Montevideo, Uruguay is a real yawner of a stop. There is not much to do or see here. We would have liked to have visited some wineries but the private tours were over $400 each. The ship did have a tour of one winery with lunch included for $160, but as we suspected, the winery was more of a 'box wine' commercialized venue than a serious vineyard. We walked around town and ate some barbeque at the covered mall just one block from the ship and called it good. Read Less

Called into Port on a Sunday. All main shops closed as museums. Took sightseeing bus, which was good value for money. We found, however, that the City was littered with garbage!

The capitol of Uruguay with a population of about 1,320,000 is a charming city with many beautiful colonial buildings. The ships dock right in the city center. In the port area is a WiFi hotspot and Internet place and directly outside at the tourist information is another hotspot. There are several naval exhibitions, one about the German battle ship Graf Spee which sank off Montevideo in 1939. Around the old market hall are craft stalls with nice things but they are also pricy. The market hall is full of eateries. The waft of roasted meat was killing; the big grills were full of steaks, sausages, and all kinds of pieces of meat and some vegetables too. The atmosphere is great and worth the steep prices. The narrow streets are lined with 18th and 19th century buildings in different European building styles. The plazas were lovely (Zabala, Constitucion, Independencia ) with blooming trees, monuments and a fountain. The shops are interesting, so are the stalls with antiques and crafts. There is a hop-on-hop-off bus but it is easy to walk around and everything is close by. Dollars are accepted everywhere. Read Less

Great city - loads to see and do. The Port Market is a must. Take a private tour to get best value - can recommend Bruno from Tours By Locals.

Old City (Ciudad Vieja) very quaint and very quiet (we were there on a Saturday) but in sad disrepair. We had a private walking tour which was quite interesting. The port market was very busy but we didn't spend much time there.

Walked to the downtown and shopped in modern and clean facilities. Took a tour of the Jewish synagogs and holocaust memorial. Excellent, and our guide was extremely informative. Beautiful city.

A very nice, relatively clean and safe city to wander around in. Seemed in better shape than either Santiago or Buenos Airies.
