There's really only a day and a half in Kauai (the second day isn't a full day). We did a helicopter the first morning and it was wonderful. We booked on our own, though the company we picked was the same one that the cruise used. They provided a shuttle and we boarded with the same people that booked with the cruise (we just didn't pay as much). We also got a rental car (shuttle from the pier) and drove around to various sights and then did Smith's Luau at night (the cruise sponsored luau is pushed pretty strongly, but they say they send about 800 people--sounded too chaotic for me). We had hoped to keep the rental car over night and had scouted out a parking location earlier in the day. The employee we talked to said they were open 24 hrs a day and we could park any time for $20--not true. We returned at 10 to park the car and they were closed, so we just ended up returning it to the rental agency. The second day you have to be back on board at 1:30, but there's a beach maybe a 5 minute walk from the ship (and a shuttle for those that need it) we walked there and spent a few hours playing in the waves. After the buffet breakfast, we headed out for our Kauai excursion to the Waimea Canyon, on an air conditioned bus. Our driver was very knowledgeable, and gave us a good description of the scenery along the way, stopping for us to buy souvenirs, use restrooms, and get refreshments. We even saw a small blowhole, and a lot of wild roosters along the road. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” was amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed the view. The restrooms were not the best, so I advise using one on the last stop before the Canyon. Read Less

KAUAI –gets 5.5 stars from me because I think the most beautiful of the Islands. We used a private tour guide for this Island also. Tread Lightly Kauai is operated by Jay Dorrance and he is a private 1 man show. He also meets right outside the security gates of the pier – short walking distance. We expressed interest in seeing movie locales, beaches, waterfalls and other photo ops and BOY did he ever deliver! We saw so much in that day.. the Wailua River, Opaeka’a Falls, the Hindu Monastery, Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (where I got some of my greatest photos). We were even taken to Gilligan’s Island beach. Our day with Jay, left us knowing we’d made a new lifelong friend! His knowledge and passion for the island of Kauai was evident. I stayed on the ship for the 2nd day in Kauai – but the others in my part left for shore and said there were free shuttles “to all over”, there as well. There has to be a lot to see on this island and I look forward to going back one day. Read Less

I had booked the “Heaven and Earth Quest” through NCL and this was one of my favorite excursions. This was another small-group tour that combined a tour of the Coconut Coast and a helicopter ride. Wow! From a picnic next to gorgeous Hanalei bay to soaring over “Jurassic Falls,” Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast, this was just spectacular. We were blessed with good weather, which was important because things took a turn for worse on the following day. The helicopter company was Blue Hawaiian. The ride was smooth and the pilot was great and very informative. There was even a musical soundtrack! We had an opportunity to purchase a video of our flight - be aware that if you want to take it with you, they will give you an .avi file on an SD card. If you want a DVD, they will have to ship it to you. Read Less

We organised this private tour with Jay Dorrance of Tread LIghtly and we could not have been happier. Travelling with Jay was like travelling with an old friend, he was so accommodating and went out of his way to ensure we had a special day. He took us to some of his favourite places, including a Hindu Monastery, Opaeka'a Falls, north to the lookout over Hanalei Bay, out to Lumahai beach, then back to swim and relax at his secret little beach at Anini. Afterwards we stopped to view the lighthouse at Kilauea, before stopping at a favourite eatery for a grass fed Kauai beef burger. Finally, we stopped at Gilligans Island for a photo shoot before heading back to the ship. It was an 8 hour day, so worth every cent. I highly recommend it. Read Less

We had a great time on this island. We were docked here for two days, but unfortunately the second day was a short day and we had to be back on ship by 1:30 pm. (We took a rest day the day before which was the long day should have reversed it.) There is free transport from the port to the little town of Lihue. The trolley lets you off at a small mall which has some nice little shops and places to eat including a Mexican Food restaurant which supposedly has great Margaritas - didn't get to try it. Facing the main street, there is a guy at a table selling tours at very reasonable prices. This is the place to do zip lines, snorkeling, helicopter tours and kayaking. NCLs excursions are very expensive so you should to find local companies who will give you a good tour for less.We took a two hour tour that cost $140 for up to 6 people!! Had a really nice tour of Lihue and the area surrounding area. We saw, Wailua Falls and the Muanakapu mountains and river - beautiful!! Opaekaa Falls and the Alekoko Menehune fishpond were also lovely. Definitely go ashore on the first day and not the second day. Read Less

Kauai was, in my opinion, the most beautiful island. We took a 55 minute helicopter ride where. We got to see Waimea Canyon up close with tons of waterfalls & a spectacular view of the Napali Coastline. There was a nice beach with plenty of shops within walking distance to the ship and the children enjoyed spending time there. We were there over the 4th of July & were able to see the fireworks from the ship. Read Less

Rented a car once again, the island is BEAUTIFUL. Easy to get around and a relaxed atmosphere. Be sure to stop at some of the local shops as they are very friendly and have great merchandise cheap for friends and family.

Beautiful island with a great beach close to the cruise port. It would have been a great port to sit in the sun if we had had better weather.
