KITTYWAKE TOURS! That is all you need to know about what to do in gorgeous Lerwick! We booked privately with 'Kittywake Tours,' and were absolutely mind-blown by our experience. To provide context; Lerwick, was day 23 of a 24 day cruise. 11 months earlier, we had 26 days cruising and touring the Eastern Med (also with HAL). In the previous 12 months we had met many tour guides and visited many magnificent sites. Kitty Corbett, from 'Kittywake Tours,' left every other tour we had been on in her wake.. Kitty totally exceeded our expectations. Kitty was very responsive to our first-contact emails, providing suggestions based on our preferences. We disembarked our cruise ship an hour earlier than we intended, to have a little wander around the port and use the nearby cash machine. We got chatting to some of the locals on the dock whose faces actually lit up when we told them we were doing a Lerwick, tour with Kitty. Everyone knew Kitty and obviously loved her! Kitty greeted us like we were long lost family and immediately made us feel enthusiastic and excited about our day. Our tour of Lerwick and South Shetland with 'Kittywake Tours,' was the absolute highlight of our entire cruise. We shared our tour with another couple from the ship; but on reflection, next time, we would pay the small additional fee to have Kitty to ourselves. Kitty is enchanting, charming, very intelligent, thoughtful and kind! It is obvious that Kitty loves where she lives and loves sharing her insights and incredible local knowledge with awestruck visitors. Our tour was incredibly comprehensive - Kitty managed to fit in an amazing number of breathtaking stops.. we saw Puffins up close, fed Shetland ponies, sat by a smokey peat fire in a historic stone cottage and had a yarn with an elderly local, wandered through an abandoned croft, drove across an active runway, visited a specular lighthouse, toured the most amazing pre-historic to medieval site, visited craft wool shops, visited the 'Shetland,' television sites, visited the best 'Fish & Chippy,' on the Island, and sipped hot chocolate and ate biscuits [UK], cookies [USA], while gazing down on the most magnificent white sandy beaches. We highly recommend 'Kittywake Tours,' for anyone lucky enough to visit beautiful Lerwick. Read Less

I took a Holland America tour which went to see Shetland Ponies and Scalloway Castle. the lady who owns the ponies was very nice and friendly, very informative as well as being a nice photo shoot. Scalloway Castle was decent looking, but most interesting was the attached museum about the area- including the interesting Shetland Bus story- read the book first! And the museum has wifi! Read Less

What a lovely place. We booked a private tour and saw lots of the countryside dotted with sheep. We stopped at a couple of places to get up close to the Shetland ponies. It was a very good day.

We booked a private tour with Ruth Dale of Scenic Shetland. I left a full review on their Facebook page, but to summarize, this was an absolutely perfect day. Ruth was lovely, and planned an itinerary that showed us the most lovely parts of the island, got us into places most people don't get to see (including cruise ship excursion passengers), and was prepared with tea, cookies, extra hats for the wind, etc. I highly recommend booking with this company, although do it as far in advance as possible--she books up quickly! Excellent tour. Large range of sites and good guide. Please note however, do not use schools busses, adults need more legroom.

Enjoyable sightseeing tour by coach. Well-narrated, with an opportunity to see some authentic Shetland ponies, and their very passionate and informative breeder.

We were blessed with lovely weather. Wander round the town and then out of town. Checkout, before you go, where Tesco is on Google Maps, call in for some Scottish Strawberries ( if in summertime...otherwise a sandwich if you must) then wander across the road to Clickminin Broch an ancient site which is fascinating to wander around...for free...It is next to a small loch. Sit in the sunshine and eat the starawberries. Then retrace your steps and veer to the right. Walk round The Knab, and then after a pint in The Queens call for chips near the port. Good to walk off the calories before dinner! Read Less

Was great to get to see this island enjoyed walking around the town, plenty of little shops and cafes so we felt a tour was not needed. Others went to the other side of the island on a coach which we would probably try if we went again but sitting on a coach did not appeal at the time. There was a shuttle bus from the port if people were unable to walk the 10 mins into the town Read Less

We probably didn't see Lerwick at its best as it was a Sunday and very dull weather. Don't expect a lot of excitement from the town! An organised excursion is recommended (we did not take on ourselves).
