This is a lovely city. For us, the trouble was that it was very very busy. The shuttle is a necessity because the cruise terminal is well away from the City. We were dropped off at the top of it, amidst the loudest emergency vehicle sirens we had ever heard. And trams rumble about with apparent scant regard for inexperienced pedestrians. However, with a map it is not difficult to walk to the river. Find the stairs beside the bridge and it is an enjoyable walk down to the river. Take a river trip. It is lovely. Not expensive and, with the walk up the hill again, it may be enough for you. It was for us. Read Less

We visited the oldest synagogue in Porto and heard a presentation about its history. We than had an hour walking tour through the streets of Porto which housed Jewish people over the centuries

Enjoyed the tour -- tour was to short -- did not allow enough time for shopping and walking around. Not enough time in Port -- need to allow more time in Port so you can enjoy Porto.

Taxis were available as soon as you left the pier area. We took a taxi to the Sandeman Port Distillery and had a magnificent day. We had to email directly to the Sandeman distillery from the website to reserve places for our tour, but they responded within 24 hours and when we arrived our names were on the list. Lexios, the port the ship docks at is about 20 minutes by cab to Porto. We didn't use the ship excursion because they wouldn't specify which distillery they were taking people to and we wanted a very special type of tour. We had a great day and would highly recommend Sandeman, the cable car ride, the walk across the bridge, and then a bit of shopping. Make sure your cab driver knows where your ship is docked because there is a new port and an old port docking in Lexios. We had no trouble. Read Less

Our favourite stop on this cruise, picked up the coach after an hours wait which gave us chance to take a look around the nearby beach, very clean. We got onto the pre arranged (in Vigo) our tours4cruisers bus, again a brilliant commentary, smooth ride around tight roads. A very interesting city seen during three stops. €15 a head, we saw enough to convince us that a return visit would be worthwhile Read Less

Loved this place. Would never have visited here, but it was so pretty. Loads of narrow windy streets, full of bars and boutique hotels. All lead to a beautiful river side. Lovely buildings now used for bars and restauarants, all reasonably priced. Take a river cruise to learn a bit of history and see the view, €12. We will return here on our own for a long weekend. Options seemed to be a) get the port bus, which takes you out the commercial port. Then, I assume, get a taxi bus or metro into centre. B) take the free shuttle which lasts about 35 minutes into town. This was easy enough after a 20 minute wait outwards. No queue coming back around 45 minutes before the last bus, which runs back every 15 minutes. Read Less

Leixoes is a pleasant but provincial town on the coast of Portugal. Had the weather been kind I've no doubt we would have enjoyed the town a lot more, especially after two days at sea crossing the Bay of Biscay! Unfortunately, it rained heavily during the morning and by the time we were due to leave the weather was only just fairing up. However, we visited the local shops and had a very pleasant coffee and cake on the main street. Oporto is some way from Leixoes and easily accessible by Metro but since our time was limited and we'd been before we didn't go there. Read Less
