This is the post for Olympia. Katakolon itself is very small and very quaint, if you want to have a wander here you can get from the ship to the center on foot within five minutes. We booked a tour to go with MSC to Olympia, the transfer etc was good and all well arranged. The site itself was however a little bit of a let down for us, especially after visiting the Acropolis in Athens. Its not very 'together' so to speak. A lot of the site is now just stones on the ground which in comparison to the Acropolis is a shame as this site has been worked on and slightly restored. Worth a visit if anything to hear the history of the site. Read Less

Unfortunately our captain had warned us the previous evening that strong winds were forecast for the day we were in Katakolon and we may not be able to dock. As it happened we were able to dock but the winds were too high to get the gangplank down! This meant we were unable to disembark. We were also unable to then sail away so we spent the day in the port but on the ship! This was a shame as we had booked transport to see the ancient site of Olympia. But we still had a fun day as we did some of the quizzes in the schooner bar and actually won one of them! Read Less

Took a trip to Olympia as we knew through our research that there was not much in the port and just as well, nice to see but wouldn't rush back.

In Olympia, we organized a private taxi ahead of time, and they were waiting with a sign right at the port. Katakolon looked boring (and is barely populated, pure tourist area), so I'm glad we did this. We arrived to Olympia before the hoards of buses from ships did, which was nice. We spent about 2 hours there exploring and in the museum. Then, we went to Olympia Land winery which was excellent and one of the best wine tours/tasting I've had. We bought lots of wine and olive oil there to bring home. Then we went back to Olympia town for shopping, and finally stopped at a restaurant and later a beach bar for drinks and ice cream. It was nice to a have a personal tour guide and not be stuck in Katakolon. Read Less

Here we wandered into the small village and took a ride over the hill to the beach. Lovely beach, warm water and restaurant up on the hill. Had a nice day, people watching, swimming, reading relaxing.

We took an organised tour to Olympia and really enjoyed it, again despite the crowds of August. The port itself is just a road long with shops and bars on both sides of the road. We had a nice wander about, although prices reflect the fact that it mainly caters to cruise ships. For example I wanted a cotton Caftan, I saw them for 45 euros, in Katakolon, which I knew was way to high, I eventually bought one in Corfu town for 23 euros', and then spotted one for 15 euros, in Corfu, so I had to buy that as well, it would have been rude not to. We did not tour the town ot Katakolon. Rather, the little town of Olympia was quite charming! The shopkeepers were very friendly, and the stores were beautifully merchandised with olives, ceramics, jewelry, and other souvenirs. We really enjoyed our short time shopping here and purchased many of the gifts we gave family and friends in Olympia. The site of Olympia was a disappointment. The overall emotion I had was one of sadness that especially in this year of the Olympics in London that Greece was unable to attract enough benefactors to invest in excavations and reconstructions at the original Olympic site. We did not spend much time here, as there are few extant buildings... more rubble and pieces of things that tourists are expected to "visualize." So sad. Read Less

Nice little Port with the ship docking about three hundred yards from the little centre. A very small waterfront lined with cafes/restaurants and the main shopping road running parallel to it.

We opted out of going to Olympia and went to the beach. The cab driver was really driving too fast through town and made is very nervous. We went to the beach of Agios Andreas. It was a bit rocky and you had to really pay attention to how the "local" folks got out to the water because of the rocks. Once out - it was very nice to float in the water. Because it was a Sunday - the beach restaurant was closed so there weren't any ammedities. We went back to the town - and had a nice quick bite and headed back to the boat. Friends raved about Olympia - and if we came back - we would probably take that in. Read Less
