Ephesus is amazing. So extensive, even though the great majority remains under buried soil. Ekol Travel is a great agency based in Kusadasi.

KUSADASI -- Kusadasi is the HASSLE Capital of the world so do yourself a favour and avoid going into town and have a walk along the shore by turning left as you leave the port and keep going.

Kusadasi - This is just a myriad of Bazaars and shops albeit quite pleasant. The Turkish shop-owners try to get you in every shop but they are polite and often humorous.

By far our favorite port. We followed Rick Steve's instructions for getting to Ephesus on our own using the public bus system and found the Turks warm, friendly and easy to communicate with. On the way we discovered the most amazing open air market where we shopped for assorted olives, baklava, the best halva I've ever had, dried figs, and beautiful pears, all of which we brought aboard and set out on the dining room table to enjoy with our lunch. The Ephesus site was crowded with tour groups, and we were glad to be taking it at our own pace using an audio tour downloaded on our own devices rather than following an umbrella. I've read that the Terrace Houses (separate admission) were more impressive than Pompeii so we went in, but I don't recommend them. Read Less

Booked a privage tour through Ekol's. This was well worth it. In Turkey we had a driver and a guide. We took a walk through the ruins at Ephesus. This was better than Pompey or the Accropolis. We went to a rug factory and saw the whole process from silk worm to weaving. The leather factory had beautiful stuff but above my price comfort even with 50 % off. I suspect the jackets were a bargain but I don't know enough about leather. Visited Sirince village. This was a nice stop. Bought a bunch of jewerly from the man who designed the jewerly for the move Troy. Sample some local wines. Olive oil soap. I enjoyed the port of Kusadasi. While the shop owners were a little pushy (come visit my shop, good prices, hi pretty lady). There was plenty to see. Only port on this cruise that actually had something to see right off the ship. If you are not going to Ephesus, there is little to do other than shop but its a pretty place. Pigeon Island is worth a visit although more could be made of it.

If you want a carpet, this is the place to be. However, I really should have booked a tour and missed out on a lot of experiences. Be prepared to be hassled by shop owners

Private tour to Ephesus.Too hot and too many tourist for the site. Must see the Terrace, cost extra but shaded and less people. Went to the ancient village of Sirince for lunch, take a bit of hiking but well worth it. Still cooking the 'very old' way (coal and wood grill). Carpet again but this time comes with a demo how they harvest silk thread from the silk worm, plus hands on experiences to tie a double knot Turkish carpet, very interesting. Leather sales: good price (per wife) and quality. good a front row sit of a fashion shop cat-walk. Read Less

Turkey/Kusadasi/Ephesus- This was the one place I probably could have done with it. Turkey is dirty and sketchy. Although, I feel like they probably have improved a lot, the port is busy and pushy, people trying to get you to buy whatever crap they are trying to sell. It is what it is.... it's a tourist spot. Save the money of arranged trips! We hopped a local taxi (which is actually more like a mini van, it was kind of difficult to figure out at first. Ask the local tourist spot across the street from the port for a free map, and circle where the taxi stops. They all have signs in their windows, we were heading to Ephesus). The taxi to Ephesus was like 5 turkish dollars/pp, and entrance fee into Ephesus was not much more. We probably spent 40 turkish dollars on the whole thing. It was over 114 degrees that day, and you literally have to walk a mile from the taxi stop. Once again.. where good shoes and light clothes. Lots of water! We are not highly religious, so this trip we will not do again. Once you have seen it... you have seen it. The ruins are cool.. but, seriously. It was 114 degrees! Read Less

Have been to Ephesus and the Terrace Houses/Sirince beore, so we decided to just explore Kusadasi. Those shopkeepers try and grab hold of you and don't let go! "Where r u from" and u just keep walking away, they come after you! To get 1 jewelry store person off our backs, we saaid we'd be back later. Well, they kept a lookout for us, and nabbed us, as they were the 1st store in the Bazaar. So they ask what kind of jewellery I like, and I say, well, of course, DIAMONDS. So the lady takes out this ring from the window--a 3 carat round, I try it on (no, I am not buying) and now she sicks the big guns on me. Told her that I was looking to upgrade from my stone, etc., asked what the color, clarity, etc. of this stone was --I, VS, and they told me the ring was $18000 !!! Told them I wasn't going to spend that much, and then they said that I could upgrade my original stone and send them the GIA certificate later (yeah, right) Then they asked me how much I wanted to spend--$8000 ? $7000 ? Told them I wasn't really looking to spend anything...To this day, I have my doubts about that stone. Even one of the ship's Officers, whom I had started talking to at lunch one day, said that people got ripped off. Never would I ever buy a stone where I couldn't return it if there was some problem with it. Read Less

Unless you are going on a shore excursion and unless you don't mind being constantly hassled, I recommend staying put! I certainly will never go there again - the hassle was good natured but eventually became a real pain. I witnessed the most awful cruelty of a local beating his dog which left me in tears. So nope, this is one place I would recommend definitely giving a miss, unless you have nerves of steel! Read Less

Our private guide arrived about the same time we got off of the ship and walked out of the terminal (http://www.ephesustours.biz). She was a lovely lady... a former teacher and had a genuine love for people. By the way, the terminal area here is nice and fairly new... a very impressive entry to the country. Our Mercedes Benz van took us to the Virgin Mary's House. Again, we beat the tour buses. From there we spent about three hours in historic Ephesus. This IS IMPRESSIVE. Very quickly, the place became VERY crowded and hot. A delicious lunch was served to us at the nearby at the government sponsored carpet weaving school. After a carpet demonstration, with only slight pressure to buy, we went to see other ruins. It's obvious why everybody wants to visit Ephesus. Tip: Make sure your camera battery is charged... this is THE place to see and photograph ruins. Read Less

We got some really good bargains and met some really nice people. We had a drink in one of the cafes and were only charged 2 euros per glass of coke. Kusadasi is a very beautiful port in Turkey. We booked a tour with Ekol to visit Ephesus and Sirince Village. The tour and great and our guide Taylan was wonderful. Ephesus was pretty impressive and worth seeing even if you are not a huge history buff like me. It's also a must to visit the terrace houses! The ruins are really impressive but be prepared because it will be hot and there is a lot of walking with no real shade. We ate lunch at a family restaurant near Ephesus called Hanimaha. It was a fabulous experience and the whole family cooked for us. The food was really good and definitely get the meatballs. The entire family came out and waved us goodbye which was really sweet. We did stop at a carpet factory/shop and it was amazing to see the entire rug making process. We saw the silk worm cocoons to the ladies weaving at the loom to the gorgeous finished rugs. They do pull out all the stops to sell you a rug but it was a fun experience. Sirince village was our last stop and it was a cute small town to walk through but you don't need a lot of time there. Even though there was only 4 of us Ekol provided a big luxury van which was a nice treat! Overall great day in Turkey. Read Less

As my husband and I met in Turkey. It was very important to us that this stop was the highlight of our trip and it certainly was. We arranged an excursion through the Internet (Ephesus Shuttle) rather than utilizing the ship's tours and were not disappointed. We visited Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary, St. John's basilica, the Temple of Athena, had a real Turkish lunch and visited the rug factory. Our guide was knowledgeable and very considerate, keeping us away from the worst of the crowds and waiting for us slow walkers. The rug factory was a little more pushy that I had read in the reviews, but we got a nice rug from there. Read Less
