With all the hassles we had with visas, was beginning to wonder why we bothered. But what a fascinating city! Elephanta Caves are well worth the time for a visit.

We had been to India before and therefore knew what to expect. We did a 5 hour coach trip from the ship. This took in a Jain temple (interesting), Gandhi's house which was awful as there were about 300 people trying to walk round a very small building. Could not wait to get out of the place and they had allowed 3/4 hour for this stop. Most people were bored waiting for their coach. The most interesting things to see were the Gateway of India and the Dhobi Ghat laundry. The least interesting thing to see was the handing gardens. You could easily have left these out and reduced the trip by a good half and hour. The guide was very informative. Read Less

You can walk to a lot of sights but if you want to get around take a Took Took or a Taxi. The outside Laundry is a must see.

With a day and a half in port enjoyed two contrasting experiences. One was a city tour that included the now renamed Price of Wales Museum, the India gate with a backdrop of the Taj hotel and Gandhi's home away from home in Mumbai. The other experience was out to Elephanta Island that not only exposes you to the ancient treasures on the island but gives one an intimate sea view of Mumbai and especially India Gate and the Taj. The port ran a shuttle bus from the ship to the main entry gate. From here you can negotiate with taxi drivers for a city tour for $15.00 to $20.00 USD per person. This was our second visit to Mumbai, so we chose to walk to the local markets and Victoria Train station which was a 20-minute stroll away. There were also several souvenir shops within a few blocks of the cruise terminal gate. We were supposed to take a tour to Elephanta Caves, but it was cancelled due to rough sea conditions. Read Less

Very crowded, oppressive, depressing. I'm glad I saw it but wouldn't rush to go back. High point was Ghandi's house. Low point was Dhobi Gat.

I would advise any passenger arriving in this port to go on an organised excursion, whether this be with the ship or a company that can enter the port and pick you up from the ship. India is quite manic with lots of hustle and bustle. As a seasoned travellers generally we are happy to do our own thing but in India you do need something organised up front. There is a lot of poverty here, as there can be in much of India although Mumbai is a lot cleaner than many other cities. There a lots of nice colonial architecture and some interesting history. The fish market is something else but an experience to see.No shops or anything at the port and no shuttle from the ship to the port entrance. Read Less
