Only did the included freebee, which took us to a cultural museum which was interesting. Customs procedure was long and ate into the time there. Not something Viking had any control over though.

Took excursion to Sakurajima Island. Heavy fog again. Walked up path to view volcano but couldn't see it. :"Shopping stop" was in a dingy area where there was nothing a tourist would care to purchase.

I enjoyed the visit to Arimura Lava Observatory. The weather was beautiful and had a clear view of the volcano. Sengan en gardens were beautiful, the luncheon was great. Enjoyed seeing the Shochu distillery and tasting room

We did a 5 Hour tour of the Kagoshima area with an onboard English speaking guide. The tour was arranged through Princess and was worth the money. We normally don’t do organise tours but due to the location we thought this was the better option and I’m glad we did it this way. To do similar on your own would be more than difficult and certainly not as safe. Read Less

Kagoshma is a small port so easy to visit on your own. I took the shuttle into town then took the City view bus where you can buy a ticket on the bus and it visits a number of scenic sights around the city. Especially enjoyed the view from the hilltop but in retrospect should have perhaps caught the ferry across to the volcanic island but time in port was short and was worried about geting back. First time to Kagoshima. Took the extra bus (€15) into town rather than the taxi and this was better value. Nice place to visit.

I went on the shore excursion that visited the samurai gardens in Chiran and the Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots. Although many exhibits were in Japanese, they had translated some of the letters, poems etc, that the pilots wrote before they flew off to their death and there was a short film in English. Kagoshima looked a very scenic port and I would have liked to have spent more time there. Cruise terminal has free wifi. The shuttle bus (US$10) dropped people off at the Dolphin Port where quite a few took the ferry across to Sakurajima, the active volcano. This is much cheaper than doing the shore excursion. You can see it puffing out ash from the ship if its clear. Read Less

We did the ferry ride to Mt. Sakurajima. It was very exciting to see an active volcano and the views were spectacular. Kagoshima is a beautiful, interesting clean port. Right next to the cruise terminal was a large clean park filled with locals picnicking, playing sports, running. It was nice just spending an hour walking around the large track there. We would have loved to spend time in downtown Kagoshima..it looked very interesting, clean and safe but we ran out of time. Read Less
