Went on the excursion of the Ancient Treasures of Orkney. These stones are older than Stonehenge from the neolithic era. You can actually go and touch some of the stones. Not all are roped off. A cross on one of the stones is believed to be from the 12th century. Saw lots of single stones in people's yards. Also visited the Skaiel House of Orkney built in the 1600s and the Skara Brae, also from the neolithic era. . . Read Less

As our visit to Kirkwall was quite short we opted to do our "own thing" once we got to town on the shuttle. We visited the cathedral, where a children's orchestra were playing, and walk out to the Highland Park Distillery where we made some purchases! We've visited other distilleries so didn't opt for a tour on this occasion. I walked further up the road to enjoy the views of Scapa Beach and back over Kirkwall. Purchases in Jollys' wonderful shop and some coffee and cake rounded off our brief visit. Some fellow travellers had got together and hired a taxi to take them to some of the island's landmarks e.g. the Italian Chapel - a cheaper option than availing of the cruise company's tours. We shared the taxi with another couple and the driver took us to see standing stones and Skara Brae. My husband enjoyed the tour while I stayed in the Visitor's Center. Price for couple 40 euros.

Did I like the accent of our guide (a nice Orkney lady)! As a history fan I loved to see Scapa Flow.

Took the ship's tour to Stones of Stennis, Ring of Brodgar and Broch of Gurness. Good tour. In Kirkwall visited the main church and stopped in a liquor shop and bought a 50 ml bottle of Scotch and a local beer.

I had book a rather expensive walking tour but because of the uncertain weather and because I can walk in the very small town I cancelled the ship's tour and spent a few hours seeing the town and the very nice Church.

I recommend that you don't bother with the official excursions and buy a Maxi Tour ticket from the Tourist Information Centre. Much cheaper and just as good in fact we came across 'official' excursion busses at various points and wegot back in time to have a walk around Kirkwall before getting onto the shuttle bus - a very windy place - driver told us that all of the chickens blew away in the storm of '53 !! Not nearly enough time at Italian Chapel on'Leisurely Orkney' tour...just 20 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. Yet stopped off for almost an hour for a cup of tea and a scone.
