We just walked from the ship along the main street and the locals had their wares laid out on the grass. The roads were full of pot holes and it had been raining so full of water. People were friendly and we didn't feel bothered too

Informative talk and display on the seismic activity of Rabaul and Tanavurvur eruption. Guide was anxious to complete the tour to return for new clients at the dock.

The tour covered a lot of places, some miles apart, roads very rough. Seem to run out of time. Didn’t have time for lunch or we would have missed boat.

We hired a local taxi to take a small group around the key sights close to town. The volcano is interesting and the views from the hill tops is also very good. On the route you can also see the warren of tunnels dug by the Japanese during the war. The harbour is a volcanic crater and it is worth noting the rock formations (volcanic plugs)in the middle of the harbour to realize how large the volcano actually is. Read Less

Again did our own thing. The Australian war history was great to experience. With some other passengers we hired a "taxi". It was a bit worrying watching the driver chew on his beatle nut.
