You need to ignore, the scruffy aspects to Palermo.........there are plenty of them. But there are plenty of outstanding aspects to the city and island. Over the centuries much wealth was in a small number of hands - so there are fabulous buildings, churches, theatres fountains and other features. Teatro Massimo opera house is a must! Again on this visit we found the people friendly, cafe/street food super, we admire their resilience coping with adversity. We had a great day in Palermo. Read Less

We booked a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus tour. In all fairness, Palermo isn’t the prettiest city, but there are some interesting landmarks and sights throughout. This tour was a good way to see these sights in a kid friendly way. Read Less

Easy to walk from the port to the city centre. Not my favourite Italian city and if you haven't been to Sicily before I'd recommend joining an excursion. Read Less

The main city was not great but we then took a taxi to Mondello Beach and it was fantastic. Clear shallow water perfect for swimming. Excellent lunch with fresh swordfish and octopus. Read Less

Had planned what we would see and printed a map in England prior to coming and glad i did as the one from the ship was virtually useless! We walked 20 minutes from the ship until we came to the main road (Via Vittorio Emanuele). We then walked through a little park with amazing trees (huge with massive roots - must have been hundreds and hundreds of years old - very impressive). We then carried on the main road then on to the fountain and main squares and went into several little churches (la Marorana, Santa Caterina and Dai Teatini) – Martorana in particular had some amazing mosaics and fantastic ceilings. We then came back out onto main street to the four corners (magnificent buildings and small fountain) then carry on the main road to Palermo cathedral on the right. We paid extra to do the jewels, catacomb and climb on to the roof (the view from the roof was excellent but they only let a few people up at a time so we had to wait about 20 minutes for this section). We could not find a bus back and most of the taxis seemed to have been pre-booked - eventually a taxi driver kindly phoned in to his office and booked us a taxi back to the ship Read Less

Very dirty and run down, didn't enjoy this at all, apart from a great fruit, fish and vegetable market that we found. Filthy streets, one rubbish collector pushing garbage around from one place to another. Not very into cathedrals etc, as at our age, we've seen a lot of places around the world. Read Less
