There's really nothing there, so unless you've got an excursion, you may not want to bother. I took the shuttle bus into Puntarenas, which is a dusty, run down city......Lots of cruisers were disappointed because there were very few shops or restaurants open (it was a Sunday morning), but I just wandered the town with my camera for 30 minutes so I wasn't expecting much. But other than some storefront churches and colourful graffiti, there wasn't much to see. Read Less

It was hot, but I wanted to escape the cold back home and aboard the ship anyway. But there really wasn't much to do here, because it's small. I suspect that a postwoman there scammed me out of $1 by not sending off the postcard and its postage that I bought there to its proper destination. I had the address right. The purser did not have stamps onboard as advertised and did not accept U.S. postage to send a postcard from the ship's location. So I didn't feel like spending much time there at all. Read Less

Would have been better of Azamara had let passengers know ahead of time that lunch would be served after we went through boarding. This port is kind of in the middle of nowhere with virtually no facilities. If you were coming in early stay in Jaco it is about 45 minutes away but there is lots to see and do.

We did not take a shore excursion so this poor rating is for the town of Puntarenas only. There was no shopping available to speak of, except for tourist odds and ends. It was a dirty, poor town.
