We'd booked an excursion, Cahuita through the eyes of a naturalist, but it was cancelled. There is really not much in Puerto Limon if you don't book a tour; we were docked at the commercial pier which required a pretty good walk to get to the port exit. Not a great port unless you do a tour. ...
Unless you are into the rainforest.....not much to do here. The infrastructure is very poor so getting around is difficult and the streets are dirty. However, the locals we interacted with seemed very friendly and engaging. Even after you had made a purchase they were more than willing to talk to you about their area....something you don't always see. ...
There is a small market at the port but not a whole lot to do in Limon itself. We got a tour guide for $40 a person for the day and headed south.

We just went around town. Really, you can do all your souvenir shopping in the plaza attached to the port. Beyond that, there's a cafe that has wifi, otherwise there's just local shops and restaurants. We actually enjoyed go through town as we got a feel for the culture, food, and sounds. There's also a nice park near the port, lined with palm trees with a nice view of the ocean. ...
