Meh. Busy, not so pretty, but beers on the beach are cheap (if you ignore the vendors). Make sure you visit the Wal-Mart (yes!) across the street from the port - fun Mexican food, CHEAP tequila; you'll see all the cruise staff there.

We walked from the ship to Krystal. It's an easy walk down the beach from the terminal. There are several resort hotels that line that stretch of beach so we were never concerned about walking with our kids despite the present situation in Mexico. Krystal was very welcoming. We did not pay for a day pass. Just found ourselves a few lounge chairs, ordered drinks and food and swam all day. We did take advantage of the inexpensive massages they offer. Two 75-minute massages for $75. Wonderful!! Read Less

Man has this place grown. Many many high rise condo building's since I had been their six years ago. Aggressive vendors on the beach, made it hard to enjoy walking on the sand. They have maybe the fanciest mall about a three or four block walk from the cruise terminal and wal-mart is close by. You can buy a motor bike here. I don't know if you can bring it on the cruise ship. Read Less

Next day we went to Puerto Vallarta. Instead of a shore excursion, we just walked out passed the vendors and took the city bus to the Malecon, beach and Church of Guadalupe. Cost? 50 cents per person! Bus driver dropped us off right at the beach and church. But you have to tell them exactly where you want to be dropped off or you will end up walking to your destination. The bus drivers both up and back was very helpful. We went into Our Lady of Guadulupe Church. It was beautiful colunms with real gold and marble floors. It was just breathtaking! Then proceed one block south to the tourism office(free) and they will help you with everything! Read Less

Smooth getting on and off the tenders, and lots of maps available to find places to go and see. We chose to go it alone, and walked walked walked. Our Capitan sent everyone a memo alerting us to a cruise ship just ahead of us, who's excursion bus of 22 passengers, were robbed. That was a bit un-nerving so we kept our jewelry & major cards & ID locked in our state room. Loved people watching and taking some wonderful photos. Memories forever. Back on the ship, leaving Puerto Vallarda, we saw several whales near the starboard side / our room side . An amazing time!!! Read Less

This is no Cabo pier as there were just a few peddlers there and most excursions need to take a bus or shuttle from the port, but it was nice and clean. We purchased some tiles from a painter that uses his nails/fingers (which is quite popular as we also saw those in Cabo) and also purchased some vanilla and vanilla beans. The smell is heavenly! My daughter and I went on the Paradise Beach excursion. The weather was a bit overcast but it was a very nice resort. It was beachfront and had nice covered beach chair areas on the beach but we preferred to go by the pool as that area was beautiful and less-crowded (plus peddlers come up to you while on the beach). We pulled up a beach chair and instantly had someone ask us if we wanted anything to drink. Even after he got us drinks, he kept coming back and offering more so we appreciated that since sometimes they give you one and you never see them again. The tour guide was nice and the bus they took us on was very nice and air-conditioned. The lunch buffet was great! Burgers, fries, as well as many Mexican items, like refried beans, tortillas, and other yummy things. Information was given to us about the buffet, about the time to meet in the lobby, and anything else we needed to know by the guide on the bus and I liked that he made sure we all knew it before we got off at the hotel. We rented a panga for the day and went snorkeling and whale watching. The water was full of fish, but visibility was low due to turbulence.

This port is a mixed bag. The city, which is actually a city (compared to Cabo which is strictly a tourist destination), is relatively clean in the areas that we saw on a bus tour. The downtown area has been redeveloped to include a pedestrian boardwalk at the ocean's edge and this was quite beautiful. In addition, nowhere in PV did we encounter any of the vendors that harassed us in Cabo. This was a great relief as the vendors in Cabo had actually frightened our grandkids. All of the hype from guides revolves around the fact that PV was the site of the filming of the 1950s movie "The Night of the Iguana." Only people my age and older knew about the movie, and younger tourists had never heard of it. It's really quite sad that they're still holding it up as the best thing that ever happened to PV, even though is was 6 decades ago. They need to let go of the past and talk about the beauty of the city and what the city has to offer today. Read Less

make sure you go to the downtown area- very quaint lovely waterfront, and great shops -don't try to walk it from the ship, its too far, but its only a $5 taxi ride.

There are two dolphin attractions in PV. We went to Dolphin Discovery. Along with the "Dolphin Encounter" experience, you also get a sea lion show, a dolphin show and several water slides. It was a great experience to swim with, and be pushed by the dolphins. The shows were okay. We didn't take advantage of the water slides. There was some confusion about where we were supposed to meet, but this was likely just due to language issues. I'd recommend this excursion. Read Less
