we walked off the ship and there were travel companies offering tours for $20US each. We decided to do it and were very glad we did. It was a small mini bus and we were able to get out at each stop for as long as we wanted to take pictures. It included a 30 minute stop at an indoor market and ended with the Montevideo sign. Walked around city on my own , easy enough to get around on foot however some place only accepted local currency (no usd or cards) such as the theatre.

We docked really close to the old town, so it was really easy to go ashore and explore. Sadly, it was very wet the day we were there, so we only managed a short walk in the afternoon.

Montevideo (alongside) We wandered around a rather decrepit part of town to a flea market in the main square. Sellers here accept pesos or US dollars and their prices are reasonable. On our way back to the dock we explored the meat market. Part of the inner harbour seems to be a ship graveyard – there must be a fortune in scrap metal here! TIP: Montevideo is perhaps best known for the Battle of the River Plate that took place during WWII. On the dock you can examine the recovered rangefinder from the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee, the vessel that was at the centre of the battle before being scuttled by her captain. Read Less

Hot and sunny when we went in October. Wandered around the "old city" where the ship docked. Very interesting old colonial buildings but a lot of them were very run down and didn't appear to be in use. Felt very safe and lots of directions to help us get around. People all very friendly. Walked to the "new city" but very hot and busy so we walked back again! As usual, we were very lucky with the weather and just wandered about and sat in the few places of shade we found. Strangely, lots of dogs wandering about. Read Less

We did a 12 mile walk around to just get a sense of the city. The older, touristy area is pleasant as is the Rambla that goes on forever (bring sunscreen).

We walked around town and enjoyed it very much. Find the indoor mall like area near the pier and have a grilled meat lunch.

Walked the city as we'd been here before. Local markets and food vendors busy with lots of grilling meat smells. Street entertainers too.
