Little down at heel, with some beautiful buildings, such as old theatres, closed. Lovely Cathedral and Parliament buildings within walking distance. Get a map from the Tourist Information, just over the crossing outside the port.

Supposed to have been Trapini but due to bad weather had to divert to more southerly port and excursion was cancelled. Walked around the town and took an open top bus tour, did not find an awful lot to see.

Port is closed to the main district which is nice. Catherale Di Palmero is a good place to visit. Try the local sparkling drink called "Bio", it is pretty tasty.

Palermo was tied for worst with Marsaille. Get out of the city of Palermo to get a feel of the real Sicily. The people are not friendly and it is just a big city. It is not representative of Sicily. I am 100% Sicilian American and have been to Sicily twice before. Palermo is always the least favorite of my visits. Go to Santa Rosalia or Monreale if you can. Those places are definitely worth the drive. Read Less

We took a taxi tour with our friends €120 for 6 adults and 2 children. Saw most of the sights over 2 hours and had a wander round the food market.

We walked from the boat to the old town. It was kinda far, but able to do with 2 kids (12 & 8). We walked until we found some food. Then just walked in the old town area around the palaces and ate street food. I did not take an excursion. But not sure if there was enough interest to take one. It is an easy port stop to walk from the boat into town and back on your own. Read Less

Easy to walk from the port to the city centre. Not my favourite Italian city and if you haven't been to Sicily before I'd recommend joining an excursion.

We took a private day tour to Cefalu and Monreale. Cefalu is a cute little beach town and Monreale has some tremendous views and a truly beautiful cathedral. Our guide took us into Palermo for lunch, which took way too much time. In retrospect, I wish we had had more time to just walk by ourselves in Palermo, maybe just taxiing to Monreale for a quick visit. I was expecting these towns to be more like the small towns at the other end of Sicily, Taormina and Castelmolo. Read Less

However I did venture ashore and ended up in a new patisserie along the first block of sho p s you come to on exiting the port gates (go right) they had been open a week and were charming! So much so I had my picture taken with them behind the counter!!! Might think about a working holiday there!0 Read Less

Like Naples, the city is dirty. Don't take a cab or carriage ride as they will rip you off. The hop on hop off tour was also a rip off as you were kicked off after one trip.
