332 Puerto Quetzal (Antigua) Cruise Reviews

We took the Antigua On Your Own bus transfer. The on board guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. We were very impressed that a flat tire caused only a 15 minute wait for a replacement bus to whisk us back to the ship on time.

We took the Antigua on your own. They never should haver ran this cruise that day. Anitigua was jammed with people due to a festival. It was utter chaos, and the tour operator was disorganized and nearly left us and several people behind. it was hot and humid and we had to rush for 2.5 miles of walking without water, even though they said it would be 4.5 blocks. They said they'd leave us behind if we were not at the designated point on time. Lots to complain about this in this texcursion Read Less

Took the Rum tasting tour and walk-about of the town. Took bus to the city. There were religious observations going on but these added to the allure of the visit.

We took a bus ride outside the city to a coffee plantation. It was very interesting. We were lucky enough to have the owner as our guide. She inherited the farm from her father who inherited it from his grandmother, her great-grandmother. We opted to change to this tour instead of the city tour we originally booked. There was a large celebration in the city and the cruise line was warning against pickpockets in the large crowd. We didn't want to deal with that. Read Less

Ancient city and lots to see. Be prepared to get approached MANY times by those wishing to see you items. We simply said “no gracias” over and over again and they respected us.

The market at the Port was nice, however, Antigua is 90 minutes from port and it was passion day, so most of the tours were just dropping people off at the city gate.

-Puerto Quetzal Guatemala - After reading on the state department website that this was a level 2 place to not visit, we had decided to not do an excursion. there is a really big market area right at the port area where you can really walk around safely. But after being at the port for a bit.. we started chatting with a gentleman who offered us a tour to Antigua. We did go, and am glad we did. You fell like you stepped back in time 200 years in Antigua. There is gorgeous architecture, and a volcano well within view. We ate at a great little bar and had the best tuna sandwich ever! Tuna is one of Guatemala's major exportations, so it was delicious! It is not the safest place, and the tour operator had extra security following us around the markets and streets.. but we never felt un-safe. They did a great job and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and are very happy we "risked it" and went. Read Less

We did the RCCL excursion "Auto Safari Chapin' which was a drive-through safari with a walking part through the rest of the zoo after. We were on a giant coach bus, which made for some 'interesting' navigating through the narrow gateways between exhibits. Also, if you were on the 'wrong' side of the bus in a particular exhibit area, you didn't get pictures. Smaller vans would have probably been better. At one point, the bus let us off to feed the giraffes from raised platforms. Guests could buy branches with leaves to feed the giraffes for 2 dollars. That was fun. The walk through part of the zoo had a lot of different animals, and some 'cats' I have never seen before at zoos in the US. Plus, the ride to the zoo was only about 45 minutes, while most other excursions had rides of at least 90-120 minutes just to get to the location. Read Less

We did the Mayan Experience here, because it was a 9 hour tour with a 2 1/2 bus ride there and back, I booked through Royal. It was a long bus ride but very interesting, we had a terrific guide with great information. We headed through the plains up into the volcanoes, we even saw where the highway and a village were destroyed by the lava flows last June. Then the bus wound trough narrow streets in villages, it was almost heart stopping. Our guide spend a lot of time explaining Mayan culture (60% of Guatemala is Mayan). We arrived at the ruins and toured a small museum. Then our guide took us to the far end, come to find out there was a Mayan ritual in progress there and we were able to observe. The second bus started at the front of the ruins and totally missed the ritual. it was very interesting. I also enjoyed learning the history of the ruins and Mayas. We then stopped at a very nice restaurant for late lunch before returning to the ship. Read Less

Guatemala, the land of volcanoes. We were surprised to take a small bus. Really small. Of course, that's because the streets in Antigua are tiny tiny tiny. Our cruise tour was very knowledgeable and shared some of the challenges faced in living there. The small co-op we toured before the city, had some of the most beautiful weaving I have ever seen. All by hand, as did the coffee roasting. Would love to return to Guatemala. Don't miss seeing the chicken buses - every district or route has a different paint scheme. Read Less

There was a ship shuttle which took us to a small group of stalls. We had expected to see a town but were told the nearest town was a one and a half hour taxi ride away.

We signed up for the bus right to/from Antigua. We decided to cancel because the ride was anywhere from 1.5-2 hours each way. I get car sick really easy and I didn't want to get into one more crowded bus/van.
