I have been here numerous times and thought I would dislike it as too touristy. It was great, the old downtown town is still charming and the sculpture on the Malecon is charming. Lots of tourist stuff, but still a real Mexican city.

A little dull. Have to catch a cab downtown where there's the same shops you find in any other port in Mexico.

The family went to the Sea Life Water Park for our Excursion. This was a disappointment. The water was dirty, park looked run-downed. While the kids had fun, not sure I would go back. Back at the port we decided to look around for some souvenirs. What we found was some very pushy vendors. All saying that they were My Amigo, and that I should come look in their store. Read Less

The zipline tour was the greatest experiense. It's a little scary at first, but trust the guys, they know what they are doing. And you absolutely don't need to be fit or anything. You just sit and enjoy the ride. It's a good thrill. They also had tequilla tasting before the tour, so if you're nervous that'll help you too. Even though it was strange to have tequilla at 10 am. After we were done flying over jungle, they let us have an hour of free time, which we used to have whole lobster ($20) and few margaritas for lunch. Everywhere we had one, we also asked for virgin ones for kids. They enjoyed them as well. There's also a little beach with some slides. But the water was freezing as it should be in the mountain river. On the way back all the kids in the van were playing slug bug game and scaring the driver with their screams. Then we got back on the ship only to go onshore again - just me and my husband. We took the local bus (just gave a dollar to the driver). Got off where we though the tourist area ended and explored the local stores, etc. We were wrong - we were still in the tourist area and everybody was speaking English. We pretended we didn't and had a lot of fun trying to apply our limited Spanish. We speak Russian and it was easy to pretend we don't speak any English. We only bought couple of souvenirs for the kids, but had lot of fun speaking and looking. then we caught a bus back (any bus that says wal-mart) and still had some time before sunset on the ship. DO NOT FORGET THAT THE PORT"S TIME IS ONE HOUR AHEAD OF THE SHIPS TIME. Keep your watch on the ships time, but if you have excursion booked thru a local vendor (we booked via los Veranos online) be very careful about the time. Read Less

We took a cab ($12 for four) to Santiago where we went ATV four-wheeling for about 4 hours through Jiovanis Tours (avalos_nueva@hotmail.com, 314-119-2682). The place the cab drops you off is a roadside hut, but the ATVs are in great shape and the tour of the back country fields, woods, rivers, and towns is fantastic. Bring water and prepare to come back totally dusty. This was really, really fun and worth the money. Again, we booked it separately for $70 apiece, as compared to a group of 20 as a ship-arranged shore excursion for $139 each. We got to go fast and didn't have to wait for the group. Read Less

This was my favorite port by far. It was very beautiful (unlike Mazatlan, which just looks like an industrial port) and our excursion was fantastic. We did "Marietas Island Eco Adventure". We would HIGHLY recommend this tour. We started off in the morning on a catamaran, sailing for 1 1/2 hours out to the Marietas Islands. On the way we stopped numerous times to watch whales and dolphins. The guides were really great about getting in the area of the whales and then turning off the engines so as not to startle the whales. Then we headed out to the islands, where you could snorkel or kayak. After two days of kayaking, I was ready to snorkel. The water a was a little chilly, but you get used to it pretty quickly. The fish in the cove were beautiful, I could have stayed in for hours. Then, you could either go to a private beach or stay on the catamaran. We stayed on board, which was nice, because once they served lunch, almost everyone was at the beach, so there was plenty of room on board to lounge around. On the way back we saw plenty more marine wildlife, dolphins and such. The crew on the catamaran were fantastic, the whole day couldn't have been better!!! Read Less

Our first port was Puerto Vallarta. We were there from 8am-10pm. When we arrived in the morning the NCL Star was already docked. Was a beautiful day. Sunny and a high of 83 degrees. Once the ship cleared customs we were free to get off. This was the only port where you could not take any fruit off. They were stopping everyone and making them throw the fruit away. They were not checking bags just asking. So you could of smuggled some off if you really wanted to. For this port we choose the 4 X 4 Tropical Safari which was 7 hours long. We had a wonderful time. Your limo for the day was a Mercedes Benz all-terrain vehicle. It is open and can get very windy at times. So don't spend too much time on your hair. First they take you to a small Mexican town so you can wonder around and explore. Then they take you off road to the rain forest for a hike. The guide was always looking under rock for critters to show us. It is about a 45 minutes hike. Lots of plants and flowers. Then you are off to a very secluded beach for lunch and some beach time. Also included was a open bar. They drop you off at the pier around 5pm. It was very busy by the pier so we didn't really wonder anywhere else. Sail away was right at 10pm. Read Less

Puerto Vallarta - we did Sea Life Park with dolphin encounter, booked directly with park online. Found a taxi right away for $25 to the park. No issues with taxi at all, felt safe. Sea Life Park was fun - older child enjoyed big slides, and younger child enjoyed the kids play area with shallow water and small slides. Encounter was good - kiss, dance with dolphin, and we got to swim out into pool and dance with the dolphin. Total of about 45 minutes in the water. Very happy with this. Price was great, kids were free when we booked online. Ate lunch at snack bar, not great - but pizza, sandwiches held us over until dinner. Bought the dolphin pics (it says no cameras allowed), started to buy just one of each of us but they made us a deal...We were the last visitors out of the park that day, and still no problem getting a taxi right away and it was $20 back to the ship. We had been to PV 2 times before, so we just got back on the ship and didn't do any night time activities. Had a great family day. Read Less

We planned two different excursions for the family: horseback riding at Rancho Capoma, and the sealion encounter at the Sea Life Water Park. We booked both through Puertovallartatours.com, which cut the price about in half over Carnival prices. The horseback experience (ultimate waterfall ride) was awesome! Our guide, Crazy Tony Nunez entertained us all the way to the ranch with stories and information about life in Mexico. When we got to the ranch, they had a nice little breakfast waiting for us. We were then assigned our horses based on self-reported riding experience. Even the beginner horses were well-fed and spirited, prone to break into a trot at the slightest provocation, but well mannered for the most part. My timid 9 year old was at ease on his "Angelita" right away and loved this excursion the most! The ride was along a beautiful stream, then a walk to a lovely waterfall where a few of us played in the (very cold) water. A different route back to the ranch, where we had a very nice Mexican lunch waiting for us! Delicious! The sealion excursion was less fun. My daughter said the sealion they very briefly interacted with was a little scabby and didn't look well cared for. The water park was fun, though, and they had a good time there. Read Less

As for the ports the first one is Puerto Vallarta and we spent the day at the Krystal (5 star resort) and had a couples 4 hand massages that was positively the best we had ever had..This is done in a tent that sits next to the ocean so you hear the waves while it is happening. It was quite peaceful..They let you use their facilities for the day while using their services . The pool is practically on the beach with a swim up bar and really just a beautiful area....We didn't venture too much in this port as we found the taxis and time share people very pushy and a little scary. They do not take No for an answer and when you say No thank you, they cuss at you...it was a little intimidating with kids... Read Less

In Puerto Vallarta we took the tequila factory and mexican fiesta tour with Princess. It was about 5 1/5 hours and cost $49.00. It was a very good tour with an interesting tour and tasting at the tequila factory and then a fiesta that was somewhat corny but entertaining. We could shop for about 15 minutes at the factory as well as at a small strip mall in town. We did a short tour of Puerta Vallarta and the downtown and had about an hour in the downtown to join a walking tour or venture on our own. We toured around ourselves looking at the lovely statues and sand art on the waterfront. There is a candy ship just off the malecon that has a very good selection of nuts and candies. Our tour guide Paula did a great job with providing information and answering our questions. Read Less
