* Kusadasi - We had been in this port before, so we planned on going on shore just to walk around and revisit that known locale. Well, we docked, went ashore and were very surprised to see that everything had changed so much! Before it was more “Turkish”, a bit rugged but very exciting, while today's Kusadasi has lost all its enchantment and intrigue very orderly but tasteless. The change was akin to how Roatan lost its charm when new ‘big’ ship docks and shops were pushed on the small quaint port. So, please avoid walking that port and take any tour! After a very short abortive walk, we went right back to the ship and enjoyed its almost empty peacefulness! Read Less

Have been several times before and have visited Ephasus so just wondered around the town. Good for leather handbags and carpets but most of the people are very pushy. Not a favourite port

Only went to Kusadasi because we had already done a 14 day tour of Turkey and been to Ephesus previously. Kusadasi shop owners are very pushy but understandably they are not in a good economic situation. We were told it has been their worst year since the late 80's. I bought sandals in the first plaza and think I may have gotten a better deal had I looked as I found the exact same sandals in all the shops. We ate in a nice restaurant patio called 'Charlies'. We made sure we discussed exactly what we were ordering and the price first. We heard than someone else was presented with a bill a lot more than they were expecting. Could have missed this port but understand that a lot of others wanted to see Ephesus. Read Less

We used About Ephesus. $55 each. Same 6 people as in Messina. This tourguide was far less knowledgeable than Mario Astone family. She was young and simply recited facts from memory. She wasn't a local. We toured Ephesus and then she took us to a ceramic factory, Virgin Mary house, a rug factory and then dropped us in Kusadasi. Ephesus is phony. People don't realize it, but the entire place was rebuilt in the style of what was there. Even the columns are simply recreated replicas. Everyone makes a big deal of the terrace houses. They are ok, but again nothing special. The ceramic factory was actually interesting. The stuff is high quality. Bargain like crazy and the price comes down. They discount for cash and do ship it. They are honest. The stuff arrived today in excellent condition. The rug factory is a joke. Nice exhibit and then they keep telling you no obligation but hound you like crazy. The first one they showed my wife that she expressed any interest in was quoted at 4,100 Euro. That was ultimately reduced to 2,900 Euro. They claim they are rare and handmade, but they have thousands of them. Not too rare. The price then dropped to 2,000 Euro. If I really wanted it, I would have gotten it for about 800 Euro. They are crooks. We stopped at the Virgin Mary house, but I refused to go in. This is totally phony. The Turkish government concedes the chances Mary was ever here is less than 2%. But they charge about 8 Euro each for people to stand inside a chapel constructed in the early 1900's. AVOID this. It is an affront to Christianity and insulting to anyone else. There is a shop inside the port for jewelry run by Haim Paco. If you want jewelry, find his shop and tell him I sent you. He is a master craftsman and the price was good. He is honorable. Do not buy jewelry in Kusadasi. They were trying to charge 850 Euro for a pair of earrings which at most were worth 125 Euros. (9 grams of 14k gold). Also, do NOT buy 925 silver. That is the lowest class of sterling and you are being ripped off. They probably get it from Mexico. It will turn your skin black. Read Less

We were a little disappointed in this port. Obviously the weather was nice but we found the local salesmen in the bazaar overstepped the mark with their ploys to get you into their shops. We would have been far more likely to look in their shops if they'd said nothing. One even resorted to speaking Welsh to me when I replied "no" to "English, Sir?"!!!! The Turkish Delight we bought from a little stall on the way back to the ship was great though! Read Less

We took the excursion to Ephesus and the House of Virgin Mary. Ephesus was just another set of ruins, but the librairy is quite a see. The House of Virgin Mary was a complete rip off and a disapointement. For very religious people and believers ONLY. Others: AVOID. In the afternoon, we walked around Kusadasi and we disliked it. It was not really pretty nor exceptional and all the stores sold nothing else but junk, except for the carpet stores. We found annoying that we couldn't just look and the things without having a vendor jump on us and trying to sell us something. We hated it. This port has very little interest but for those willing to spend thousands on a Turkish carpet. Our least enjoyable day. Read Less

Our second day was in Kusadasi where we explored downtown for a few hours then met our private guide for an afternoon at Ephesus (ABSOLUTE MUST SEE TERRACE HOUSES -WORTH THE FEE), the Temple of Artemis (a single standing pillar in a field - don't bother) and a nice tour and high-pressure rug factory tour. They really were lovely rugs. My friends bought one. It's been a month and theirs still hasn't arrived. After seeing Ephesus, i have no reason to go back there. Nuf said. Read Less
