I loved Penang. We had teamed up with some people who had arranged for a taxi driver to take us around for the day. We went up Penang Hill first thing. We booked VIP tickets which were definitely worth the few extra Ringits. It meant we didnt have to queue in the heat and also meant we were in the front car which gave us the best views of the funicular railway and the mountain. The facilities at the top of the hill are a bit chaotic and very busy so make sure you leave plenty of time if you want to have a coffee or a snack while you are up there. The views are awesome so dont forget your camera. We then went on a tour of the local area, which included some brilliant pieces of street art, and some great street food. Our driver was very knowledgeable and made sure we saw most of the main attractions. Again, I would love to go back and have more time to explore the back streets and experience some more food treats. Taxis are fairly cheap in Penang but the streets are very busy so don't underestimate the time that you will spend getting from A to B. Its also commonsense to get away from the port area before you start to haggle with the local drivers regarding tours. 100 Ringits is about the most you should pay for a full day tour including stops at the local park and the driver should arrange to wait for you at Penang Hill. Caught the public bus to Penang Hill cost 60 cents then went up the funicular for a really nice view. Came back and walked to the clan jetties which was interesting but smelly.

Penang is a shoppers paradise, lots of shopping centres, little india to see walking in Historic town, very pretty indeed. Shoes and sandals are so cheap, buy plenty of them.

Booked via local taxi company which is placed in the terminal. You receive a proper receipt and special phone number in case you may questions on the driver's behaviour (which acts like a quality guarantee). Great service, highly recommendable as we had a Malay driver with Chinese descent and we received an excellent historical tour and eventually a little beach treat. Read Less

We walked from the ship to the Clan Jetties and wandered around then got the free Hop on Hop off bus nearby and did a complete 45 min round tour then walked to Little India - fascinating. Had lunch and a great cup of coffee at Bistro Tang which has also boutique accommodation. We were keen to find some of the street art and indeed it was nearby and worth seeing. Read Less

- Woke up early and watch the ship docked at Swettenham Pier Cruise terminal in Penang. Our rooms directly face the port so we get a nice view of George Town.- Went for breakfast and proceed to disembark. Basically just need to scan our seapass card to exit the ship.- There are some pirates waiting just outside the ship for photo session.- Meet up with our driver/tour Guide from Ocean Jupiter for our Penang sightseeing tour in 9 seater van. (40 RM per hour. Min 5 hours).- Our driver is Mr. Michael Fong who is extremely knowledgeable and very friendly (highly recommended).- He took us around George Town. First stop is the Pinang Peranakan Museum (Green Mansion). - It is a beautifully preserved peranakan mansion with original furnitures and fixtures. The best peranakan museum I have been to. (much better than the Singapore one).- Then he took us to eat loh bak from a famous stall, followed by chendol, char kway teow from the 2 sisters and air itam Penang laksa. On hindsight, we should have taken a light breakfast (or even skip it).- Next stop is Kek Lok Si temple. We went straight to the top unlike the tour buses that stop at the bottom and require the passengers to climb all the way up the stairs.- Next stop is a shop selling Penang Tau sar piah.- Last stop is the Penang Butterfly Farm. This place is quite far and took us almost 1 hour to reach. But along the way we get to see beautiful Penang beach along Batu Ferringhi.- Michael informed us that the butterfly farm will be closed on 8 March till December 2015 for renovation so we were quite lucky to see it before it’s closed.- We actually wanted to do some shopping but due to time constraint we decided to return to the ship. The all aboard time is 5:30 PM and sail away at 6 PM.- We reached the ship around 5:20 PM. We went straight to the balcony to watch the sail away. We waited till around 6 PM and saw that the crews have not closed the gangway. Then we saw a group of tardy passengers taking their own sweet time to board the ship and finally the crews closed the gangway and the ship is ready to leave.- Tonight dinner at MDR is special because they served NY Strip steak!!! The wife and I had 1 serving each and another 1 serving to share. Our best dinner on the ship. (We did not want to spend money eating at Chop or Giovanni). Read Less
