We love Porto, but prefer the opposite bank with all the traditional port houses.

Hired a Tuk Tuk tour independently which was excellent. Would highly recommend. We travelled by taxi to and from ship as transfers were very poor! Fabulous town with lots of interesting shops and bars - would go back for a short break.

Side trip to Taylor's wine was a lot of fun and a beautiful place. Could not believe the huge number of wine casks.

Did our own thing. Had a nice walk around, it is very hilly so be warned if you have any mobility issues.

Loved Porto. It's a hot mess of a city but quite unique. Took a Red Line, hop on hop off (HOHO) bus from the port in Leixoes to Porto. Got off in the central square and found our way to several interesting sites. The one I liked the most was the Church of San Francisco ("Church of Gold"). Highlight of our day in Porto was having lunch, with a glass of porto, by the Duoro with lovely views of the river and the Dom Luis bridge. The waterfront area in Porto in the Cais de Ribiera is lovely. A couple of warnings - first, Porto has very steep hills. By getting off at the Aliados Square HOHO stop we managed to walk mostly downhill to different sites, so that worked out well. Also note that the Red Line HOHO can sometimes be a "Blue Line" HOHO, i.e. red bus but with small "blue line" sign in the front window. We took a Red bus from downtown to return to the port thinking it was Red Line bus but it turned out to be a Blue Line bus that took us over to the wrong side of the river. Then later, when we finally got on the right Red Line HOHO, it wound around the central area with several stops before finally heading back to the port. And as it turns out the Red Line HOHO does not go all the way back to the port. At the end you have to get off and then wait for another Red LIne shuttle to take you back to the port. All that to say that the HOHO's can be quite an adventure! Read Less

Very beautiful and Ullrich of tourists. Make sure to bookmark a porto cave visit ahead of time more avoid disappointment. Grahams can take you in without a reservation. It is a bit of a hike to get to, but quite rewarding view.

Porto a 20 minute trip from the Leixoes, so you'll need a transfer one way or another. Porto is a beautiful city, houses covered in decorative tiles, and some churches with spectacular tile paintings on the external walls. The railway station is also amazing with floor to ceiling tiles. The cathedral is OK, but not nearly as spectacular as some of the other churches (Igreja do Carmo worth a look inside and out, Igreja Monumento de Sao Francisco - quite plain on the outside, interior is spectacular - but no photographs). Douro River runs through the city, lots of places to eat and good views of the city from the Luis Ist Bridge. Would definitely go back Read Less
