There is also a little touristy market at the end of the pier where you can by some local crafts and coffee. The town is very close with a pedestrian zone with a market.

Puerto Limon is Spanish for "there is no reason to get off the ship": extremely hot and humid, I imagine it is fine for those who are interested in rain forests. For everyone else, stay indoors.

We signed up for the White Water Rafting. It was great. We got on the nice buses and took us about an hour to get into Costa Rica to the river. We had a nice tour guide, and we learned a lot about Costa Rica. It is a very nice country. A lot of lush trees including lots of banana trees! We got to the rafting facility which is very nice and got ready for rafting. Took a bus down to the river and for about an hour went rafting down the river. It was great! Lots of great rapids. Good for all ages – even beginners. I even jumped in the water – twice! I specifically chose this cruise to go white water rafting in Costa Rica and it was well worth it. Port Limon, I wouldn’t walk around myself. I didn’t see a lot of shopping places, so I think it is best to do a shore excursion. I would certainly return to Costa Rica. Seems like a laid back country. Read Less

Our 2nd shore excursion was the zip line/Canopy tour in Costa Rica. Our tour guide was Rhyan (pronounced Ryan). The bus ride was a little longer then we would have liked but the trip was well worth the adventure! The staff were all about safety. From the harness hookups to the helmets...we were checked and triple checked at each point. Instruction began from the moment we headed out on the bus to the moment before we stepped off the 1st platform. It was glorious! We highly recommend this trip to the young and old. It's even set up for the wheelchair bound guests. Read Less

We toured the Veragua rainforest. We boarded a bus with a narrator-guide for about an hour's ride to the facility. It is very new, opening in July, 2008. We had another wonderful informative guided tour thru the facility, including a ten minute aerial tram ride over the rainforest. We took a short hike to see a waterfall thru a downpour, but we had ponchos in our bag. While waiting for the tram, my husband spotted a poisonous strawberry dart frog several feet below the station. While on the tram, my son pointed out a tree sloth. This is a perfect excursion for kids; in fact, visits by Costa Rican school children are partially funded by the ticket sales. Lots of reptiles, locked up in cages with viewing windows, an open butterfly garden with unusual species, and a dark, dark frog room, where visitors, with a guide, can view nocturnal species. There are educational information boards thru out the park. A simple lunch of fruit, sandwiches, coffee and iced teas was served from a small cafeteria line. There is a gift shop. Bathrooms were very clean and new. Trip back after rain was an adventure as we traveled the rutted and wet dirt one lane road out of the park in our bus. Read Less

We were taken on a tour looking at the natural wildlife, getting to hold a 3 toed sloth, finding howler monkeys; went on a boat tour on the Tortoquero canal and saw beautiful birds, lizards and caymans; also made a roadside stop at a local fruit market and ate wild banana's right off the vines; Charlie Soto was excellent! The port area of Limon itself is nothing to get excited about, but the Veragua Rain Forest (about an hour's drive) was awesome. We booked independent arrangements thru Charlie Soto (Okey Dokey tours), and shared a van with one other couple from our cruise (along with the driver and the tour guide). In addition to touring the rain forest, hiking to a waterfall, enjoying a local lunch (including Costa Rican coffee), our guide also adjusted the itinerary to take us to see a 3-toed sloth, and also to a local grocery store where we picked up five pounds of Costa Rican coffee beans -- an inexpensive gift for friends, and delicious! We were originally booked for a Canopy Tour in Costa Rica. We consulted with the excursion desk on what was best in Costa Rica. The man suggested we go white water rafting. This was our other favorite excursion. Rios Tropicales took great care of us. After we rafted down the Reventazon River we arrived back at their HQ where we had access to showers (freezing cold, but still good because I was covered in mud). They served us a traditional Costa Rican lunch, I am a huge fan of hispanic foods, so I enjoyed this. There was salad, pasta salad, pasta & sauce, beans & rice, yucca, plantains, pork, chicken, etc. They offered a $30 DVD of pictures from our trip down the river. There was a photographer that follow our rafts in a kayak. At first I was apprehensive to order it because it was expensive and I was afraid I would never receive the DVD in the mail. I was very happy when I received the DVD about a week after returning from the cruise. The photos were of very high quality and captured great moments, there were over 100 pictures on the disc. While pricey, it was well worth it. I was unable to get those same photographs with my waterproof camera. Read Less

We have visited this port before and were familiar with the surroundings so chose to do our own walking tour. We visited a large local market as well as a number of more modern shops. To our amusement we again found a tiny beauty salon in the middle of which is growing a large tree (painted to match the interior color of the shop!) Most of the locals speak English so communication is not a problem. These folks are not pushy to sell you something and in fact are very accommodating. Read Less
