 hours).

We took a general island tour (which we did at each stop). We found every guide to be quit knowledgle about the island on tour. The sights we saw were so beautiful that words don't really do justice, and so lots of photos were a must.

Not much to do if you don't take a tour. The tours are cultural in nature. We didn't participate in tours here. Others liked them though.

This is the only port that you dock at, despite what your cruise documents say, which is heavenly, easy on & off. The ship docks right in the main city of Uturoa, a very small city. They do have concessionaires right at the terminal building that provide the same excursions as the Cruise ship offers. We took the 3 hr bus tour of the island for $35 p/p on the Le Truck. They took US $. The ship offered the same trip for $139p/p. Trips on Le Truck are not for everyone, they have hard wooden benches that face sideways. There is no PA system for the guide. The scenery is beautiful, all coastal road with several interesting stops, a Black Pearl Farm (on the water), a sacred site from the ancients, a Vanilla Bean farm. This was a 9:30 am trip that didn't leave until 10:15, but we still got our 3 hour tour. You can also rent cars in Utuora for about $72 for 4 hours. There is one main road and very little traffic and the pavement is good. You'll get a map to tell you where to stop. Four hours is more than enough to see the whole island. Bring snorkel gear and you'll find good snorkeling spots with beach access. Avis has a counter in the Terminal building, but they don't have that many cars, so you may want to reserve it or get there early. Read Less

Went with Bruno on Le Bleu Excursion and had a very good day. The drift snorkling was incredible, though a couple in our group got pretty cut up. The lunch was poor, but the visit to the Pearl Farm and the Vanilla Farm were marvelous.

Went with new friends from the ship on our own to a small motu not far from the ship tie up pier. The water was a bit bumpy and the current more active but we still managed to see great fish. $25pp. No frills!

Nice island. Flatter than Bora Bora and Moorea. Took a boat trip from the dock to the only navigable river in Fr. Polynesia. $70 booked on shore. The river wasn't great, but the trip out there was. We were dropped off at a public Motu (small outer island) where swimming and beach were available and delightful. Snorkeling was superb and you didn't need equipment to see fish and rays. They were just there, waist deep in water. You could stay at the Motu as long as you wanted. Boat came about every hour to take people back. Read Less

We took the "school bus tour" - an open sided vehicle which we booked dockside. The downtown area has a nice square where there is an excellent dance show upon ship's arrival. There are also some very nice boutiques. This is the place to buy black pearls. Also a good place to purchase leis, floral crowns, and flower arrangements. Read Less

The ship actually anchors near Motu Mahana, the cruise line's private island in the vicinity of Taha'a, which in turn is the sister island of Raiatea. We booked the "Coral Garden Drift Snorkel" excursion on the ship. For experienced snorkelers, this is a great experience. A couple of boats picked up the group directly from the ship. We were dropped off at a small island and walked for a few minutes to the head of a pass through the reef. The guide collected our reef shoes, and we drifted single-file through the narrow pass over the corral. Those who wanted had the opportunity to repeat the process, and there was also time fo additional snorkeling at the end. The corral and the fish were exceptionally colorful and diverse. However, the current is quite strong in places, and the water gets very shallow if you miss a turn and are pushed outside the curvy passage. In this case, the cruise line really means it when it discourages novices from signing up. We ate lunch on the Motu, where the cruise line serves a nice buffet. Bar service, a massage tent and the ship's kayaks are also available. Read Less

Should have worked harder for a tour. Change of schedule meant a lack of time at the port which meant a previously organised private tour to a private island had to be cancelled. (That would have been a 5+ too)

This spot seemed a bit "pre-packaged" and not a lot of local flavor.  Also no good beach so was mainly about short activities, shopping, etc.
