Enjoyed this port because it was a city in the middle of nowhere. We traveled miles and miles up the amazon to finally arrive a this nice city. It is a typical Brazilian city. Didn't really care for this city of 2 million plus. But on the other hand, it was safe and worth visiting. Shore excursions, like a rain forest jungle hike a short river run from the city was excellent. ...
A city with a population of 2.5 million... the Opera House is worth a visit ($3.50 for seniors).
Be careful and do not wear any jewelry onshore (2 passengers were mugged - one at knife-point.. both okay, but did loose jewelry).
Always carry an umbrella... when it rains... IT RAINS !!! ...
I might have the wrong port but it was in Turkey. Loved this place. Took a taxi from port to town and then walked to the palace. Three euros. lots of great pictures. There is a great gift shop right outside with and old woman who insists you call her MAMA. She drags you into the shop. She was a lot of fun and had some great stuff.
