We opted for an Internet company for our Road to Hana excursion purely on the basis of cost, $210 for two, picnic lunch included as opposed to $298 and lunch available for purchase. We went with Valley Isle Excursions and had a great time. The scenery, commentary and lunch proved to be a delightful experience and great value for money. The winery we visited had probably the worst wine we have ever tasted but it was an experience. We also did the Maui Plantation & Iao Valley excursion offered by NCL. While we enjoyed what was offered we subsequently found out that we could have done the same thing for half the cost independently. Read Less

Maui- day 1. We rented a car through Discount Hawaii. Cheap prices, good service, no problems. We drove the road to Hana. Which many books & reviews made it sound like it would be difficult. I did all the driving & did not find that to be true. Yes, you have to take it slow & drive smart, but we had a dry beautiful day, it was lovely. The road to Hana is an all day event. Pack a lunch, figure out some of the places you for sure want to stop before you go. There is so much to see, one beautiful waterfall after another, lush greenery, black sand beaches, roadside stands. It is hard to drive all the way to Hana without stopping frequently. Our original plan was to drive to Hana, and make all the stops on the way back. It did not really work out that way -- it was just to beautiful. We tried to keep the stops to a minimum, figuring we would be able to pick & choose our stops along the way back. We started at about 9 am once we had our car & got back to the ship about 7:45 pm. It was a long day, but very much worth it. You can get a map or a CD in any local gas station. We did not do the CD, but others did and said it was helpful. Maui - day 2. I really wanted to do snorkeling at Molikini Crater but did not want to go on a 'cattle boat' tour. After some searching, we found the Trilogy. This is a nice Catamaran that will take you out morning or afternoon. Morning is recommended for the best snorkeling, but you have to be at the small boat harbor at 6:30am. This is what we did. And the snorkeling was magnificent. First off, the crew of Trilogy is the most hospitable I have ever encountered. (I work in the industry in a large hotel, so I know what it takes to take care of your guests). Captain Brett, Danielle, Mike & Jacob were all fantastic. Captain Brett keeps it light & funny, but goes over the important rules you need to know before setting sail. Once under sail, the crew starts service which includes juice, coffee or tea, fresh fruit and straight out of the oven cinnamon rolls! Yummy! Once reaching Molikini we had an hour to snorkel. The Catamaran has stairs in the center, it is very easy to get in and out of the water. They have a crew member on a surf board at all times keeping an eye on everyone. Here we saw tons of sea life, including Yellow Tang, Moorish Idols, Angelfish, Trumpet Fish, Trigger fish & more. The hour went by too fast. After we set sail for our next stop, lunch was served. Salad, chicken, rice, rolls - simple but fresh and more than we could possible eat. Next stop, Turtle Town, snorkeling along the 3 fingers of lava. Lots of sea life and yes, I swam right next to a Turtle! Again, the hour passed too quickly. We set sail back to the harbor and dessert of ice cream and chocolate sauce was served. We had a lovely sail back but eventually they had to pull in the main and then the jib because it got so windy. I can not say enough about the wonderful, hospitable crew of the Trilogy. Special shout out to Danielle, who I think had a big part in running the ship (LOL). After we returned to port, we still had our car, so we took a drive out to Kaanapali where all the big resorts are. It was a whole different side to Maui than what we had seen so far. We both agreed we enjoyed the old Maui of Hana & the snorkeling better. Read Less

We took a ship's tour here for whale watching and since this is a tender port, and we had the first tour of the day, we were picked up right from the Golden's tender stage. The boat we were on had seen better days, but the captain was extremely knowledgeable about where the whales would be, and we were very fortunate to see large numbers of them, often from only a few metres away. After the 2.5 hr tour, the boat dropped us at La Haina harbour and we spent the rest of the day strolling the street, visiting art galleries, museums, etc. The only down side to the day's events was the extremely long line to catch a tender back to the ship. As I can recall, the ship's departure was delayed for at least an hour because of the slowness of getting people back on board. Read Less

We found Richard De Leon with Hawaiian Eyes Tours, www.hawaiian-eyes.com. We booked both days with him on Maui. He takes you all the way around on the one lane dirt roads on Maui on the ISO trip and the Hana trip. Tendered into our Maui port on a gorgeous day after a short delay due to large swells - walked thru town, saw the huge Banyan Tree, walked to Hilo Hattie's (I took the shuttle back, hubbie walked.) Had to make at least ONE stop at Hattie's on the trip. Did some geocaching right near the tender pier. (its hard to load people on a tender that is bobbing up and down as much as 7 feet at a time) Also enjoyed the music and dancing of the gracious ladies and senior citizens of Lahaina as we got off the tender. Oh yes, and a delicious pina colada shaved ice up on the main street of town. Read Less

We had 2 days in Maui and decided to take the road to Hana on day one, and see the Haleakala sunrise on a bicycle tour for day 2. The road to Hana is EXTREMELY winding and took the entire day. I was also very carsick before we got back. In hindsight I wish we would have just taken it for about an hour, then come back and spent some time on the beaches. Haleakala was stunning. It's amazing watching the sun come up over the crater. Just be forewarned that it is FREEZING!!! Probably about 40 degrees with an absolutely relentless wind. The bicycle tour we took didn't require you to stay with a group and it was fun seeing the sights and we even stopped for coffee on our leisurely "ride". (You basically just coast all the way down the mountain.) Read Less

Watching the ship come into port was great. The captains are very skilled in handling such a large vessel. We had two days on Maui (Sun/Mon). Our first excursion of the five that I had booked through NCL was the Hana Sky Trek. Blue Hawaiian helicopter flight to Hana with Chris as our pilot, then a pickup by Skipper in the little coach to be driven around Hana, have a tablecloth setting lunch provided for us, then stop offs at various scenic spots on the winding roadway back to the cruise ship. This trip was magical as we were the only ones on it. With the helicopter ride, they had mentioned being able to buy a video of our flight but getting out at the Hana airport didn't allow for that. (I was able to contact Blue Hawaiian once we got back to Honolulu and they sent a copy to our mailing address. They say that they hold the footage for about a month afterwards.) Our second excursion was a day of snorkelling at Molokini Crater. The crew on the boat we went out on were great. They offered wetsuit tops (for a fee of course). We used them and we happy. However when we did another snorkelling trip on Kona, the wetsuits weren't offered and we managed fine. They provided all sorts of flotation devices so even a novice swimmer would enjoy it. A highlight was when the boat anchored at Turtle Bay and I had a turtle come up at arm's length and swam beside me for several minutes. After we came back to dock, they dropped us off at a small shopping centre which had some good tourist shops. Read Less
