We had pouring rain but still enjoyed the port stop. We arrived 12 hours early so got to enjoy an evening in Krikwall including a concert at St. Magnus Cathedral. The Cathedral is well worth the time you spend there. We went back during the next day to look at the modern artwork (decorated viking sails) and the building itself. There is also a visitor's center close by. For me a Kirkwall highlight was the Orkney Wireless Museum, which for an old radio head like me was like being in a toy store. World War 1 and II buffs will also be interested in the military exhibits and the use of radio by the ships in the Scappa Flow. We enjoyed some Orkney Ice cream and scones and tea. A lot of fun. We did a HAL excursion to the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae & Skaill House. The Ring of Brodgar & Skara Brae were interesting, Skaill House ordinary. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated into rain and wind and it was very unpleasant. The local council ran a free shuttle from the port into the town of Kirkwall. At the end of our tour we caught it into the town which was quite interesting. A pity about the weather, otherwise we would have spent more time wandering. Read Less

Tour to Skara Brae was in afternoon, so a chance to walk around the town, free shuttle, lovely English town with castle ruins and lovely cathederal. Visit to Skara Brae was informative and historical, enjoyed it very much.

There are only three sites in the town, and all of them are one nera the other one... It is recommended to make a tour to the Ring of Brodgar. But there are only two tours a day: at 10:00 and at 14:00. The ship embarked at 11:00, so there was only one chance... Now, pay attention: they begin to sell tickets after 13:00. We arrived to the teller at 12:30, and found a long line... After standing all the line for about an hour we found out that all the tickets have been sold! So if you are eager to make this tour, come not later than 12:00. Finally we were happy, that we have not reached the tickets: it began raining, like a storm, and I just thought about going aroubd outside for the next three hours....Eeeee. We returned on board, drank some tasty beverages in our warm and quiet restaurant and looked outside with a feeiling of satisfaction.)) Read Less

We visited The Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brogher, Skara Brea, Skaill House, the Scapa Flow and Maeshowe. We had a wonderful high tea at the Birsay Tea Room. Our tour ended at St. Magnus Cathedral before we were dropped back to the ship. I'd highly recommend this company and Orkney! Read Less

We went into town early to see the town & the Cathedral. Late we took a Princess shore excursion to see the Viking homes. It was beautiful scenery & completely different form the rest of Scotland.

Took the local bus to stone age village and ancient Stonehenge like ruins. Make sure you get to the local bus station by 9 to secure a seat on the 10:00 tours (only run once in the morning and once in the afternoon...too late for cruise).

This is a really windy Island. We could not get the tour we wanted so we went on our own to town. They have a great medival church and castle like buildings to explore and then we went shopping in the really cute town. Upstairs in one building they had a whole craft show of handmade items for sale. They did have a hop on and off bus but you have to get tickets for that in advance. That was the only port that you couldn't get tickets for the hop on and off bus when you get there. So if you want to see more sites get those tickets before you go to Kirkwall. I think this little town had the best shopping. Read Less

This was a waste of time. There was little to see or do in this small port. The excursion went to this small village, but didn't stop at several neolithic sights.
