A two hour bus ride from the Newark Sheraton due to excessive traffic mostly trhough what appeared to be a large building/redevelopment site. Rather chaotic arrangements for luggage when we arrived at the giant tent for embarkation. As we had priority with a Grand Suite booking we were quickly on the ship though despite being herded onto another bus onec we had checked in.         Read Less

It was easy getting off the ship. You can see the Statue of Liberty so if you get up early, you pass by. It was less expensive for us to rent a limo and fly out of Kennedy than Newark. FYI.

Cape Liberty was a good experience not hard to get to and the shuttle bus to the ship was nice. People were very friendly and helpful. The only issue is when you return to find a porter to help with the bags.

There were 2 complaints about this port. The first negative aspect of this port is the traffic entering the port. On departure day, we were 1 hour in line waiting to be dropped off by our taxi. The second negative aspect is the unfortunate need to "shuttle" you from the terminal to the ship (and back). This added to the feeling of being cattle, queued up once again to be moved somewhere. I've cruise out of Cape Liberty before, and I like it. A five day cruise from this port will cost you about $100 for parking. It's minutes from Newark Airport and not too far from New York City. RCL's ships leave from this port, so Carnival and NCL leave from NYC. Princess Cruise Leave from Brooklyn. When your arrival at the post, you drop off your passengers and luggage and then proceed to the parking area. The area where you check is located somewhat far from the ship, so shuttles buses bring you to and from the ship. Read Less

Embarkation was a breeze. Went through the check in with no problems. Lines moved quickly and the agents were very organized. At the scanners for the carry on luggage, the agent asked what glass bottles I had in my bag, I unzipped and showed her the three small champagne bottles. She said "you will have to take these over to the table for the corkage fee--oh wait he isn't there---enjoy" and waved me through! Sweet! Another plus at embarkation is the clean restrooms and plenty of seating in the waiting area. Also complimentary orange juice and ice water. Disembarkation was a bit more of a hassle. Most of the ship opted to carry off their own luggage. We did that two years ago on the NCL Spirit and it was disastrous! This time we opted for the first time set of colored tags. We needed to wait until the carry your own luggage walk offs were done, but then we got a porter for our luggage and sailed through customs, right up to the cab and were on our way to Port Authority for our bus at 11:00 home. The embarkation and disembarkation is really fast and well handled. The one problem I find is getting to this area namely the traffic lights when turning into the drive to the dock area. This light is a problem as it only allows 3-4 cars through turning left into the drive. Takes a long time here. The bus run to the ship is no problem that we have found, but we are taking a disabled person with us in December 2011 and we will find out how this works then. The drivers and staff are really efficient and concerned with our safety. Thanks to all. Read Less

Check in at the Port in New Jersey was a breeze, much easier than Florida. We arrived a couple hours early but were allowed to check our luggage and were escorted to a waiting area with a television, drinks, and cookies to snack on while we waited. It wasn't long at all before we got checked in and boarded our shuttle to the ship. Unfortunately debarkation wasn't as smooth. There were not enough custom agents and the lines were long. Read Less

Embarkation: Looked chaotic, but actually went pretty fast. I came up from Baltimore via Amtrak, the first time I have not flown to a departure port. From the Eastern Shore of Maryland, using the Wilmington rather than BWI Amtrak station would have been faster and cheaper. I also heard about a bus from Baltimore that drops passengers off right where RCCL assumes responsibility for their bags. This might be the best option of all if you have trouble handling bulky bags. There is a tendency to pack more with no airline weight restrictions and Redcaps can be hard to find. I did take a cab from Penn Newark and it cost $48.00 plus tip, exactly what I read on the Cruise Critic site. It was almost dark when we got away from the dock. We went on deck to see the lights of the city and it was frigid. I had a hat, scarf and gloves plus my coat and still could not stand it for very long. I was worried about the first two sea days being cold, but even the first day out was much warmer and quite comfortable in the sun and out of the wind. Labadee: The one and only day of bad weather during the entire cruise occurred in Labadee. It rained hard for pretty much the entire visit. I ventured off between showers and hurried back aboard before the real downpour started. Debarkation: We got our numbers in the process the night before. Members in our party had different times, but our room steward made it possible for all of us to go at the same time. We gathered where told and were soon off the boat. Our bags were easily found among a fairly small group of bags. I remember this having been a problem in the past, so I think having smaller groups of bags is a very big help. We found a ride to Penn Newark on the spot at less than $20.00 person, and even waiting for the cab to fill, we were still at the station an hour and a half early for our 11:51 train. Fortunately we were able to find a Redcap to handle all the bags and get us seated together. Read Less

Cape Liberty Cruise Port is in a very industrial area with not much to do. The check-in process is very smooth, and the terminal to hip shuttle can be replaced with an easier process.
